Does make the sky darker but at the expense of some light gathering ability Your exposures need to be longer to compensate especially for astrophotography

The filter is well made and the glass is well coated to help make it easy to rid the filter of dust and humidity. I have taken some night time test shots and it does definitely reduce the light pollution from sodium vapor lamps. The real test will come later in April and May when I photograph the Milky Way. Typically, the residual light pollution affects the results but based on my tests, I am expected great improvement.

This filter is the best I’ve used for night photography. All of the breakthrough filters are fabulous. If you are looking for a filter system breakthrough a serious contender. Purchase the magnetic filters then the cheaper step up rings for your lens size. I’m not a paid sponsor. I’ve paid full price for the system. Purchased step up rings for all lens sizes then magnetic filters of various degrees. Fabulous construction. Five star!!

Light Pollution. Eliminated.
Each Night Sky filter delivers incredible starlight definition and true color neutrality. Each Night Sky filter is weathersealed in Breakthrough Photography's rugged X4 traction frame and features an incredibly durable MRC16 and nanotec coatings for easy and fast cleaning.
Built for outdoor photographers.
Artificial light pollution ranges between 570 to 610 nanometers on the visible light spectrum. Artificial light pollution can reduce starlight definition by up to 50%. The orange color cast decreases contrast between the stars and the space behind them, making an otherwise black backdrop of space look orangish.
Eliminates light pollution non-destructively.
Eliminating light pollution is essential to capturing beautiful Night Sky images, however finding a location to shoot without light pollution can be incredibly difficult if not impossible depending on where you're shooting. Eliminating light pollution in post-processing is a destructive type of editing, whereas with a Night Sky filter light pollution is eliminated non-destructively.
Rugged weather-sealed traction frame.
Built for harsh environments, Breakthrough Photography's industry first traction frame completes the weathersealing on your lens to protect against dust, moisture and other outdoor elements. The rugged traction frame also allows a strong grip for removal and attachment. Backed by Breakthrough Photography's 25 Year Ironclad Guarantee, each Night Sky filter is designed to last decades of continual use in the field.
No vignetting down to 16mm on a full-frame setup
Ultra-slim circular filter frames are designed to eliminate vignetting on wide-angle full-frame setups.
How to capture brighter starlight
Sky darkness and light pollution are going to be the two most essential factors which determine how bright your starlight will be.
When the moon is at it's brightest phase starlight can appear up to 50% less bright.
If strong light pollution exists starlight brightness can appear 50% less bright.
When moon brightness is at it's highest level and there's a high level of light pollution exists starlight can appear 100% less bright.
Little to no light pollution and a dark moon phase combined increases starlight brightness significantly.
A Night Sky filter works wonders by making the backdrop of space appear more black, making each individual star stand out more, significantly increasing starlight definition.
