Questions & Answers

Shopper : is this telescope good for looking at galaxies and nebula? even below 12 magnitude?DAVID M : For deep sky (galaxies and nebulae), you can see a little with this, but the 5Se would be better, because it has a lower F ratio. In other words, a little bit brighter image for lower power, which is what you need.ANDREW R : While useful in viewing local planetary bodies and some brighter stars, viewing deep sky objects will likely be less than optimal. The small aperture of this scope simply does not provide enough light gathering ability. I would recommend a scope with an aperture of 6" or better.
Shopper : I noticed the highest magnification of this telescope is 213x. if I were to use a 6mm eyepiece with a 2x barlow to look at Jupiter or Saturn, would the image be blurry? even if I use filters?MAXIM F : Im sorry i cant help with this one. It was a gift and im an astronomical novice. MARVIN S : It would definitely be a poor quality image.GORDON G : This scope has a 1250 mm focal length (f/14). The magnification with a 6 mm eyepiece (without the Barlow) is 1250/6 = 208. The maximum magnification in the spec is 213, which is 60 times the diameter of the objective in inches (90 mm = 3.67 inches). The "60 x diameter in inches" rule is a commonly-used standard for maximum magnification under the best possible "seeing" condition. So without a Barlow, you're essentially at the magnification limit. Using the Barlow effectively doubles the focal length of the telescope, so with the Barlow and your 6 mm eyepiece, you're at 416 power, which is way over the max magnification limit. What does this mean to you practically? Even at 208 power, you will be looking at a pretty blurry image unless the seeing conditions are absolutely perfect. So forget about the Barlow. In my experience, under typical conditions, you won't want to look at anything using more than 30 x aperture, which is about a 12 mm eyepiece. Hope that helps.
Shopper : I did my research on this telescope. its focal length is 14 which I know will not be great for deep sky objects. however, the limited stellar magnitude it can see up to is a magnitude of 12. I am quite confused... is this good for deep sky object observation yes or no? :/THOMAS S : I'm no expert, but I don't think this telescope has a wide enough aperture to do any serious deep sky looking. It's not as wide as the 4.5" newtonian I used to have. That said, it's a great telescope. I'm very happy with it. I mainly use it to look at the planets and some of the basic objects, like the andromeda galaxy, orion nebula, etc. If I weren't in a city, I'd probably be able to see quite a bit more. But it's no light bucket, so if you're primarily looking for a deep-deep sky scope that's gonna pick up a ton of galaxies or something, you probably gotta go quite a bit bigger. The computerized mount sometimes takes a few tries to align, but once you're set up it works like a charm.

Amazing telescope!

As a starter telescope, it is way better than what I expected to arrive. My only "issue" would be that the telescope does not rotate as quickly as I'd like even at max speed but aside from that it works great! Definitely worth the buy

Celestron

Ordered my telescope which was on back order but I got it sooner than I thought I would. Set up was easy and I love searching the stars.

Great Little Scope

I recommend the scope for lunar and planetary photography. For those who are comfortable taking longer exposures, it is acceptable for deep space as well.

Alignment

This scope requires 3 stars to align for the computer to work. The telescope must be level. I have had this scope about 3 yrs now and I still have not been able to balance this scope. Other then what I have said, The optics are good for a beginner.

Great Beginner Telescope

This is my first telescope and I am very pleased with it. The clarity is amazing and when dialed in correctly will follow an object through the sky the entire night. Of course I'm usually bouncing around and checking out several sights so I don't zero in on just one thing for long periods of time. But you can return to an object with ease which I have done many times. Honestly, this telescope has not disappointed at all; it's easy to transport, easy to set up and easy to use. Hope you enjoy!

Good beginning telescope

Purchased additional camera mount but too much wobble when pressing shutter button. Able to view Saturn and rings with 15MM lens. Starfinder lens takes getting used to but must be aligned properly to work correctly. Good beginner scope!

Great But sightscope seems poorly made

I use the scope to watch the space station and the moon. This is my first telescope, and other than the sightscope giving me a feeling it has a short, its wonderful. I will add The software provided seems old and feel the instruction book could use a major overhaul. It would be nice if the cord to update the Nextar firmware was provided instead of being an antiquated extra part. This is my first telescope EVER and well, it doesn't just come out of the box ready to go. Overall, a good buy, BUT again more information should be included.

What a great buy

This is a fantastic deal for a refractor telescope. This is my 6th telescope. I have newts and schmits. My best schmit is a c8in and nwt is a 12in. This is my first refractor. I always wanted one but cost for aperture was was too expensive. The slt 102 seemed worth a try. I am so happy I did. I wanted a good grab and go and this is it. I already had a good 2in diagonal and put that in it right away. So i'm not gonna trash the 1.25 that comes with scope.I read bad comments about the star finder scope and have to say maybe these people got a different finder scope. I love mine. Works great! For twice the money you can't do better!

GoTo is not perfect but gets me close. Wish I could afford a bigger telescope but I think this is a good choice for the price.

Perfect telescope for anyone

This is a fantastic telescope for a beginner or experienced astronomer. By upgrading the eyepieces and diagonal you'll get a high quality observing instrument. Beginners will have a small learning curve but once you understand the controls you'll be able to tour the universe. I have many telescopes from Celestron and they're are all large 11". This 102mm is highly portable and is a joy to use. I rate is 5 stars!

Spend a bit more and get something else

SLT handpiece light flickers on and off after a while, making a torch neccessary for using it. View is very limited with supllied eyepieces. Unstable. Hard to focus due to instability. Basically, the SLT doesn't work, we can never find 3 bright stars that it recognises. It is a kids toy product, buy something else!

OMG! I can see Jupiters moons!

I found the scope simple to setup and simple to align and stayed in alignment pretty well. The optics seem to be of good quality for the price and the goto feature is just wonderful. The focus knob is too close to the main eyepiece causing a more unstable image as my finger bumps into into the diagonal after a 1/4 turn. A glow in the dark bubble mount would have been a nice touch as well.
