Aluminum and steel should never meet. It’s called electrolysis. It’s when iron or steel has constant contact with non-ferrous metal like aluminum. The battery isn’t defective nor is the light. It’s a conceptual error for putting steel case batteries in a aluminum cased housing.

I bought this flashlight about 1 year ago because the first one I owned (same model) I was unable to replace the batteries. I was able to remove the end cap on both lights but unable to remove the battery sleeve. I own 2 other Coast flashlights and 2 headlamps but this is the only one I've had problems with.

This flashlight is an absolute beast when working....By far the best I've ever owned.....We have a Golden retriever we walk regularly and in the winter we need a really good flashlight to keep us safe... I actually had a car stop me and tell me how amazing the flashlight is and they could see me from close to a half a mile away.....Then the battery cartridge stuck inside the light and won't come out....and I'm left with a $90 paperweight. I submitted a claim so hopefully it get resolved... Until then, I'll use one of my other Coast flashlights.....I still believe highly in this company....

I shelled out the almost 90 bucks for this light, thinking it would last a long while. Purchased brand new energizer batteries to install and all was good, for a while. After only 2 months, light stopped working, tried to remove the battery pack, and couldn't. It was completely stuck. Took to a tool repair shop who was able to remove the batteries, and cleaned and replaced with Duracell lithium batteries. Worked great for a while, but after about 2 months the light quit working again. Tried removing batteries again, and couldn't. Took back to repair shop, and had it removed again. Didn't replace batteries this time. Will buy a better light somewhere else. Save your money, this one isn't worth it!!

Apparently there is a issue with this flashlight of untold proportions. I’m looking to remedy this atrocity as I have way too many other problems. I don’t have a bucket list anymore as my bucket is full of other failed crap I have. I’m gonna have to invest in another bucket again. Wife wants all buckets out of the garage adding more misery. Building a pull barn just for buckets. Pray for me that the doesn’t notice. Let me know please if you can do me a solid and pull me out of the spinning event horizon of a black hole before it’s too late. Thank you very kindly.

I have been looking at the reviews and noticed reviews as they pertain to the battery carriage. I feel like the "odd man out" as I am very happy with mine. I've had it for 2-3 years and it had been great. Investing in rechargeable batteries. Great product.

Had HP550 a couple of years. During hurricane, it didn't work, likely due to dead batteries. Was unable to remove battery cartridge without destroying flashlight. Not a great value to spend $70-85 for a light with one battery lifetime.

I bought this light 6 years ago to replace an old 2 cell mag that I had for probably a good 10 years. What a great upgrade. I bought this particular one because I didn’t want a rechargeable pack that I HAD to use. At the time of purchase that was the next big thing. I keep a spare pack of batteries with me so I don’t ever run out of light. This thing throws a great light over almost a 1/4 mile which is perfect out on the farm, fishing, deer tracking, and the occasional bump in the night/ animal in the yard. It’s been dropped on rocks, concrete, rained on, rolled around, taken a dip in the creek even and it still works as good as the day I bought it. Did notice that using a good set of batteries like energizer or Duracell works really good and I haven’t had any problems with corrosion on the battery ends. I did however invest in some rechargeable AA batteries because I like the 100% light it throws with the freshly charged batteries. Best $100 I’ve spent in a very long time

had a bad experience with this product, wrote a bad, yet accurate review, and heard from Customer Service. In the end I would recommend COAST based solely on the customer service. Just avoid this light.

I bought this flashlight after hearing great things!! It was the best flashlight I ever owned....such a great light beam....UNTIL I had to replace the batteries then my nightmare started. I tried all I could and gave up and submitted a warranty claim as these have to be fused in the chamber!!! If not for battery problem this flashlight is easily a 5 star item hands down!!!

Great flashlight....when it works. Just like every other review the Battery cartridge will not come out. So disappointing for such an expensive flashlight- I would never recommend to anyone

This is a nice bright flashlight except it's only a one-time-use item because you will never get the battery pack out. so if you don't mind spending 90-plus dollars on a one-time use flashlight it's great. I have no doubt the sold-out portion of their website on this item actually means discontinued.

Had this for many years but it failed on me...Would not light up anymore. Called in for Warranty and ended up returning it to them. They were very happy to help me with the issue. Just got a replacement today...About 1 week after they got it! Good service! Unfortunately, the HP 550 has been discontinued BUT...They replaced it with a G450! It has MORE LUMs (1400 vs 1075 also uses 6 AA batteries not 9! Looks very strong! It is a bit shorter but that is ok! Love this company! They stick up to their product very well!

Duracell batteries leak once they die out. Do not use Duracell copper tops!

Sorry about my english,,, I cant remove my old batteries. i have been with it for years and it is like new, but i cant remove my old batteries. I still have my HP7 and the head light, they work perfect for years so far, except my HP 550 now giving me a headache. Please help me or replace my flashlight, i feel kind of frustrated since i tried but didn't want to go too far and loose warranty, but now mine has a few scratches on the bottom trying to remove the batteries. I think is fair a replacement since i have been buying several Coast products for years, good quality brand. Anyways, the best flashlight so far, but the battery pack... :(

This is the best flashlight I have ever owned, but if you have ever had a flashlight before, the batteries do wear out. I've tried to pop the red cap out, but there no inertia and therefore, no movement of the cap. Probably corroded, but since I cannot look at the inside of the flashlight, I don't know. All I know is I need a working flashlight and I am hosed.

After four years of owning a Coast HP550 flashlight, the battery magazine has become stuck. Normally the magazine slides out due to gravity, but it is stuck now and there is no surface area upon which one can get a grip with, and pull it out. This is a poor design for such an expensive torch.

I recently bought a Coast HP550 and have found it to be the best overall flashlight I’ve owned. When I ran into difficulty replacing the batteries after extensive use, I contacted Coast and without question, they replaced my unit with a new one. Light is terrific, service even better!

This light is awesome. You can set it on wide which is great for blood trailing while hunting or navigating your kayak through low visibility areas or you can put it on sharp focus for max distance. I love this light and use it for virtually everything.

after much struggle to replace my dead batteries in my flashlight I decided to disassemble as much as I could find out the reasoning that the battery case had gotten stuck inside my flashlight come to find out the plastic battery case melted to the inside of the flashlight the batteries inside or completely fine they did not a road so there is an overheating issue and I hope that Coast corrects this before there's a serious loss of property or life. Has anyone else deconstructed the inside to find the cause? Coast is replacing my entire.flashlight for no charge except Im not happy about having to pay for shipping and as for the product ITS great except for the issue I had...So3 stars for product warranty and their customer service.

After my HP550 failed after several years of use, COAST honored their lifetime warranty. Good for them and their product support team. Tyler Peterson was my contact person and he handled everything very efficiently. Thanks!

Quality build, very nice light bought for a gift and he loves it
The HP550 Flashlight uses Coast's Pure Beam Focusing Optic System with Slide Focus to harness the light and create a superior beam quality from spot to flood. The Bulls Eye spot beam pattern gives you a great focused spot while producing an outer ring of flood light which allows you to see a broader area to the sides. The flood beam is broad and consistent, giving you a clear field of vision not seen with typical focusing flashlights. A quick cycle switch allows you to select between a high output setting to a low output setting with ease. Built tough, an impact-resistant, lightweight aluminum casing resists rust and corrosion. The HP550 also features an unbreakable LED and rubberized O-ring for reliable water resistance and durability.
With Coast's commitment to quality, the HP550 Flashlight is impact resistant, weather resistant and its LED is virtually unbreakable. The HP550 Flashlight is backed by Coast's lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Tested and rated to ANSI/FL1 standards.
Tested and rated to ANSI/FL1 standards.
Pure Beam Focusing Optics
The Pure Beam Focusing Optic combines our largest Ultra View Flood Beam with the Bulls-Eye Spot Beam making either up close or downrange illumination highly effective. While using the Ultra View Flood Beam, there is a consistent circle of light up to 11.5 feet (3.5 meters) in diameter at 6 feet (1.8 meters) in distance. While on the Bulls-Eye Spot Beam, you can illuminate up to 767 feet (234 meters) downrange with a transition halo around the spot to increase the effective viewing area.
