Small but bright
Purchased a HP4 twenty years ago and use it daily for small engine repairs. I can look into the spark plug hole and other areas to do inspections. I recently purchased a new HP2R which is small and can clip to my hat or shirt pocket. I have a G450 and man that baby is super bright.

Warranty gripe
I like the coast flashlights I have purchased, the warranty is easy. Coast would get a five star or higher from me except for one annoying point. The BLACK flashlight I received is a warranty replacement for the RED flashlight I originally purchased. I purchased RED for a specific reason. In my opinion I should receive like for like. It's kind of a petty gripe I admit. Other than that they have a fantastic product and great warranty. I use my flashlight daily, every day, and have purchased multiple lights from coast and will buy more in the future.

Perfect pen light
This may be the perfect penlight. Great aluminum body, a push button switch on the cap that actually works and it takes two AAA batteries. Enough light to see what you are looking for or where you are going. Small and light enough to put anywhere even a small tote. Pop it in your mouth for hands free without pulling your teeth out. Keep one under the front seat of the car and one in my go bag

poor engineering
i have had 2 of them the first lasted 8 months worked great loved the size perfect my side pouch the rubber covering the switch wore out
purchased a second one it lasted 2 months the rubber came off probably wont purchase this product again

great light
I have used coast HP-4 for 5 years. I have had to have it replaced under warranty 3 times.
BUT understand that I use it probably 100 times each day and every day. I use it a lot and I use it hard, Slightly less on weekends but it is always in my bibs, except at church of course. This is a reflection on both the solid dependable build and great customer service I have received over the years. I would buy this light even if it didn't have a life time warranty. I am going to be buying one of each color soon so I always have a back up.

Full Disclosure: Coast provided me this HP4 in order for me to test them out. But, everything I will talk about here is my own opinion.
Coast Portland was not given copy approval nor any editorial input in this review. That means, they're reading this review for the first time along side you.

1) Build Quality/Overview:
? The light feels premium in the hand with semi-coarse knurling
? It is entirly made of high strength anodized aluminum
? The tail cap unscrews in order to remove the battery
? The button is a high travel, stiff, mushy, high positive tactile button with a rubber cap over it
2) Weight:
? 2.22 oz (63 grams). That's about the weight of 11 United States Quarters
3) Opperation and Modes:
? The operation of the light is controlled by one button on the back of the light
? There is only one mode
? There is a momentary on mode
4) Charging Port:
? No charging port built into the light itself. Instead, there is a Micro-USB charging port built into the optional ZX110 battery
5) Battery and Charging:
? The light is powered by 2 alkiline AAA battery. It can also run on the Coast ZX110 lithium-ion rechargeable battery
? The ZX110 battery is a 10900 cell
? The ZX110 battery has a built-in Micro- USB charging port and a charging indicator on the top of the battery
? A solid red light indicates charging and a solid green light indicates the battery is fully charged

8) Final Thoughts:
This is a standard run of the mill pen light. Nothing special or specifically tailored here to note. The HP4 has a standard Bulls-Eye beam pattern with a hotspot in the center surrounded by a bit of spill. For me, the beam is something I do not prefer, as I prefer a smooth even beam. For that reason, I prefer the HP3r instead.
The HP4 is nearly identical to the G20 interms of build, size, and operation. The only differences being the HP4 being much brighter and having a Bulls-Eye beam pattern with a hotspot instead of the inspection beam pattern on the G20. Overall, it is a well built pen light, but I think it is priced a tad high.

Disappointed in the evolution.
Not like the light it replaced, this model no longer has momentary on. This was a feature that I used frequently, not happy with loss of it. I will probably look to other brands that use this feature in the future. The light is an overall tough flashlight, but lacks the feature that made it stand out before.
