All worth it

It works perfectly with our R8 and, as expected, is much better than the EF-S 55 - 250mm on our EF cameras. We may want to try the RF 800mm later.

This is a Great Lens

I am getting great results with and without the 2x extender. The lens is light enough for off-hand shooting, but go with support for that big reach. I like that I can get full throw from 100 to 400 with just a quarter turn of the barrel to get that perfect frame without mucking my focus or aim.

Lightweight, Inexpensive, but VERY SLOW!

A very good lens, especially for its pretty inexpensive, light weight, focus is fast. But oh that f/11 @400mm is so slow! I don't know if I can get 'use' to having to really turn up the ISO to get fast enough shutter to freeze motion of animals and birds. I almost gave it 3 stars.

Affordable travel lens

Lightweight with a nice range for wildlife photography -- and it won't break the bank. I paired this with my Canon R8 and traveled to the Galapagos. The combo was easy to handle and produced some excellent images!

Good lens for the price but quality suffers

This is a great lens for the price. Light weight, compact, great for walking around. I used it with my Canon RP body, which was a nice all around set up. The quality of images, however, is not as good as my L series lenses, especially at the 400mm range. I returned the lens and opted for the 100-500mm.

RF100-400 + 2x extender wins vs. RF200-800

I am writing this review as a previous owner of this lens because for whatever reason, it won't let me write a review for the RF200-800 lens, which I purchased to replace my RF100-400. That being said, I wish I still had this lens, for 3 main reasons: 1. This lens @ $649 + $450 2x extender (refurbished) is effectively the same focal length and aperture as the RF200-800 for ~$600 less. 2. The RF100-400 + 2x extender is VERY portable in comparison to the much larger RF200-800. 3. The RF200-800 has a much larger front lens and picks up a lot more dust than the RF100-400, so you will spend a lot more time trying to keep the RF200-800 clean. As far as image quality is concerned, I can't say the RF200-800 is noticeably better. This red tail hawk photo was taken with RF100-400 + 2x extender and is one of my favorites.

The best lens you can have is the one that is with you

The best lens you can have is the one you have with you when you want to take a picture! Because of the compact size and low weight of this lens, you are likely to have it along on your nature hikes and adventures. Of course it would be worthless if it did not perform optically/photographically - have no fear, it performs very well! Very quick and silent auto focus, smooth zoom, and efficient vibration reduction. It has become my got to lens, or better said, my "take with" lens!

Great lens for the price!

This is a very flexible lens, with a decent focus speed and reasonably quiet. It's a touch on the slow side, but for the cost involved that's to be expected. Image quality is very good, takes full advantage of the R5 45MP sensor. It's nice to have the control ring on these new RF lenses!

Don't let the price fool you

I purchased an R6 Mark ii in November and only had the 24-105 mm lens. Which is fine but I needed a zoom lens. The other 100-400 mm white lenses were outside my budget. I was reluctant to buy this lens because, come on...it's $650. How good can that be? I've been pleasantly surprised with this lens as I'm learning to take bird photos. I think I want the 200-800 mm that is back-ordered/new next. I'm giving it 4.5 stars.

Fantastic Value

This is my favorite telephoto lens hands down. It represents fantastic value for camera lenses. I use this lens most often during the early evening or during the day. At periods around sunset you'll find that ISO needs to be increased. The 'slow' F-stop is usually a non-issue. Given the light weight of the lens and long zoom, it has become one of my favorites.

Good quality lens

I've had the RF 100-400 for 3 months now. It's one of my favorite lenses. I use it on my Canon RP during daytime walks. This is a hobby of mine. I like capturing images of birds, butterflies, flowers, and landscapes. The autofocus is solid. I don't have a lens hood or an nd filter yet I just shoot the lens s is. It feels nice and solid. I like the control ring. Very enjoyable.

It's not a great but decent lens especially when you consider price

I purchased the lens about 6 months ago and use it with my new EOS R7 body, purchased at the same time. It's not as good as I thought it to be. It was giving great pictures for first couple of months. Then the quality deteriorated. The lens struggled to focus even in bright daylight and in high contrast spots. The pictures came out was not sharp at all. I wanted to replace the lens but the Canon return policy was not offering it. So I had to send the lens for repair. The service center told that they did not find any issue with the lens. That's frustrating. They just cleaned it.

Great Lens

Great lens for the price, feels solid handling it and it's lightweight. The size of the lens as well makes it easy to travel with. I use this lens for aviation and sports photography so the fast auto focusing is really nice, especially with faster moving action.

Great telephoto lens for a great price

I'm using the lens for travel photography, sports photography and sports video with an R6. It is fantastic for the price. Focus is sharp and image quality is great. The small size and light weight makes it a good fit for travelers who don't like to cary a large camera bag.

Perfect budget friendly!

The Canon RF 100-400mm was just what I was looking for in a budget telephoto lens. It has just enough zoom for the birds in my backyard or to get closer shots of the zoo animals that like to stay in the back of their exhibits. It's lightweight and easy to use. I'm capable of carrying it around all day and not wear me out. ADORAMA was quick with the delivery and packed the product well too. I would 100% recommend it and ADORAMA to anyone.

Great lens for the price!

As an amateur photographer, I needed a lens that gave me a little extra reach for my EOS R. This worked perfectly. I was able to take photos of a graduation half way across a football field that were amazing. And that was by hand holding. Besides my 50mm, this is going to be my go to lens for a while.

About Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 USM

FEATURED REVIEWS

I love this lens.

By Alan D.

Compared to my 200mm and 400mm zoom lenses that I've used with my Canon 5D Mark IV, this RF Lens is appreciated light weight. I've added a 2X magnified but I'm still OK with the weight and have been taking great photos with this lens on my EOS RP mirrorless camera (lighter than my 5D) without a tripod. All around, a very good experience.using a tripod.

Great lens

By Mr K.

I have a R7 camera and i think this is the one lens if i only had one to choose from. supper lens for sports and wildlife. The photos you see have not had lightroom or other photo touchup.

When capturing the beauty of wildlife, the thrill of sports, or the grandeur of landscapes, the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Lens is an exceptional choice. This compact, lightweight telephoto lens is designed specifically for EOS R Series cameras, providing a versatile zoom range that effortlessly brings distant subjects into sharp focus.

Comparable in size to the EF 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 IS II USM lens, the RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM lens extends its reach to an impressive 400mm. It also boasts rapid Nano USM focusing and up to 6 stops of Coordinated IS when paired with an EOS R series camera featuring In-body Image Stabilization, such as the EOS R5 and EOS R6. With an EOS R/RP camera, you can achieve 5.5 stops.

The RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM lens ensures your images are crisp, colorful, and free from chromatic aberration throughout the entire zoom range, thanks to a single Ultra Low Dispersion lens element positioned towards the front of the lens group. This results in minimal color blur, enhancing the overall quality of your photos.

This lens is also compatible with both the RF1.4x and RF2x tele extenders, effectively increasing the maximum focal length to 560mm and 800mm respectively. The inclusion of a control ring allows for swift changes to settings, including shutter speed and aperture, placing quality, convenience, and control directly in your hands.

Whether you're a professional photographer or an enthusiastic hobbyist, the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Lens, bundled with a 67mm UV filter and microfiber cleaning cloth, is a valuable addition to your camera kit.
