Coast EAL17 Emergency Area Lantern, 460 Lumens, 4x D Battery

I bought this lantern for the Jan 2026 sever storm coming only to find out you can't use regular D size batteries!!!!! This warning should be CLEARLY indicated on the outside of THE BOX. Had I known this I never would have bought this. Now I'm stuck without backup lighting should I loose electricity!!!!!!!!!

I am convinced that products made in Asia simply have no QC. Had it six months. Power went down. Loaded new batteries (once I figured out the crazy battery compartment) and still never worked. Just tossed $30 in the trash. I also let the store where I purchased know what happened and they steered me to a reliable manufacturer.

Love the light, had it by my desk when the power suddenly went out. Turned it on and it lit up the whole room very brightly. Sturdy lamp and has a convenient hook to use anywhere. Can also go into emergency mode with res light and strobe when needed. Awesome lamp to add with my other Coast lamps i have for outdoor and indoor needs.

The lantern is not bad, plenty of light and easy to use. I did notice one quirk though, it has a buzz when turned on. At first I thought it might be due to old batteries but I bought new ones(Energizer) and the buzz was still there. I plan on posting a video review on my YouTube channel in a few weeks, just look for Darren Gator.

I had been meaning to purchase a couple more of these Area lights and when they bundle went on sale I decided to bite the bullet and buy them for camping and my earthquake preparedness kit. I ordered two and I charged them up when I received them. about a week later my neighbors tree was blown over and knocked out poser to my neighborhood. Having these charged area lights was a great help in keeping my house lit up at night for extended power outage. These lanterns threw out a good amount of light and remained on for a pretty good amount of time. I recommend these for anyone who camps or wants to be prepared for an emergency.

I just eal18 put in the battery but it gave off the smell. And the light did not turn beside the red light. What am I doing wrong?

This light is gonna come in very handy for camping Summer is finally upon us And I have a very nice 30' long camper And when the sun finally set's down It's nice to know you can still hand still have a card game name display your snacks next just plain and simple to be able to see what you're doing so that you're not tripping over logs logs or anything else and you can actually see and enjoy your company.

These are my go-to lanterns for camping and power outage situations. They sip the power and put our a quality light that is not harsh on the eyes and lights a good amount of area. I do not store them with batteries in them as I have had some that the batteries leak but in other products, this has occurred Coast has replaced them which is unheard of from other companies as storing them with batteries is a known no-no. In past usage, I get more than the stated time of run time on them.

I bought this lantern 6 months ago and it has not worked reliably at all. My house was being restored after a fire and I needed it in the house when there was no electricity. Throughout it's life it has only lit up occasionally and often does not operate at all. Coldness causes it to stop functioning. I live in Canada so it can get cold. However, the summer was no better. Sometimes it would light up but it would not shut down. I've changed the batteries and still no change. Nice light when it works, but you can say the same about some automobiles.

Took this lantern camping with us. The white coating on the light, diffuses the bright light so it doesn't blind you. Loved it.

I put a review on here a couple of days ago but don't see it anymore. Regardless, my light failed in under 2 years. Contacted Coast and they replaced it a no charge. Great! Not many companies offer a 5 year guarantee.

Bought this about 1-2 years ago. Worked great in the beginning however the battery compartment is poorly designed and lead to a spring twisting. Once that happened, poor contact was made so the light rarely worked. The battery compartment also rusted, which did not do the springs any favour. And yes, I always used fresh batteries and they never leaked. I recently purchased another brand area light. I noticed it has springs at the bottom of the battery compartment but not at the top. They use a copper strip instead of another set of springs. Basically the major fault with the Coast lantern is when you twist the battery compartment cover, you end up twisting the springs. I know that's isn't supposed to happen, but it did with me. If the battery compartment was redesigned this would be a great product. UPDATE: Coast are replacing it with a new one and sending our free of charge. Not may companies offer the 5 year guarantee like Coast!
