Feels like this knife has decent build quality, the lockup is solid and resists closure and slippage. Basic liner lock mechanism. Liner steel is about 1/16" (~2mm) thick which is common with plastic handle knives. The nub for opening is ambidexterous/symmetrical but does not function as an emerson feature/pocket hem opener. Though it is held on with a small torx screw and I'm sure with a little know-how you could modify this or make your own tabs. It comes sharp enough I decided to leave the factory edge until it dulls rather than sharpening out of the box as I typically do. That said, sharp out of the box can be a hit and miss kind of thing so no promises from me. The pocket clip is nice, carries with the whole thing almost completely tucked beneath the edge of the pocket, but I do find it odd that the clip is just so long. I worry a little bit that it will some day snag on something as I'm walking by and either just bend the clip way out and make it super awkward to use until I remove/fix it, and/or it could pull the knife from my pocket making me lose it or worse get cut. I work, hike, climb, etc. so falling or getting caught up with a knife coming lose could be a big deal. All that said, there is a second safety on the rear of the pivot, but it only locks the blade open, not closed. And it rotates VERY freely to the open position with only minimal friction. I can make it open without even swinging my arm, just a motion like quickly turning a door knob. (palm down to palm up) I would use this for something like.. around the garden, maybe foraging, craft tasks and such... but I would not take this camping with me. Not because it isn't a good knife but because I have much experience in outdoor and heavy use scenarios, and there are features that stand out to me as beneficial for having a tool in your pocket all day long, being safe there, useful in all applicable scenarios, and reliable in the ways I need... this is such a specific tool, I think it will live at home for the most part. If it does come somewhere with me, it will be secondary. Sorry, I'm an artist and my critique is honest. But again, let me me fair. For the price it's excellent. I would buy again, it's a cool little tool and will be great with things that are fibery and perhaps normal blades just slide off of, that is where these curved blades especially shine. In my experience.

I am an arborist and this is the perfect knife for tracing wounds on thin barked trees. Excellent value in the arborist supply catalogs this costs a lot more

If you are in any electrical trade or any other trade where you're actively seeking out a hawkbill style blade for work. Look absolutely no further. 20 bucks, razor sharp, easy to sharpen, holds edge, and with the double lock you can get a little wild and freaky without worrying about the knife failing on you. 11/10 fantastic knife I will never buy a different hawkbill ever.

I've only had the knife a month. I carry it everyday at work. Blade has kept its edge. The double blade locks is a plus. Nice knife.

DX 300 Best on the Market

Since my days in the Coal Mines I have always been a hook bill knife user; this knife is the best I have ever owned! I am so glad I found Coast 3 years ago and will use them for all my lighting and knife needs!
The DX300 is designed for jobs like cutting carpet, trimming linoleum, and pruning plants. Utilizing Coast's Double Lock technology, anyone can work with confidence knowing that the added safety prevents the knife from accidentally closing. The nylon handle is checkered and molded for a secure grip. The knife easily opens with one hand using the thumb studs on the blade, and you can keep it secure with a deep-carry pocket clip.
With Coast's commitment to quality, the DX300 Knife is backed by Coast's lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.
Double Lock
The Double Lock System works with the knife's Liner-Lock to not just make it safe, but double safe. When the blade is opened, the Liner-Lock automatically engages and locks the blade open, but when extremely rugged cutting is anticipated, the user can push the Double Lock switch forward. When in the forward position, the switch blocks the Liner-Lock from disengaging and thereby preventing the blade from closing on your hand. The safety detent-action is adjustable to your desired tension with a screw on the side of the knife.
To operate, simply open the blade and push the switch atop the knife forward to engage the Double Lock and pull back to disengage. The knives still have a Liner-Lock to disengage as well to close the blade.
