Questions & Answers

Stan W : Can this be used as a carry on bag, and will an atlas fit into the bag?ROBERT L : I think you could use this as a carry-on bag,. although I have not done so. You can fit a lot into this bag. I used this in Zion and was able to carry about 4-5 gallons of water, food, light clothing and my camera gear including a tripod- it was actually very comfortable while hiking.CLINTON G : Yes this can certainly be used as a carry on. I have taken this on many trips, including international, even with my carbon fiber tripod on the side. (Though there is debate on if checking the tripod would be a better practice) I am tall and have a long torso - adjusted to it's largest setting it is at the limit for many overhead compartments. I don't do much short-haul domestic. As such I haven't tested this rig in that environment. So, if you are on a MD or CRJ type aircraft a lot (~100 or fewer passengers) be aware. As for an atlas, it depends on the size. Travel size should be no issue. I travel with a 11" MacBook Air (vertically against the back) and that takes a little effort to accomplish. However there is room left for a magazine or two, small journal, and other bits of gear. The point is really that an 8.5" x 11" x 1" book/atlas will be about the largest item you could force in the upper storage and still have room for much else - and you would have to work at getting that big object in. And in that scenario, forget the water pouch. If you want to use that you would have less than half of the storage available. It is a great bag and one of the most comfortable packs I have ever worn of any kind - which is critical when you have 60+ pounds of camera gear on your back.

Awesome adventure pack

I'm a 5'7" female who takes photos in all sorts of conditions, so I bought this pack before my trek through India. It's super comfortable and compact; it doesn't overwhelm my frame like similar packs. It holds a D300 with attached 70-200 lens, plus two other lenses and I actually transported my small video camera as well with both chargers. The only downside is that the camera is less easily accessed than similar models because you have to remove the pack to open the front pocket. Then, there's yet another compartment that has a water hydration system and holds plenty of books and snacks. You could easily hold a 15" laptop, even though there is not a specialized sleeve. Most importantly, the pack distributes the weight correctly on my hips for hours of hiking. I love it!
