When I purchased the Firstscope 114, I'll admitt it, I was a little nervous. The scope came in a nicely decorated box and was well packaged and protected. Assembly went smoothly with adequate instructions. Collimation (the normal process of aligning the main mirror to the eyepiece) wasn’t as bad as I’ve experienced with a similar model by a different maker. The night I tested it, there was a power outage – perfect! The 'red dot' finderscope is a briliant device. I was able to find the ring nebula (relatively easy to find target) very quickly and with the included eyepieces I was able to see it in fairly good detail by use of off center viewing. Adjusting to dark longer almost certainly may have helped the relative brightness. Further close inspection of the tripod, tube, mounts and primary and secondary mirrors lead me to this conclusion; for the money, I doubt you’ll find a better first – or even additional, astronomical telescope. Celestron delivers what they claim on this one!

Newtonian reflector telescopes offer a number of excellent features including
• Freedom from most optical aberrations and delivery of very bright images.
• Reasonably compact and portable to focal lengths of 1000mm
• Excellent performance observing faint deep-sky objects such as nebulae, remot e galaxies and star clusters.
• Lowest cost per square inch of aperture due to use of mirrors rather than le nses.
The 114mm (4.5") Newtonian equatorial telescope is the most popular size telescope for the more serious beginning or intermediate level astronomy enthusiast, and for good reason. The large light gathering power of this 4-½" telescope makes it ideal for deep-sky observation of galaxies, star clusters and nebulae, as well as lunar and planetary observing. This makes for a very useful and versatile instrument that can take an observer from the very first time looking through a telescope's eyepiece, through years of observing interesting subjects near and far in the night sky.
Firstscope 114EQ
A high quality, economical telescope with superb optical systems housed in a glossy black metal tube. The equatorial mounts are quite stable, with setting circles and slow motion controls on both axes for easy, smooth tracking. Strict adherence to Celestron's tough quality standards for manufacturing, assembly and testing ensures that each telescope performs well.
