Questions & Answers

RICHARD S : Good afternoon, I`m trying to get a better more powerful eye piece for my celestron. LCM 80. it came with a 25mm and a 9mm eye piece would the 40mm be more powerful and if not what would I need to be a bit more powerful?DAVID H : A 40mm lens would be less powerful. Magnification is calculated by dividing the telescope focal length by the lens focal length. Your telescope has a focal length of 900mm. The magnification for various lenses would be: Lens Mag •40mm900/40= 22.5X •30mm900/30= 30.0X •25mm900/25= 36.0X •20mm900/20= 45.0X •15mm900/15= 60.0X •10mm900/10= 90.0X •9mm900/9= 100.0X •5mm900/5= 180.0X I believe Celestron has a 6mm lens in the same Omni series. That would give you a magnification of 150X. The 40mm will give you better views of deep space objects (large but faint). The smaller lenses are generally for planetary viewing. Keep in mind that as you ramp up the power, any little bump or vibration will have a greater effect in the eyepiece. It might be best to find a local star party and ask to try someone else's lens to see how they work with your telescope.JAMES R : I had the same thought: I want to see closer. Let me know your decision.JEFF C : If powerful means magnification the smaller the size the greater the magnification. I would say your 9mm eyepiece is plenty powerful. There are smaller eyepieces though.Hart S : Your 9mm eyepiece yields 100x power, which is about the practical limit for your telescope. The 9mm eyepiece is more powerful than the 25mm, which is more powerful than the 40mm. Divide the focal length of your telescope (900mm) by the focal length of the eyepiece to get magnification power. Your viewing experience will dramatically improve with a better 9mm eyepiece, perhaps something in the $40 to $90 range.
doug t : will this lens work on a discovery kids telescpoe 1.25in?Hart S : In a nutshell, YES. The 40 mm will give you a little bigger view while a 32 mm gives you a little more magnification. Go for the 40 mm.RICHARD D : I was unable to locate your scope using the terms: "Discovery Kids Telescope 1.25", so I am not exactly sure what you are dealing with. I would first check to make sure that your focuser accepts 1-1/4" (1.25) eye pieces. You can measure the outside diameter of the barrel that slips into the focuser on one of your existing eyepieces to make sure. Also be sure you want a low magnifcation eyepiece suitible for viewing starclusters and wider areas of the sky because that is where this eyepiece is best suited. I own this eyepiece and it is of fine quality, but I think if i had to shop this category again I would choose the 32mm Omni eyepiece. The 32mm Omni will show you the same slice of the sky but the objects will appear just a bit larger. I would like to quote an article I found on the subject: "The apparent field of view (AFOV) of the 32mm Omni is 52-degrees and the AFOV of the 40mm is 43-degrees, due to vignetting caused by the 1.25" mounting barrel. This result of this difference in AFOV is that in any given telescope the 40mm and 32mm Plossls have essentially the same actual field of view. The 40mm is brighter because it has a larger exit pupil, while the 32mm makes everything in the field of view larger." - Believe me, the difference in brightness at this focal lenth, 32mm to 40mm is a non-issue. In summary, you can't go wrong with either piece at these prices but your best bang for your buck is the 32mm.CRAIG R : Hi Doug, I'm not familiar with that specific scope, but this eyepiece will fit any scope that uses 1.25" eyepieces. When you use an eyepiece like this, you'll find it gives you less magnification, and shows you more of the sky. That is nice for things like star clusters that are too wide to fit in your scope's view with higher magnification. But when I want to look at the moon, for example, I use eyepieces with more magnification and a narrower view. In my scope a 25mm eyepiece shows the whole moon and fills up the view pretty nicely. If I want to zero in on features of the moon, I can use a 12mm eyepiece to look closer, but it shows less of the moon. You may already be familiar with how to calculate magnification power for your scope, but I'll throw this in just in case you aren't. First you need to know the focal length of your scope. Sometimes it is printed on the scope, but if not, you should be able to find it in the manual. Then divide the focal length of the scope by the focal length of the eyepiece. That tells you the magnification power. For example, in my scope with a 900mm focal length, this 40mm eyepiece gives 22.5X power. Then you can calculate the actual field of view by dividing the "apparent field of view" for the eyepiece by the magnification. Hope that helpsJOSE M : I checked the Discovery Channel store and not all the scopes indicated the eyepice format. The Celestron 40mm Omni eyepiece will fit any telescope as long as they are 1.25 in as you indicated yours was. I own one of these eyepieces and can tell you it is an excellent eyepiece at a great price. Please note that the higher the focal length of the eyepiece (in this case 40 mm, which is considered high), the lower the magnification you'll get from your telescope.BUSINESS O : Yes -- probably. A 40mm eyepiece is a good eyepiece to start observing with. It has a wide field of view which makes acquiring new objects easier. Not sure which telescope you are referring to specifically, but typically there are two sizes of eyepiece and this plossal will work in a telescope typically designed for kids. (The other size tends to be put in larger telescopes that are more permanently mounted). Hope this helps.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?JEFF B : to go with my first telescopeDAVID C : 40 mm is the size I want. I have a 2x and 3x Barlow. Plenty of power for my 4 1/2 inch scope. Price and delivery time were factors in this choice, and Celestron is a reasonable (I hope) quality brand.Josh R : I want to see as much as possible in the sky with my Celestron, we’ve been able to see some cool things with just a 15mm lens so this is exciting!JOHN M : Replacement for lost 40mm (Original C8 "Orange Tube" 1977!). Need a wide field eyepiece.RAYMOND M : More powerful lens than i currently have.RICKY M : Experiment

Eye Candy!

I needed a quality built low power, wide field eyepiece for my new 9.25" Edge HD OTA that also wouldn't break the bank. This 56mm eyepiece fits what I have wanted. My eyesight isn't as good as it once was so I hope this 56mm eyepiece will make viewing the cosmos more efficient. We have had a pretty lousy late winter/early spring as far as cloud cover, wind, snow and rain showers and I haven't had any real opportunity to view through this eyepiece, What I can say is this eyepiece is much lighter than the 23mm eyepiece that came with my OTA. This eyepiece has made balancing my OTA easier.

Nice lens

Seems to be pretty good. I have a 4 1/2" f:8. I haven't actually looked at the night sky with it, but the phone pole a half mile away comes in quite clearly. "High Voltage" sign crystal clear.

Great planetary eyepiece for long refractors

Nice heavy, well made eye piece. I use the 15mm on a 60mm f13 scope, as my planetary eyepiece. The Images are crisp, edge to edge. Also great for splitting doubles.

Good stuff

This was an easy and inexpensive way to modify our telescope. My 3yo loves that he can now see clear views of Jupiter and it's four moons. The site was easy to explore and the next time I look to upgrading my telescope, we'll be back.

It has a nice finish overall but the optics is less then desired. For the price meade 4000 series 40mm possl would perform better then this.

Decent quality for the price

The quality is ok for the price, but the angle of view is quite small (barely covers the moon) and with the celestron cometron telescope, I have to keep adjusting the position of the telescope which causes shake all the time. If your telescope's mount is alt-azimuth mount, then this is the problem with such a small angle of view.

Plossl Eyepeice with some flair!

Great upgrade to the eyepieces provided with my telescope. Had to get a special adapter for my digital camera use but may well be worth it based on my naked eye usage so far. Bright and sharp to the eye.

Great Eye Relief for Eyeglass Wearers

I am using this eyepiece on a Celestron C70 for terrestrial viewing via the standard eyepiece adapter supplied with the C70. This gives me a bright clear image with a magnification of about 18. The feature I like best is the long eye relief because I wear glasses. This eyepiece is longer and heavier, however, than the zoom eyepiece that comes with the C70.

Celestron 40mm Omni 1.25 Plossl Eyepiece

I enjoy using this eyepiece for viewing nebula, galaxies and other relatively large field objects. It produces a nice wide crisp view. It is also handy when trying to locate objects before upping the magnification.

Great planetary eyepiece for long refractors

By Andy B.

Nice heavy, well made eye piece. I use the 15mm on a 60mm f13 scope, as my planetary eyepiece. The Images are crisp, edge to edge. Also great for splitting doubles.

The Celestron 40mm Omni Series 1.25" Plossl Eyepiece is a testament to superior optical engineering, offering amateur astronomers and stargazing enthusiasts a high-quality, durable, and versatile accessory for their telescopic endeavors. This eyepiece is designed to elevate your celestial viewing experience with its 43-degree field of view, providing a broad and immersive panorama of the night sky.

Crafted with precision, the Omni Plossl eyepiece features a 4-element premium symmetrical design that ensures sharp, clear images of stars, planets, and other celestial bodies. The high-grade optics are further enhanced by blackened lens edges, a critical detail that significantly reduces internal reflections and boosts contrast, allowing for a more detailed observation of the cosmos.

To ensure the highest level of light transmission and contrast, each lens surface is treated with a multi-layer coating. This meticulous process results in brighter, more vivid images, making the eyepiece a user-friendly choice for both seasoned astronomers and beginners alike.

The Celestron 40mm Omni Series eyepiece also boasts a two-step anodizing process on the eyepiece barrel, which serves to eliminate distracting reflections that can detract from your viewing experience. This attention to detail sets the Omni series apart from competitors, whose eyepieces often feature reflective surfaces that can hinder observation.

Additionally, the threaded barrels of the eyepiece are compatible with 1-1/4" Celestron thread-in filters, allowing for further customization and enhancement of your viewing sessions. Whether you're scanning the heavens for distant galaxies or observing the intricate craters of the moon, the Celestron 40mm Omni Series Plossl Eyepiece is an affordable, high-quality choice that promises to enrich your astronomical adventures.
