Questions & Answers

ANGEL M : Does the Rockland Colloid Liquid Light, Black & White Emulsion is good for wet plate photography??? I mean if it is ok to expose a plate prepared with it direct in a view camera instead of in the darkroom with an enlarger??? Thanks...KIM G : I've never experimented with the product in this way - keep in mind that it is meant to be used as a positive image, by that I mean you expose it with a negative. If you put it in a camera, you will of course end up with a negative instead (which is what I suspect you are after using glass plates). The exposure time is lengthy - but in bright sun this might actually work. You'll need to experiment - I'd love to hear about your results. Regards, KimALEXANDRA G : You can do that, but if you're using glass plates be aware that it's difficult to coat evenly and will take a very long time to dry.ROBERT P : While it isn't practical "wet" as the emulsion will sag and drip until it has cooled and hardened, it is certainly okay to expose in a camera. It is used to produce dry plates and tin types for camera use. I've used the somewhat more sensitive Ag-Plus version to produce tin types (first attempt is posted on the fotofanatic site). I haven't used it on glass but others have. You will find a great deal of useful information in Christopher James The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes, second edition, especially Chapter 20, Tintypes & Hand-Applied Emulsions and Chapter 22, Wet Collodion & Gelatin Dry Plate Emulsion. Also, Jill Enfield's Guide To Photographic Alternative Processes mentions coating on glass in her chapter on liquid emulsion prints. Glass requires suitable preparation as discussed in James book and the Liquid Light instruction sheet. The glass plate will not fit in a regular modern film holder. You will need a plate holder or other means of holding the plate. Exposures will be long. I'd love to see the results. Good luck!
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?BRUNA S : PhotoCAROLYN M : only one I know aboutJULIA N : I have used Liquid Light before on fabric and now I will be trying plastics. The emulsion is good.

Works well

I've never used any brand of liquid emulsion before so I didn't have any expectations. I used warm tap water in a large pitcher and set the bottle (cap on) inside to bring the emulsion to a liquid pourable state. It felt like I was coating my paper ( a few different types of water color paper) with thick masking fluid. After letting it dry (I used a blow dryer on a low setting on the back side to ensure it would absorb into the fibers of the paper) I used it just as I would any photo paper under my enlarger. My images came out really well! I'm excited to move beyond my paper tests to other mediums!

Great product!

By A M.

I've been using this emulsion with great results on canvas and paper.

While Liquid Light Black and White Emulsion is a professional-grade gelatine-silver emulsion, its innovative design allows for easy application on any material, opening up a world of creative possibilities for photographers and artists alike. This versatile emulsion can be used to print high-quality photographs on a variety of surfaces, including wood, glass, ceramics, plastics, chinaware, fabrics, metals, stone, walls, and even artist's canvas. You can even use it to create unique prints on an egg!

This durable emulsion offers a refreshing alternative to standard, off-the-shelf photographic papers. It allows you to create salon-grade prints on a multitude of handmade papers, adding a unique touch to your photographic creations. The process of printing with Liquid Light is as straightforward as using black-and-white enlargement paper. Simply brush the emulsion under an amber or red safelight onto your chosen surface, wait for it to firm up, and then expose it using an enlarger or slide projector.

The final product is processed with conventional paper developer and hardening fixer, resulting in an archivally-permanent print that boasts a full range of tones, from warm blacks to clean, transparent highlights. These highlights reveal the texture and color of the underlying material, adding depth and dimension to your prints.

One of the exclusive features of Liquid Light is its specially designed formula for easy darkroom coating. It provides coverage of 1 1/2 square feet or more per ounce, making it an economical choice for large projects. Moreover, unlike other brands, Rockland emulsions, including Liquid Light, contain no phenol, eliminating any concerns about toxic fumes or odors. The contrast of this emulsion is medium high, approximately #3 grade, ensuring your prints have a rich tonal range.

In essence, Liquid Light Black and White Emulsion is the perfect tool for photographers and artists seeking to push the boundaries of their craft, offering a blend of quality, versatility, and safety that is hard to match.
