Questions & Answers

Warren A : Why can't you just turn off the motor drive then use the RA slow motion cable then turn it back on when you are done?JIM M : You will damage the internal gear train of the drive system if you try to turn the right ascension slow motion mThe instructions you got wre not wrong.anually. YOu will be ushing through the entire system probably wrecking it. Simple loosen the set screw so the motor is disengaged. Then se the manual slow motion.TELLE T : Hi, you would have to loosen the set screws that attach the motor to the RA shaft then the slow motion cable would turn freely. Then tighten everything back up after adjusting. Great idea you have if you could find thumb screws to replace the "allen" type set screws.
DAVID B : What is the r/a shaft diameter that the 93514 motor drive needs for attachment? I would be using an Orion equatorial mount with an r/a shaft diameter of 7.5mm. ThanksIAN F : My advise would be to ask Celestron Support they are most helpfulNORTH STAR S : the celestion motor comes with a thumb screw complink that should fit on the orion 7.5mm shaft, peterSAIED M : Hi, The RA shaft maximum diameter that can work is 6mm per my measurement. I used this RA drive on equatorial EQ1, EQ2 and CG4. Regards.RICHARD T : david, the drive, if I remember correctly came with a flex coupling with set type screws, if necessary you can drill out the coupling so it fits the required shaft diameter, I had to do this with one of the mounts I used it on, I purchased two for different telescopes and had no issues. the drive works great and is very reasonably priced. I'm sure you will get it to work for you. good luck, hope this was helpful!
JAMES G : I recently bought an AstroMaster 114 EQ Newtonian The CG-2 equatorial mount has two R A shafts, one on either side of the mount. I connected the 93514 Motor Drive to one shaft. If I connect the Slow Motion Cable to the other shaft will tumning that cable damage the Motor Drive? I have read and re-read the AstroMaster Instruction manual, the (downloaded) motor drive manual and the Knowledgebase Nowhere do I find where I CAN or CAN’T use the RA. Slow Motion Cable with the motor drive attachedCOREY M : The motor has a small plastic coupler inside that snaps real easy. When you want to turn the slow motion cable, you have to disconnect the motor from the R.A. shaft by loosening the thumb screw. Celestron should do a better job pointing this out as several people have broken theres. Hope this helps. CoreyWILLIAM G : Yes, it could damage the drive because you will be forcing the gears of the motor. However it is not needed anyway because there is a speed adjustment on the clock drive itself.HENRY B : You cannot turn the cable while the motor is connected. The reason is that there is not an internal slip clutch in the motor. If you try to turn the shaft you will just be fighting again the motor drive. Most likely the slow motion cable will slip on the shaft where it is clamped. However you will likely eventually damage the motor. One option is that you can loosen the set screw that locks it to the shaft then use the slow motion cable to turn the shaft then reclamp it.NELSON A : If you want to use the RA Slow motion cable, you have to loosen the flexible coupling in the motor side. You cannot use both simultaneously. You only use the motor drive once you get the object in the sky focus and track it.

Celestron RA drive tracking motor

This odes exactly what it is supposed to do. While not the best solution for RA tracking, the fact that the speed is adjustable allows you to set it for sidereal, but also to track the Moon, just by adjusting the speed. This is not a replacement for true RA motor drive tracking, but for the price it is a very inexpensive alternative that even works on my Vixen GP which is a bigger mount than what it was designed for.

celestron right ascension drive

When I was young 50 years ago a drive this accurate for this money was only a dream. It is not for dead serious astrophotography but it is a good unit to get going., I use mine all the time--an infinitely variable drive for what 50 bucks or so---come on.

Highly adaptable!

I bought this as an experiment. The mother board on my c8+ went belly up and couldn't find a replacement. I unsoldered the motor from the circuit board and soldered on leads to a small female jack, wired it to the c8+ drive motor and was back online. I'm looking for a larger knob for finer control, but that's my only complaint. If you want an external power supply buy a 12v to 9v power adapter for (of all things) a portable Medela brand breast pump. Works great.

Depends on what you do with it

I purchased this motor drive to attach to an old Tasco equitorial mount tripod that I had mounted a 'Barn Door Sky Tracker' to. My purpose was to use this motor to drive the RA gears on the old mount so I could take long photographic exposures of night sky objects using long focal length lenses...something around 105mm upwards to 300mm. Had to drill a couple of mounting holes to adapt it. The EQ mount uses a 100 tooth worm gear. Initial trials were disappointing until I realized I was running the motor too fast. After a few speed adjustments and experiments I found the right combination of motor speed to use with the 100 tooth gear and the mount tracked very nicely. The main problem I have is that the setup is entirely dependent on how accurately you align the EQ mount to the NCP. It must be aligned very closely. Also, the motor needs to be readjusted from time to time depending on where you point the camera. Overall, the motor worked fine if not a bit finicky at times, but that was for astrophotography purposes on an EQ mount it was not designed for. For simple tracking of objects across the sky for viewing thru a telescope, this motor is a very nice addition at not too much cost.

excellant product would recommend highly

I use this for astrophoto shooting, motor seems very strong, battery use seems good as advertised, which really surprised me after reading some comments from others on other sites. This works good in cold climate and would recommend to anyone useing a powerseeker scope
