The Canon RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM has quickly become one of my favorite lenses in the RF lineup. The image quality is outstanding - incredibly sharp wide open with beautiful contrast and rich colors that give photos a premium, cinematic feel. The f/1.4 aperture creates gorgeous background separation and smooth bokeh, making it perfect for portraits, weddings, events, and even low-light work. Autofocus performance is fast, silent, and extremely reliable, especially for both photo and video. The VCM focusing system feels modern and refined, with excellent subject tracking and smooth focus transitions for video shooters. Build quality is exactly what you would expect from Canon's L-series glass - solid, weather-sealed, and confidence inspiring without feeling overly heavy. What really stands out is how versatile this lens is. The 50mm focal length works for almost everything: portraits, storytelling, street photography, lifestyle work, and professional event coverage.

I'm always nervous with new glass so I tested this a bit before I took it on an assignment but the results from an assignment under the conditions that day and constraints of shooting locations is always the test. The countless YouTube reviews already tell the story. It's light enough to barely notice but razor sharp at f2 and slower. I like it. I enclosed one close up portrait to show the sharpness.

The 50mm f/1.4 VCM is a great lens for a broad range of shooting. This lens provides incredible images through the f/1.4 through f/8.0 and beyond. Attached are three test images showing f/1.4, f/4.0, and f/8.0 at close range for reference.

I bought this lens as my first lens after moving to mirrorless from the NIKON D850. I paired it with the R5 MKII and couldn't be happier.

I purchased the Rf50 in January of 2026 and it's a great lens. Fast, Sharp, Accurate, and a joy to use. I will keep this simple and just show you some basic photos that were shot with the Canon L series lens. NO filters & NO Editing were used on the following photos. Photos provided were shot in the lowest .jpeg format for R5 MK II camera.

Excellent lens for night photography / Astrophotography. My first lens of this type and the online manual was very helpful.

Lens hasn't been used yet, but my daughter has rented it before and loved it and why I bought it for her.

The RF50mm F1.4 L VCM is by far my most Favorite RF lens. The sizing and weight is ideal for most all shooting environments and the clarity of images is just outstanding! The new streamlined design, layout of focus and control rings make for it a real pleasure to use. I have had several other Canon RF lenses and I keep finding myself wanting to use this one almost every time. I would highly recommend the RF50mm F1.4 L VCM unless you are looking for super wide angle shots or shooting closeups and longer distances.

This lens is a good addition to Canon's VCM line of hybrid lenses. It is good for portrait and tighter, more discrete street photography. The f1.4 aperture gives good subject separation without the size and weight of the more expensive RF 85mm f1.2 lens.

I bought this lens for landscape and Milky Way photos. Sharp and fast from corner to corner. I wish that canon would make a <16mm f2 lens.

I'm very pleased with this lens. I've been wanting a fast wide prime for astrophotography for a long time. It would be awesome to have a wider lens at f/1.4 or f/1.8 but it would probably be huge! This VCM lens is such a perfect weight and size compared to the other RF L series primes that I would consider getting the 35mm and 50mm f/1.4 versions on size alone. I haven't used it extensively yet, but I did take it out for some astrophotography and the results were fantastic. I could limit the exposure time to 10 seconds to get pin point stars, while at f/1.4 and ISO 6400 I could still get brilliant colors out of the Milky Way. For astrophotography I don't think this lens has any competition. For all other purposes, the competition is steep. But given the video friendly features of this wide angle prime, I imagine it could fill an important niche. I only dabble in video so I can't insist upon it, but there's a lot to love about this lens. It should be no surprise by now that it does lean on digital lens corrections, as almost all RF lenses do, but not so heavily as to feel like you're being cheated. I think it's a great balance of high optical performance, digital correction, and perfect form factor. No color fringing. No coma aberrations on point source lights even in the extreme corners, uncorrected, wide open. Excellent sharpness! As a bonus, try Canon's neural network lens correction and noise reduction software! It's awesome!

I recently purchased this lens as an addition to my current lineup. I haven't been in photography industry for a long time, I am still a beginner hobbyist, but this would be my second L lens from Canon. My fifth lens in total. Although my previous were less expensive and not on the more expensive glass side, they still provided great images when shot correctly through my camera. With the addition of my RF 24mm I was able to see a noticeable change in my picture quality. I'm still getting used to all my available features, but I can definitely tell you that the RF 24mm was worth the purchase. I figure if I can already see a difference image the possibilities after some real practice. Great purchase.

Purchased lens about a month ago and have taken landscape and city pictures and really enjoy the lens. Optically very good corner to corner (using automatic corrections) and from wide open at f1.4, focuses quickly, light weight on camera (well balanced). All around excellent.

Impressed with the size weight and aperture of this lens as well as the sharpness of the images even at f1.4. It's use for both video and photo is what drew me to this lens and so far it has delivered in both aspects.

Low abberation, low coma, although some color fringing is noticeable in some situations, but is easily corrected in post. Very sharp, very lightweight. No depth of field aperture marks but ability to use DOF apps and manually focus with distance data on the screen overcomes this limitation. This lens is designed for the images to ONLY be used when lens corrections are enabled. If you disable them during post, you will see a severe amount of peripheral shading, and the barrel of the lens will clip the corners. Generally this isn't a major issue, but for some specialty work such as nightscapes this can cause some post processing shortcomings. However, for this same type of work, the comatic aberation and astigmatism is about the lowest I've ever seen in a wide-angle lens with stars on the edges and corners depicted as round points of light, even when shooting wide-open. I agree with other online reviews that this is probably Canon's best performing wide angle lens they've ever produced when shooting nightscapes of the Milky Way, and the performance wide open will improve nightscape exposures by at least 1 EV since you don't have to stop it down to reduce astigmatism and coma. The AF capability wide open when shooting starry landscapes is also superb, eliminating the need to use focusing aids to achieve sharp stars. If you can achieve sufficient exposure, or don't overly process nightscape imagery, then the lens corrections won't be a problem. Given it's tremendous performance on rending stars wide open, ease of focus, and light weight, this will likely be my new go to lens for Milky Way photoshoots over my very heavy, manual focus, expensive german made lenses I've been using for that work up to this point.

Extremely lightweight with fantastic image quality. If you shoot c-raw, all the distortion is corrected. Don't listen to everyone complaining and moaning. It's not quite on par with the EF 35 ii optically, but it comes with a MASSIVE weight and cost savings, especially once you factor in the adapter for the EF version.

Its about time Canon releases new L prime lenses like this one. But it was worth it: It has a very beautiful character and bokeh, and it is very sharp. AF super fast, accurate and silent. It comes with few cons: some aberration and distortion, which can be both corrected easily.

The speed of the autofocus on this new lens is simply cheetah-like in comparison to the EF 35mm f/1.4 L II version, which until now was one of my favorite and most frequently used lenses. That lens now seems like the inevitable victim of prey which is about to meet its demise because of its sluggishness upon comparison. It's also slightly sharper than the EF 35mm f/1.4 L II, significantly lighter in weight, and of course much more convenient as there is no longer a need for an adapter. To my pleasant surprise, the design and material texture of this new lens is also more striking than I expected. Overall, it gives the tangible feel of a significant upgrade that justifies the cost.

This was an incredible letdown. I had been waiting for just this exact lens for so long. I received it and loved the size and weight. The loose, clunking elements annoyed me some, but when poor quality of the standalone, uncorrected photos, I heart sank. I returned it the very next day. This is the worst L glass on the RF mount by far. Sad day. Shame on canon.

Absolutely remarkable lens from Canon. As a full-time wedding photographer who primarily shoots with primes (35mm, 50mm, 85mm), I have eagerly awaited this lens since Canon introduced their Mirrorless body offerings. I absolutely adore the RF 50mm 1.2 and the 85mm 1.2. They are truly amazing lenses, and the RF 35mm 1.4 is an exceptional addition to the trio. The image quality of the new 35mm is outstanding in every way, from the sharpness at both the center and edges to the natural color rendition. However, what I appreciate most is the weight reduction of this lens. As I approach 40, carrying heavy lenses for a 10-hour wedding day has become quite a chore. While 2 pounds for a lens might not seem significant, it really is when you're holding that, along with an R3 and a speedlite, to your face for 10 hours. I have always envied my friends with Sony lenses because they are lighter, but now with Canon's lighter offerings, I am thrilled. The iconic Canon colors and glass, is something I and many others have loved for years, but now with the additional weight savings that love grows stronger. These lighter lenses not only reduce fatigue throughout the day but also allow me to position my camera in ways that were previously impossible due to ligament and joint strain. And Canon, if you happen to read this, please, please, please release lighter L lenses in 50mm and 85mm. As a wedding professional, I would much rather take a light 1.4 over a heavy 1.2 any day. Keep up the great work! JT
