Questions & Answers

Dickson K : Mine says Cannon Tripod Mount Ring B ( W ) is it the real deal ?WADE G : Try it on the lens and see if it fits. They come in two sizes (at least) ; yours should fit the 80-200 f4 L.KEVIN W : Check that the Canon logo matches the font on your lens covers. There are several different authentic version of the mount ring. Mine says "Canon / TRIPOD MOUNT / RING A II (W) / CANON INC. MADE IN JAPAN" (where / means split onto another line) This text comes in three different font sizes. The metallic finish (slightly roughened) should match the body of your lens. It sortof looks like "textured drywall".
Shopper : does this fit the canon 70 -200 2.8 is?RICHARD P : I've only used this mounting ring on the f/4L but doubt it would fit the f/2.8L as this lens is much larger and heavier than the f4/L. There is a mounting ring made specifically for the f/2.8L, however.CHARLES S : It does NOT fit the 2.8 lens. Although that lens is 70-200mm the glass elements are larger than those in the f4 lens. This necessitates a larger lens body which prevents the use of this mount with that lens.ALBERT C : I don't know. I own a 70-200/4 (not IS). The tripod ring works perfectly on my lens and is well constucted.SALLIE P : The 70-200 f4 is much narrower than the 2.8 so can't see how it would fit.JUSTIN L : No, it is just for the f/4 lens. WADE G : I don't know. I use it on the f/4.0 only. However, I would bet that it does fit both.DAVID S : It fits the Canon 70-200mm f/4 lenses but NOT the f/2.8 lenses. DONALD P : No. The 70-200 f/2.8 lenses are larger in diameter.Neil T : No, the barrel of the 2.8 is much larger. The 70-200 2.8 includes the mount ring with purchase, unlike the f4 lenses which require a second purchase.
Shopper : HOW DO YOU USE THE RING?MICHAEL C : It's used with either a monopod or tripod. The ring attaches to the monopod or tripod. The ring also goes around the lens. The knob on the ring allow you to 'lock' the lens in place. By using the ring you can easily rotate the lens (and attached camera) back and forth between horizontal and vertical shots.FREDERICK W K : Loosen the thumb screw shown on the picture. Open the ring and install it on the stated lens. I point the shoe toward the front of the lens. Close the ring and secure loosely with the thumb screw. Install the lens on your camera and position the shoe at the bottom of the lens when installed on the camera. Fully tighten the thumb screw. The shoe is now located nearer the center of gravity for the lens/camera combination. The shoe is now your mounting point for a Mono/Tripod. This provides a much more stable lens/camera combo. You may want to have the shoe pointing toward the camera, depending on the mass of your camera or possibily a lens extender added to the mix. I have a Canon XSi and have installed a 1.4x and 2.0x extender and found the shoe pointing forward is fine.CHARLES S : Simply loosen the white knob on the side of the ring - open it - and place it around the barrel of the lens. You may have to orient the tripod mounting foot either pointing forward or backward, depending on your camera mounting. After placing the ring around the lens retighten the white knob and you're done! The mount then attaches to your tripod.BARRY G : Use it to mount your camera/lens to your tripod head. It provides better balance than mounting the camera directly to the head. Loosen the screw knob, snap the ring open (The ring is hinged to open like a binder ring), snap it shut around the lens barrel and tighten the screw knob. Loosening the knob just a bit will allow you to reposition the camera/lens to vertical (Portrait) when desired. Fully loosen it and snap it open to remove it when it is not needed. I keep a Wimberly mounting plate for my tripod head quick release system attached to the ring.WADE G : Loosening the locknut all the way allows one to open the ring and put it around the barrel of the lens. Then, attached to the tripod, it can be tightened or loosened to allow the lens to rotate from landscape orientation to portrait, or any angle you wish.DOUGLAS H : The ring near the mounting plate for the tripod pulls up and the ring unsnaps. You then fasten it to the lens you are using and close the ring snap shut. Tighten the knob to secure in place or loosen to get whatever angle you want, protrait or landscape and everything in between.ROBERT B : The base of the ring screws onto the platform on your tripod. To open the ring, you pull on the knob and open the ring. You you place your telephoto lens with camera body attached in the ring and snap the ring shut. Normally with smaller lenses you secure the camera body to the tripod by screwing the camera body to the platform on your tripod. However, since the telephoto lens is much bigger and heavier, your camera and tripod would be unstable if the camera body instead of the telephoto lens was used to mount to the tripod.ROBERT G : You loosen the knurled nut, slip the ring over the body of the lens, then tighten the nut for a snug fit around the lens. Attach the lens to your camera then mount the shoe of the ring to your tripod. The camera acts as a counterweight for the heavy lens so that the lens/camera are balanced on your tripod.

Good Stuff

Canon stuff is the best. My bags are full of it. The price is a bit high and some knockoffs are available. But compared to the price of a new Canon L-Series lens, the price is not unreasonable. If you have the 70-200mm/f4L, buy the tripod collar, especially if you plan to use the lens with a teleconverter.

Excellent Product

Fits perfectly, turns smoothly and locks securely on my 400mm. f/5.6 lens. It's expensive, but worth the price. I tried the Vello brand but was disappointed with the fit and operation.

Very Good Product.

The Canon Tripod Mount Ring is a must when using a Tripod or Monopod. It is expensive but has good built quality to match Canon L Lenses.

Great Gear

Althought the Canon EF 70-200 f4L IS USM is light enough to be used without this, I fail to understand why it's not included with the lens. The slight additional cost this might add to the lens purchase would more than offset the hassle of having to order it after the fact.

Canon quality; does the job well

I use this adapter on a Manfrotto 682B self-standing monopod when I cannot use a tripod. The camera (Eos 7d) and lens (70-200mm f/4L) is better-balanced when mounted at the lens which allows the use of the self-standing feature of the monopod. My only real negative (not worth a star demotion) is that the adapter is expensive, and should be supplied with the lens -- perhaps Canon could increase the cost of the lens by half of what this unit costs separately, and include the adapter with the lens).

Solid alternative to the original

I use this product primarily to hold the 70-200mm f/4L USM IS lens to a monopod. It appears to be just as strong and well built as the original Canon ring. It lacks the quick release (you have to unscrew it all the way to get the ring off) but considering all else it is a quality product. Fit is great and the liner is soft on the lens.

Solid product buy way way too expensive

This ring is indeed an excellently manufactured article. With that said, I see no reason that is should cost so much. I'v tried cheaper ring(s) but they were made of plastic and metal as opposed to all metal. I ended up coughing of the cash for this one. I will say that this ring is rock-solid and I have no fear of breakage or deterioration of materials. I do feel that Canon should have included the ring with the lens.

Worth the investment.

I bought the Canon 70-200 USM IS F4L Zoom Lens. This is an excellant addition to the Lens (since it doesn't come with a Tripod Mount). The mount makes it easier to properly balance the Lens-Camera combination on a MonoPod or TriPod. Using the screw mount on the camera biases the weight to the lens, making it difficult to be steady and consistent. The ability to position the mount either toward or away from the camera allows you to maintain the center of balance when using the lens with or without an extender Easily worth the investment to go along with the Lens.

Fits perfectly

Fits the lens perfectly and helps to keep things steady especially when using an extender.
