Questions & Answers

Shopper : is the magnification good? I want to see planets not dotsGREGORY B : A 6-inch SCT like this one would be a nice scope for a beginner. If you want a scope that is simpler to operate and great for a beginner, I suggest an 8 to 10-inch Dobsonian reflector telescope. You would have to learn to search, find, and track your objects manually, but you would learn your way around the night sky very well and see some wonderful sights. However, stargazing with a Dob is like that old joke about "How do you get the Carnegie Hall?" Answer, "Practice, Practice, Practice!" Don't give up. The rewards are worth it. On the other hand, this SCT with a GOTO mount would let you find and track objects automatically and even let you do some astrophotography if you're so inclined. You would have to learn how to polar align the scope which requires some finesse and patience.JEFFERY S : A 6" scope doesn't give huge planetary views out of the box, The field of view is just right for viewing a full moon or the full solar disc with proper filtration. Additional image size can be obtained with the use of a Barlow attachment. Barlows are available up to 5X magnification. This is an "adequate" scope for viewing but the diameter of the optical tube is the limit for light gathering ability, an 8" would better, and a 10-12 inch even better. If you are looking for a telescope for photographing celestial objects additional equipment will be needed, such as a scope with a Equatorial Mount for tracking and keeping the camera from "rotating" while exposing. The Alt/azimuth Mount is inadequate for photography use.EDWARD B : Yes it is very good but I did have to buy a new 1.25" Mirror Diagonal the one that came with it would not focus I think it was a blem. Excellent quality, well made, I like it. Good luckADAM B : I have been able to see rings around Saturn. DENISE W : You will see dots. To see planets better, start with the biggest dobsonian you can afford. Join an astronomy forum and read up on beginner options. Lots of pros and cons to all types of telescopes. It gets complicated, so try not to get overwhelmed. But by far, the biggest bang for your buck for seeing objects larger will be a dobsonian.CLIFF P : Just looked at Saturn Saturday night, was able to see the rings and Cassanies division quite well. Also saw many small craters on the moon, it works excellently.WILLIAM K : this telescope will certainly show planets. they will not be dots. the amount of detail you will see depends on the size of the telescope. you can raise magnification on any scope to high levels for planets because they are bright but the quality of the mount becomes more important then.GILBERT L : The larger the diameter the larger the magnification as long as you use a decent eye piece. the 6" has a focal distance of 1500 mm. Divide that by the eyepiece you get(in general a 25 mm) you get a magnitude of 60X. The smaller the diameter of the eyepiece, the larger the magnification, up to a point where the image gets blurry. You should be able to see plenty of objects in the sky. You will see easily Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, and even Venus, but she will be small, and galaxies, messier objects. The moon will be amazing in details. If the 6" fits in the budget, buy it, but again, larger is better. I got an 8", and I am looking to buy a 12" or 14 " one of these years :)DANIEL E : At FL 1500 the C6 would be an OK planetary scope. You will see detail in Jupiter. I believe I see detail in Saturn at less Focal Length. Mars is very small not sure how much you could see. In my C8, I have never really seen much (FL 2032). Although I never viewed at optical conditions either. I haven't really viewed other planets. The moon of course will be very nice. Hope this helps.RANDY P : With any telescope over 30X you will see planets, Jupiter and Saturn are wonderful objects to view.. With the eyepiece of 20mm you should have good magnification and next year with Mars at close approach will also be a good sight. Saturn at this time is the only planet that is visible in the evening as Venus and Jupiter are coming into conjunction with the sun.. Look low in the NW after sunset and see Venus, Jupiter and Mercury. Galaxies are still fuzzes, some of the Messer objects would be a fine view. The biggest problem I have had with my scope ( 11") is its size and weight. Getting it balanced, with the 6" you should not have this problem.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?YAZEN A : Had it before :)CATHY H : recommended by coachTerry H : Because hopefully they will receive it in a few days like they said and then it can be shipped to me fairly soon.SHANE G : All good reviews, all the features im looking for

GREAT MOUNT FOR VISUAL OR IMAGING USE!

I purchased 3 AVX mounts along with several larger for heavier scopes. I needed more counterweights since this will hold a C11" and works well with that mount for visual use. It is superb with an 9.25" either visually or photographically. There is a post on FB SCTs that shows what a C9.25 and the AVX are capable of, suggest you check it out! And it was not the HD EDGE it was the XLT version, loses nothing photographically to the HD...interesting. I put a C9.25 on one of my AVX mounts and the damp time at 427x was only .5 seconds...this is sturdy! Alright, I put the SkySync GPS module on this and others, fabulous addition. A must have in my opinion. I like the AVX over the CGEMs that I have for three reasons, lighter weight but still very capable, the bearings in the DEC axis are sealed while in the CGEM (II) they are open to dust. There is a little friction in the axis that some might find objectionable, not so when loaded with a scope and it means that you can retain balance when switching eyepieces, e.g. a light 1 1/4" to a heavy 2". With the CGEMs it throws the entire balance off. I also added the Polar axis optical finder...it's great. If I set any mount up with a solid level and perfect polar alignment the gotos are perfect if I do a 2 star + a calibration star or two. Overall this mount is superb for imaging right up to a C9.25. Imagers would only want to put an 80mm APO on this but that's untrue. This IS a very capable mount! So, are there any takeaways? Yes...there is no level built into the mount. I made my own, see attached images and it works beautifully. Celestron needs to add a bubble level to the AVX. There are no other faults. The hand controller is more intuitive than the SkyWatcher controller. I have those mounts/controls as well and one must verify the GoTo several times before the scope will actually slew to the object, redundant. If you are in the market for a good mount that has a lot going for it then by all means the AVX is a great mount. Adorama sales are tops in the business as well!

Good mount. Beware loose dec port inputs.

Good advanced mount. Easy to use and fairly lightweight for portability, recommend it over the CGEM2 mount for that reason for smaller tubes. Beware though the inputs for the declination motor control to motor are VERY loose. I returned one thinking the motor was faulty but it turns out the input was just loose enough to cut out when turning. Replacement has the same problem but not as bad. Feels odd to stick some tape on such a spendy mount.

Avx to replace Evo

I purchased the Celestron AVX to replace my Celestron evo. So far it is working well. It is helpful to be able to easily polar line. This mount is slightly heavier than the evo mount slightly more work to set it up and more stable.

Tripod with electric drive - lacks appropriate power supply.

Totally frustrated that the power supply for the drive is only designed to be plugged into a automobile cigarette lighter. There was no power brick to plug into line power. Kind of ridiculous. Rest of package was as expected.

AVX Mount minus telescope.

The mount looks really good. However your online advertisement was a little misleading. Your ad still states that you are expecting these kits to come into your warehouse any day now. The same thing it said when I purchased the whole kit in mid march. The telescope is on backorder and from indications in talking with other telescope outlets it could be 2-6 months. So it is very hard to tell you how the mount works when the essential piece of the kit is backordered. It is hard to recommend something that I have not received yet.

Adorama Offers Great Service.

The AVX mount is even more substantial in weight, strength, and stability than I expected. It has plenty of capacity for my 8? SCT along with guide scope and other accessories. I added an extra counterweight for balanced slewing which it does smoothly. Couldn?t be happier with the service from Adorama and the speed at getting the product to me.

I bought it as a replacement for my old C8 to go with a C9.25 SCT, and I love it

By Josef P.

I bought it as a replacement for my old C8 to go with a C9.25 SCT, and I love it. GoTo beats the old system, and I mainly bought this configuration because no component weighs over about 20 pounds, so I can handle it by myself at 75. The second counterweight included by Adorama is needed for the 9.25, because the first one is barely enough for the scope alone without any other gear in the business end. After a few tries, I could take it down and stow everything for storage or travel mostly...

So far, three star alignments center my targets in a 32 or 24 mm eyepiece to, at least, the manual's claimed 10 arc minute accuracy. The optical tube has a 2-1/2 second damp time from a sharp tap despite the tube's great moment arm. Field weight is 75lbs assembled. Tube 19lbs., Mount 16lbs. Tripod 1...

Under the umbrella of mid-level telescopes, the Advanced VX 6" Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope stands out as a game-changer. This telescope, a product of Celestron, offers a plethora of features typically found on high-end German equatorial mounts, but at a fraction of the cost. This makes it an ideal choice for both astroimagers and visual observers seeking a portable yet powerful alternative to the standard reflector or refractor telescopes.

The Advanced VX 6" Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope boasts a 6" optical tube, providing a remarkable 40% more light gathering ability compared to a 5" telescope. Its unique Schmidt-Cassegrain design effectively eliminates chromatic aberration, making it a perfect entry point for those venturing into astroimaging.

The Advanced VX mount is engineered to deliver superior performance, leveraging Celestron's most innovative technologies. These include All-Star Polar Alignment, Celestron PWI telescope control software, SkyAlign, and permanently programmable periodic error correction (PPEC). Whether you're an experienced imager seeking a portable mount for dark sky sites, or a beginner in astroimaging, the Advanced VX is designed to meet your needs and grow with you.

The Advanced VX is the smallest of Celestron's German equatorial mounts, featuring computerized GoTo capability for automatic tracking of celestial objects across the night sky. The mount is equipped with ports for a hand control, an autoguider, and two AUX ports for optional accessories. The NexStar+ hand control provides easy access to all the mount's functions, with automatic slewing and menu descriptions that make mastering this mount a breeze, regardless of your astronomy experience level.

The Advanced VX also features a robust tripod for its class, with 2" diameter steel tripod legs offering an extra-wide stance for enhanced stability. The payload capacity of the Advanced VX is an impressive 30 lbs, providing a sturdy platform for any of the Advanced VX optical tubes, even when used with optional accessories like StarSense AutoAlign, Focus Motor, a finderscope, and a camera.

As of early 2019, Advanced VX mounts now include a dual saddle plate that accommodates both CG-5 and CGE-style dovetail, making it compatible with virtually any optical tube within its weight limit.

The Advanced VX 6" Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope comes with Celestron PWI (CPWI), the most advanced astronomy software suite available with any consumer-grade telescope. Developed in collaboration with the engineers at PlaneWave Instruments, CPWI offers an all-in-one solution with features used on observatory-class telescopes.

Your purchase also includes a free download of Celestron's Starry Night Special Edition Software, an advanced tool by Simulation Curriculum that provides detailed information about celestial objects and helps you plan your next observing or imaging session. This software also allows you to control your telescope via computer.

Celestron Advanced VX Features

  • 6" (150mm) f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain includes StarBright XLT coatings for better light transmission
  • Parabolic primary mirror minimizes spherical aberration to produce a better image
  • The most compact and portable of Celestron's German equatorial mounts offers the same rigidity as our larger mounts with minimal flexure and an improved industrial design
  • Holds a maximum instrument capacity of 30 lb
  • Every feature an astroimager wants: PEC, an autoguider port, the ability to image across the meridian, and more
  • NEW dual saddle plate is compatible with the narrow dovetail and larger CGE dovetail
  • Latitude range allows the mount to perform between 7 and 77 Degree latitude
