Questions & Answers

Shopper : Will this filter improve the objects appearance on a 4 inch telescope?RUBIN R : Sorry for the very late answer but it will improve the appearance as long as the eyepiece power is at 250X or greater for seeing nebulas and galaxies.AARON S : It will help with some Nebula but your better bet is to use a Light Pollution Reduction (LPR) filter. Adorama carries those as well. The OIII filter is mainly used for emission nebula (such as M42 in Orion) or Planetary Nebula (Ring Nebula in Lyra). It also only brings out added detail that isn't really seen without it. If you are only doing Visual observing and not Astrophotos, then you may not be able to notice a difference. If you are really looking to improve objects appearance, then you need to increase your aperature (go bigger) to improve light gathering ability and to increase the object brightness.SHANE E : An OIII Filter is a good add-on for a medium-sized scope (such as 4inch). It will enhance the image of many nebulae (as detailed in the Adorama item desc). However, realize it does so by blocking the vast majority of light entering the scope, so it doesn't work as well for dim objects or small aperture scopes. Another option that could be considered is a Ultra High Contrast (UHC) or Light Pollution (LP) filter - these block common Light Pollution such as Sodium Lights but block less of the astronomical light.JOHN D : The Oxygen III filter blocks or diminishes certain bands of light. What this does is help you if you are in a light polluted area. In other words, it will remove the greenish cast created by some street lamps. In deep space this filter will bring out the contrast and even a little color with certain nebulas like the Veil Nebula or the Great North American Nebula. With other types of Nebula that don't reflect/produce light in the narrow green and blue bandwith (wavelengths of 4959 angstroms and 5007 angstroms) the filter will not be effective. You can read up on which nebulas this type of filter works best with and which it will have no effect on and use it accordingly. Now, to answer your question as to whether or not it will improve the view in a 4 inch telescope, the answer will depend upon two things. First, the type of nebula you are viewing as I described above. It doesn't help with galaxies as they don't produce light, but only reflect it and although the filter will add some contrast to bright planets like Jupiter or reduce the brightness of the moon, it does so at the cost of adding a greenish cast. The second factor to consider is how bright the object is you are looking at. If you are trying to view a dim (in magnitude) distant nebula the filter won't help much because filters take away a little light and it will make this type of object a bit dimmer. However, I have noticed that under very dark skies even though the filter does dim the subject, it has helped bring out the contrast on some of these very distant nebulas. You just have to try it with and without the filter to see which ones it helps with. Basically, the short answer to your question is that on certain types of nebulas this filter can dramatically improved the view by bringing out some color and improving contrast. And it definitely helps if you are viewing under light polluted skies.ANDREW R : This filter attaches to 1.25" eyepieces, the diameter of the telescope is not specific. This filter filter isolates just the two doubly-ionized oxygen lines (496 and 501nm lines) emitted by planetary and emission nebulae, while blocking the rest of the overall spectrum of light. The result is extreme contrast between the black sky background and the faint photons of OIII light needed for detailed views of the Veil, Ring, Dumbbell, Crescent and Orion nebulae, among other objects.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?TIMOTHY D : Sale price was great!PHILIPPE F : because I need it ?GREG E : To be able to get better views of deep sky objects by eliminating unwanted light wave lengths.Richard K : To view the vail nebula Among othersJOHN D : This filter helps improve the view, by increasing contrast and evening bringing out some color, in certain types of nebulae. It is also useful for viewing in light polluted areas.

Blocks a lot of light

Using with Orion 8" F3.9 astrophotography telescopes. It blocks a lot of light making your image sometimes hard to spot and focus. You really need a tracking mount to really use this filter to image. takes around6 to 8 minutes of exposure with orion G3 imaging camera to show a usable nebulousity in the Orion nebula so it takes a lot more exposure time to get a good image. Not for viewing galaxies you will sea very little detail this is a nebula filter to block light and give a higher contrast image and it dose a higher contrast image.

Wow! What a view.

Great item when you want to enhance the visible spectrum of a nebula. This filter really enhanced the pictures I got of the M42 and other objects. I would recommend this filter for anyone serious in capturing images of our heavenly objects.

What sets the 1.25" Oxygen III Narrowband Filter apart is its precision-engineered capability to enhance your celestial viewing experience. This high-quality filter meticulously isolates the two doubly-ionized oxygen lines at 496 and 501nm, which are key emissions from planetary and emission nebulae. By doing so, it provides an unparalleled contrast that dramatically distinguishes the deep blackness of the night sky from the delicate photons of OIII light. This results in exceptionally detailed observations of astronomical phenomena such as the Veil, Ring, Dumbbell, Crescent, and the illustrious Orion nebulae.

Crafted by Celestron, a leader in optical innovation, each filter boasts a durable, ultra-hard coating. This advanced vacuum-deposited layer is designed with precision to block the entire visual spectrum ranging from 400 to 700 nm. This innovative approach ensures the elimination of unnatural colored halos that often plague bright stars when viewed through less sophisticated OIII filters.

The effectiveness of this filter makes it a versatile tool for astrophotographers and astronomers alike, seeking to capture or observe the intricate details of the cosmos. Whether you're a seasoned professional or an enthusiastic amateur, the 1.25" Oxygen III Narrowband Filter is an essential addition to your astronomical equipment, enabling you to explore the universe with clarity and precision.
