The newest portable audio equipment is smaller and packs a denser collection of I/O ports than just a few years ago. The attached photo of the 1"x3" rear panel is an example: a new portable preamp/mixer I use. You will notice that all XLR ports on the panel are Mini-XLR size, TA3, and all are Male. There's no space on many of these panels to have a typical cable release lever. The Cable Techniques cables used here have a standard Mini-Female connector and are just short enough to clear space around the rear panel to allow access for all ports. The full sized XLR3-Female on the far end allows attachment of standard XLR3 cables or other equipment to extend to the mics and other connections. The second photo shows a typical stereo working connections setup.
