About Canon EOS R5 C
Canon’s EOS R5 C bridges the gap between cinema cameras and “hybrid” photography cameras. Most notably, the EOS R5 C offers separate interfaces and operating systems for users as they switch between photo and video modes. Powered by the same 45 megapixel sensor and DIGIC X image processor seen in the original EOS R5, this camera is incredibly versatile for high-end photography and cinematography applications. Capable of shooting 8K/60p, or 4K120p that is downsampled from 8K, the EOS R5 C is loaded with powerful cinema features like waveform monitors and video codec options. If you’re looking for a hybrid camera that is cinema-capable, the EOS R5 C is a camera you shouldn’t overlook.
A True Hybrid System
The EOS R5 C brings the term “hybrid” to a whole new level. This camera is truly meant for the creator who needs to do both. A switch allows users to seamlessly switch between photo and video, and the menu system and interface change to suit your needs. In video mode, pro-level features like waveform monitors, video codec options, and numerous advanced audio controls become available. When switched back into photo mode, the menu operates nearly identically to the menu in the EOS R5.
High Resolution Sensor & DIGIC X
At the heart of the EOS R5 C is a 45 megapixel full-frame CMOS Sensor with an ISO range of 100-51200, which is expandable to 50-102400. A DIGIC X Processor paves the way for enhanced speeds and excellent image quality. In burst mode, the EOS R5 C is capable of capturing up to 20fps in electronic shutter and 12fps in mechanical shutter with full autofocus subject detection and tracking at all speeds.
Pro-Level Recording Specs
Capable of recording up to 8K60p with external power, or 8K30p with the internal battery, this camera is excellent for users who want to maintain the highest resolution to future-proof their footage or crop down in post. Lower resolution footage, like 4K120p, is available without crop and is downsampled from 8K, which enables better image quality with less moiré, false colors, and noise. Canon’s Cinema RAW Light format is available, which can retain extensive color grading flexibility and dynamic range but compresses file sizes to allow for longer shooting times and less required storage space on memory cards. Simultaneous dual-format recording and 8K HDR (HLG/PQ) are available when multiple formats may be desired. The EOS R5C is also approved for Netflix productions, though this is only for 4K shooting in XF-AVC format, not the full 8K RAW capability. Finally, for those on multi-camera productions, a timecode input/output terminal is available to ensure perfect synchronization between footage.
Electronic Image Stabilization
Canon opted to forgo In-Body Image Stabilization to rely solely on electronic stabilization and optical stabilization from your lenses. This is the preferred method of many pro cinema workflows that rely on external stabilization, and it helps to make room for the camera’s internal cooling fan.
Audio Recording
Canon’s Multifunction Shoe features a built-in digital audio interface and supports the optional TASCAM CA-XLR2d-C XLR Microphone Adapter. When in use, this accessory adds two full-size XLR inputs with phantom power and an integrated shotgun microphone mount that allows the EOS R5 C to record up to four channels of 24-bit digital audio. And unlike many other cameras that don’t record audio during high-framerate shooting, the EOS R5 C can record .WAV audio separately from video, which allows for easy delivery of video and audio files.
Canon Log 3
The EOS R5 C offers Canon Log 3, one of Canon’s profiles with the widest dynamic range, offering the most post-processing capabilities and available on many Canon EOS and Cinema EOS cameras. This profile is designed to be easy to grade and expands on Canon Log’s ease of use with less noise.
Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus
The same Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology seen in the EOS R5 is used in the EOS R5 C, and when shooting photos, it can use every pixel on the imaging sensor to determine focus. In video mode, over 80% of the screen is used for autofocus. This accounts for 1,053 autofocus zones when shooting stills and 819 autofocus zones when recording video. Touch AF allows for quick positioning of the autofocus point by touching the vari-angle LCD screen. The camera can detect animals, people, and vehicles, and can even detect facial features to precisely determine focus in every frame. Additionally, the EOS R5 C is excellent in low light, allowing for autofocus in conditions as dark as EV -6, ensuring your photos and videos maintain sharpness even in nighttime conditions.
Unlimited Recording
The use of an internal cooling fan helps to dissipate heat from the EOS R5 C’s body, allowing for unlimited recording time. This is perfect for creators who need to record long events, meetings, weddings, and more.
HDMI & Wireless Connectivity
RAW output via HDMI and ProRes RAW recording are available with compatible external recorders. A USB-C port is available for charging and can power the camera from a compatible USB PD source; AC power is supplied through the optional DC Coupler and AC Adapter. The camera can also be used as a USB-C UVC webcam or connected via HDMI to an external capture card or switcher for streaming setups. For direct Wi-Fi connectivity, IP streaming, Bluetooth remote control, file transfer, and firmware updates, the optional WFT-R10 Wireless File Transmitter is required.
Thoughtful Ergonomics
13 fully customizable buttons are available to perfectly suit any user and their workflows. The body itself is compact and lightweight, and is just slightly bigger and heavier than the EOS R5. It’s compatible with RF lenses or EF lenses when using the EF-EOS R adapter. The body is also dust- and moisture-resistant to prevent sand, dust, dirt, or water from getting inside.
VR Support with RF5.2mm f/2.8 L Dual Fisheye
The EOS R5 C is compatible with VR creators with the RF5.2mm f2.8 L Dual Fisheye lens to shoot stereoscopic 3D VR video. To edit this footage, users will need to download a plug-in for Premiere Pro or use Canon’s EOS VR Utility.
Canon EOS R5 vs EOS R5 C
While both cameras utilize the same sensor and many of the same features, they are meant for vastly different types of creators. The EOS R5 is primarily meant for hybrid creators who need the top-line photography specs with excellent video qualities as well. The EOS R5 C goes over the top with video specs, making it a well-suited cinema camera for professional productions, and it can do nearly anything the EOS R5 can do, aside from having in-body image stabilization. If you’re a pro-level creator who needs cinema features in a camera that can capture outstanding stills, the EOS R5 C is the camera for you. If you are a creator who wants impressive video specs but doesn’t need many of the highest-end cinematography features, the EOS R5 is a better choice.
