Questions & Answers

ANDREW F : Not sure why, but my question got messed up. I was asking about the Canon XF105 and the Tascam HS-P82. The question is whether I can slave the Tascam to the Canon and (but alternatively) can I slave the Canon to the Tascam (of course, I understand that it has to be one or the other)? I find the Canon manual next to incomprehensible, so I am trying to figure out whether, if I buy the Tascam, I can slave in either or both directions. Thanks -DAN H : I can't speak for the Tascam unit but the XF-105 can do the timecode in both directions. So it can act as either a master or the slave. I have an XF-305 and an XF-105 and I use the 305 as the OUT and the 105 set as INPUT and they sync in a few seconds. Once they sync together you can unplug the BNC cable and continue with your shoot. However I have them set to FREE RUN which means the timecode does not stop when I stop recording. It runs all the time, which is the way you want it to be I believe. I have the timecode set to the time of day basically (24 hour clock) so the timecode is more useful.
Shopper : My question is about the Canon SF105 and the Canon XF105. Using these two devices, can I slave the timecode in either direction. In other words, can I set the Tascam to start recording when it sees the timecode from the Canon start to move (because I have started recording video recording)? And, can I also do it in the opposite direction. In other words, can I set the Canon as the slave and, if so, will the video start to record whenever the Canon sees the timecode start to move on the Tascasm? ThanksDAN H : I can't speak for the Tascam unit but the XF-105 can do the timecode in both directions. So it can act as either a master or the slave. C : I am not sure the answer to this question, but I would go to the Canon USA website and just download the manual for the camera and maybe the answer is in the manual. Also, call Canon direct at 800-652-2666 and tell them this is a "pre sales" question. Hope this helps. Edward J C.
Shopper : Is this the top of the line or is there one comparable for less. Can I put two 64 gig flash cards? Also will be using this for our church media. I utilize both final cut pro and a pc video editor is there going to be any drawbacks or information that I need to know for editing or production.JAMES D : This is not the top of the line for Canon. It's probably mid range. You can use two 64 GB compact flash cards. 63 GB will give you about 163 minutes of video per card. 32 will give you about 81 minutes per card. You will also need a NLE Video editor. I have been using Edius Pro 6.5 for almost a month and feel it does an excellent job.JAMES K : The low light capabilities are not ideal, but if there is plenty of light, this camera should be perfect for church media. Yes you can use two 50MB/s 64GB cards. Because it records in the MXF format, you'll just have to download the plugin for final cut from Canon's website (on the xf-105 page). Once you do that it'll work fine otherwise your computer won't know what to do with the raw file. You'll need to ask people with a Sony or Panasonic etc, about the cameras in the same price range. I'm not sure about them but the canon also has HD-SDi and genloc if you wanted to do live streaming. ROBERT B : You can install two CF cards in the unit and it will span across the combined storage. Importing data into applications like CS6 is incredibly easy and the quality is phenominal.LAWRENCE D : The XF105 is not top of the line the XF305 is top of the line but the 105 is the top of the line of the 100 series. The XF series all use the same codec and they all work well with Final Cut Pro but I am not sure and PC Video Editor as I don't use that program. You can use two 64gb cards. The less expensive cameras like the XA10 will give you pro audio inputs but it is a different codec. It is a 24mbs AVCHD codec. If you don't need broadcast approval then that codec should be fine. The XF series also has a 4:2:2 color space vs the 4:2:0 of the XA10. Hope that helps Larry

Great Dependable Camera

I bought 2 of the XF105s back in 2013. I have shot countless live events, commercials and more without incident. They are durable and easy to use. I just wish you able to attach higher end lenses to the camera.

Great Picture Quality!

I shoot wrestling, mma, and dance. Got this camera out of the box on Thursday and had to shoot with it Saturday for an all day Dance Competition. What an improvement over my GL2s! Love the Menu and interface. Love how everything I need is built into the camera rather than hooking up multiple adapters. XLR inputs seem to work very well too. Cons: Only cons I have with the camera are -Quick pans with the camera seem a bit off. Hard to describe. -I also wish it had an internal hard drive to go along with the 2 CF Card slots. -Zoom does not go as far as teh GL2s unless there is a setting that I haven't found yet.

Love this camera

Alright, so about a year ago I got a job as a media director at a church. This job consist of almost anything to do with digital media and then some. When I got here there were things I wanted to change because, well they were outdated. I came from our schools webcast team and have had plenty of experience with broadcasting and producing. Well I get here and the camera they have is about 15 years old and I was like ohhh this thing has to go. Well finally after about 10 months and having some extra money we got this baby. The main reason we got this camera was because it was the cheapest we could find with BNC connectors. Needless to say we have only had the camera for about 3 weeks and it is amazing. It is a lot smaller then what I thought it was going to be. But this baby has amazing image quality. I mean crystal clear and beautiful image quality. And the nice thing is that even recording at 1080 the videos files aren't that large. Soon we will be shooting a lot more videos with this, instead of using my HDSLR camera. Also it will be nice to use to go around and grab really nice footage of events that we put on year around. This lil guy is light so it won't be a pain to lug around all day for a long event. Now as for some of the settings I wish I had just a little bit more control over things like gain and shutter speed. You can store 3 presets for for each of these options along with the automatic setting. But this isn't something to complain about too much as you can always go into the menu and quickly change it as need be. I can't wait to really but this camera to the test and shoot some awesome promo material with it.

Wonderful Camera!

I shoot with higher-end (Super 35 sensor cameras. We needed something smaller, easier, more mobile for a specific project. We chose this camera mostly due to the 50Mbps 4:2:2 codec. It performs flawlessly, produces wonderful images, and is a great companion to our bigger cameras. We used to shoot B-roll with DSLR, but find this to be a better solution for most of our needs due to: real audio inputs, better codec, zoom, scopes, focus-assist (peaking), zebras, etc. You can't go wrong with this camera for 90% of uses.

XF-105

Recently we purchased the Canon XF 105 to shot a commercial overseas. The camera's size was ideal for the trip. Overall the camera worked well. There was an instant where the memory card stopped in the middle of a live recording so we lost a valuable speech. To work out the error was easy, but we are worried about this happening again. We do like the camera and are still learning it and using the camera. Stay tuned.

Video Man

By ROBERT

This camera does it all for the legal video specialist, it has the time stamp in seconds and so many option and adjustment for video, white balance, audio, fade to black, color bars and so on. Excellent camera for any pro video person

The Canon XF-105 is a compact, portable, full-featured professional HD video camera with a built-in 10x lens and full HD CMOS sensor. It shares many of the same features as the Canon XF305 and XF300 professional camcorders but with the addition of a built-in zoom lens. This video camera can record infrared, stereoscopic 3-D footage as well as 1080p HD video. The 1/3-inch CMOS sensor delivers exceptional quality, using Canon SX Codec and 4:2:2 color sampling. The camera has a high-resolution LCD monitor and Electronic viewfinder with 100% coverage, and can be customized and used in full manual mode as well as automatic everything.

What you should know about this video professional video camera:
• MPEG-2 4:2:2 50Mbps Codec (Canon XF Codec): Canon's version of MPEG-2 for the XF105 Professional Camcorder, named the Canon XF Codec, ensures the widest compatibility with existing industry infrastructure and non-linear editing (NLE) systems.
• 4:2:2 Color Sampling: 4:2:2 color sampling provides twice the color resolution of HDV and other codecs that use 4:2:0 color sampling.
• Record to Compact Flash Cards: The camcorder features two CF card slots and offers versatile recording functions including relay recording, hot swapping, file copy & backup, and pre-record
• Major NLE Software Compatibility: Canon's XF Codec is supported by the industry's leading manufacturers: Adobe, Apple, Avid and Grass Valley.
• MXF Wrapper: The XF105 uses Material Exchange Format (MXF) for its file structure. It's an internationally standardized container format for the exchange of video and audio material. Using the MXF format, video and audio can be wrapped into a single file along with important metadata
• Genuine Canon 10x HD Lens: Canon's optical expertise is clearly seen in the XF105's Genuine Canon 10x HD Video Lens. It delivers flexibility in image capture with a zoom range of 30.4 - 304mm (35mm equivalent)
• Canon Native 1920 x 1080 CMOS Image Sensor: The XF105 incorporates a native 1/3"", 1920 x 1080 CMOS image sensor, delivering superb full HD video recording with minimal noise
• HD-SDI Output, Genlock and SMPTE Time Code: Aside from providing the professional user with complete control over the image, the Canon XF105 also provides complete creative freedom for inputs and outputs
• Multiple Bit Rates, Resolution, and Frame Rates: Multiple recording modes, resolutions, and frame rates let you use this camcorder creatively in virtually any production environment
• Canon DIGIC DV III Image Processor: Canon's powerful DIGIC DV III Image Processor provides enhanced shading, lifelike tonal gradations, new custom picture settings and lower power consumption
• Built-in 3-D Assist Features: The XF105 can be paired with another XF105 or XF100 camcorder to provide true stereoscopic 3-D recording. It offers several features to assist with 3-D production including OIS Lens Shift to aid in optically aligning the two camcorders
• Infrared Recording: The XF105 features an Infrared Mode allowing users to capture video in conditions with little to no ambient light, a situation which would make other camcorders useless. During infrared capture, the infrared cutoff filter is removed from the optical path
• Brilliant Ergonomics: The XF105 is designed as an ultra-compact camcorder without compromising on features and usability. Its small size makes this camcorder ideal in situations where every inch and ounce count, such as flying to location or going on expedition
• Neutral Density Filter: For enhanced versatility, the XF105 offers a built-in gradation type neutral density (ND) filter (approximately 1/8), as well as an eight-blade metal aperture iris
• SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer: The XF105 also incorporates a newly designed SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization system (lens shift) with three modes: Standard, Dynamic and Powered
• Instant AF: When shooting high definition video, sharp focus becomes more critical than ever. Canon's proprietary Instant AF system combines an external AF sensor with Canon's legendary auto focus system for fast and accurate focus
• 8-Blade Iris: In contrast to a typical 6-blade iris, the XF105's 8-blade iris captures extraordinarily smooth out-of-focus "bokeh" for a more attractive image effect
• Digital Teleconverter: The Digital Teleconverter extends the reach of the optical zoom, and is selectable by 1.5x, 3x and 6x. This feature is ideal when extreme telephoto shooting is needed such as in sports and wildlife, as well as, surveillance applications for law enforcement and the military
• Slow Motion and Fast Motion: Slow and Fast Motion Modes allow the XF105 to record a different frame rate than the playback frame rate, resulting in either a fast or slow motion effect during playback Interval Recording: With this feature, users can program the camera to record a specified number of frames at specified intervals. The technique can be used to observe natural phenomena over extended periods, making it ideal for time-lapse applications
• 3.5" 920K Dot LCD Monitor: A 3.5"", 920,000 Dot LCD monitor provides an ample, accurate area for critical focus confirmation and approximately 100% field of view. The display opens on the left side of the camera body
• 260K Dot Electronic Viewfinder: The XF105 features a 0.24"", 260,000 Dot Color EVF and approximately 100% field of view coverage for comfortable viewing and accurate judgment of composition. Brightness, contrast, color and backlight are adjustable
• Focus Assist Functions: With Canon's new Edge Monitor Focus Assist system, a red and green monitor is shown at the bottom of the LCD display and three red focus check areas are shown across the display Peaking/Magnify: Two peaking modes and a magnify focus assist function are available in standby and record mode (LCD monitor and EVF), making it extremely easy for the XF105 operator to check and confirm critical focus
• Exceptional Customization: Users of the XF105 Professional Camcorder have full manual control of all camera functions to adapt to both technical and artistic challenges when shooting
