Good cleaner, could use better container

Safe cleaner for slides. Pretty volatile, probably necessary to avoid residue on slides, but can smell it even with container tightly closed. I leave it near an open window when not in use.

The only film cleaner that works

After three decades of producing chromes, mostly 35mm slide film on Kodak or FUJI film stock, I could not make reproduction ready scans without using PEC-12 Emulsion cleaner. PEC-12 was recommended to me by both Kodak and FUJI professional services.

Great stuff!

I have only used it once, but it did wonders on a picture that had scotch tape running down the middle, and ink smeared on it. Worked like a charm.

Clean Slides and Negatives

I use this product to clean my 35mm slides and color/black and white negatives prior to scanning them on my Canon scanner to a digital format. I am cleaning slides that I've had for 30 years and traveled with me when I was stationed in Hawaii and Okinawa. With humidity and the wear and tear of transporting them with all my household goods, they were in pretty bad shape. I needed somethig to clean them prior to scanning and the PEC-12 worked great. Make sure that you use this cleaner in a well ventillated area because it has a strong smell. The first time I used it my eyes were burning before I had cleaned the first 20 slides. Also, be sure to use a soft lint free cloth with the PEC-12 to achieve the best results.

Better than no treatment

Helps clean up old slides but if there is a lot of fungi present it just smears it around.

it worked half of what I expected!

I think my picture was too messed up and that's why this product did not work well for me, I followed the instructions, and it did took some spots off like 3% overall.

Works great on older prints.

Works great on older prints in preparation for scanning. Don't try it on news prints. My experience with newly printed prints that are dry the PEC-12 will remove the ink/s.

Cleaning old film is difficult

I have thousands of negatives and slides, filed in sleeved polyethylene sheets, in 3-ring binders, going back into the 1960's. I am in the process of scanning as many as I can, at high resolution and 16-bit color. But removing the dust, dirt, smudges, and even fungi on old color negatives, is daunting. So I am working my way though all available cleaning processes, from solvents, to brushes, to electrostatic zapping. PEC-12 is a mixture of methanol and n-butyl acetate. This combination is flammable and moderately toxic, but it evaporates quickly and without leaving a residue. The jury is still out on whether PEC-12 will be the best solution for any of these problems.

Believe it, it cleaned the whole thing!

As a digital photo restoration artist, I do hundreds of restorations with images dating back to the 1800's. As you might expect, some are in pretty bad condition, ink smudges, surface dirt and grime, ball point ink somebody writing directly on the picture. I was spending countless hours "digitally cleaning these up before I got to the "real work" with the important part of the images themselves. I heard about PEC-12 but was very skeptical. I could not afford to ruin one-of-a-kind precious images. I cautiously tried it on corners of images to test the type of emulsion to be sure there would be no damage. I then carefully "clean up" the images BEFORE scanning anything. Hours saved in digital restoration time by having cleaner and therefore, sharper, images to deal with. It is now part of my digital restoration workflow. Easy to use and can count on PEC-12 to get "more perfect" originals every time.

Best Price From a Pro Retailer

This product is a bit overpriced anywhere you can purchase it. But, it does the job, and Adorama had it in stock and at about the best price.

Amazing results

I used this product to clean some old WWII era black and white prints. It removed ink from one photo and gunk from another without damaging or changing the quality of the photo. The bottle size is a little small and would be nice to have something with twice the volume but that is the only complaint I have.

Teriffic product

Terrific product. Although I use it more for non-film uses. Cleans sharpie marker off non-porous surfaces completely. Removes adhesives and other goo that Acetone, Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Methanol, Ethanol, mineral spirits and Isopropyl Alcohol will not. A pretty good film cleaner also.

Good product, hard to work with

Good cleaner for old slides I'm scanning, but difficult to apply in the small quantities needed. It is not easy to remove when you get too much on the slide.

About Photographic Solutions PEC-12

Since 1983, PEC-12, Photographic Emulsion Cleaner has been trusted by the world's most prestigious photographers, labs, museums and publishers. Not only does PEC-12 routinely save many of their most valuable images, but it is the ONLY archival cleaner available. What good is cleaning an image today, only to have the emulsion slowly deteriorate over time? PEC-12 is a non-water based film and print cleaner which removes virtually all non-water based stains from color and B&W slides, negatives and prints. PEC-12 removes grease pencil, adhesive residue, finger oils, ball-point pen, fungus, smoke & soot damage, laser separation oil and most permanent inks. Containing no water, PEC-12 dries instantly with no emulsion swelling and leaves no residue.

PEC-12 is a waterless Photographic Emulsion Cleaner which is suitable for use on most film and print emulsions. It is a blend of organic hydrocarbon solvents with a neutral pH and is free from chlorofluorocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons. It dries instantly, leaves no residue and meets archival needs. Because it contains no water, PEC-12 will not cause emulsion swelling, tackiness, water marks or other damage associated with re-washing.

PEC-12 is designed to remove non-water based stains, grease, and inks from photographic emulsions and bases. It removes finger oils, grease pencil, adhesive tape residues, mildew, smoke and soot damage, gold foil stamp and most ball-point and permanent inks. It will aid in the removal of firmly affixed adhesive tape. Graphic arts applications include the easy removal of wax and rubylith.
