Q&A

Questions & Answers

Shopper : How fluid is this head?BARRY L : The head is very fluid. You could do much worse. The locking mechanism for the tripod's quick-plate is straight up awful though. I've used this tripod three times on-set in the couple months I've had the tripod. Twice, the tightening knobs have, somehow, tightened themselves so completely that we've had to pull out vice-grips to get them loose. This had a predictable effect on the plastic, in addition to the 15 or so minutes we were delayed, with actors standing around staring at two grown men trying to un-tighten a thing. The third time I used it (two days ago), the mechanism just totally gave out. The quick-plate will now not lock at all and the gear that's supposed to allow the quick-plate to dolly a little and is supposed to keep the quick-plate locked in place once the knobs have been tightened has fallen into the housing and makes no contact at all with the quick-plate. The quick-plate simply hangs there and the only reason it doesn't fall completely off the tripod, dumping my company's brand new C100 and it's associated optics and rigging several feet to the floor is because of the fail-safe all tripods are built with nowdays and because I have pretty quick reflexes for an old guy. Not good for the ol' ticker, let me tell ya. Unless they've addressed this issue, my recommendation for this product is a big, fat, NO. The safety of your gear isn't worth the fluidity of the head.
DAVID B : Does this have a detachable plate?MICHAEL B : Yes and I have had no issues with adjusting the plate for balance, locking in place, unlocking or removing. As noted in another answer that may be an issue but I suspect it may be with heavier rigs where the camera/plate once secure are moving enough (the lock and adjustment knob are on same threaded assembly) in the plane counter to the locking knob and thus overtightening. An additional note it also has a safety catch so you wont accidentally have the plate/camera fall off the head.GREGORY B : Wrong product. Don't know about this one.GREGORY B : Yes, the plate is detachableMICHAEL S : Yes it does.

heavy well made but..

This is a decent well made tripod but....The pan and tilt are not matched in pressure requirements, Movements are very smooth as is expected on a big head but not being able to match tension on both planes is really problematic.....it will pan way too easily requiring a very light touch and tilt stiffly requiring a heavy hand... the pan tension is not adjustable ( see note) and can only be locked in place. but the tilt is (can only be made stiffer from what it already is). The stiff tilt is not an issue and expected as you are having to overcome the counter balance mechanism. As mentioned It does have a tilt counter balance (it's preset around 3.5 lbs) and will work great with a 4+ lb rig, anything less you will be forced to hold in position or it will return to horizontal by its self. It also includes a slide head with safety catch so you can get the right balance on the tilt and not worry about your rig falling off.. My Sony NEX-50U even though full size barely makes the minimum weight... Note: I would have returned this item but figured out pan tension can be adjusted by dissembling the head and removing shims to increase resistance....it's still a fixed tension but at least now it's close enough to the tilt to be usable.

Nice tripod, but fragile

This tripod is tall enough for tall people to use without crouching over, and has a nice smooth head suitable for video or still work. However, the thin wall lightweight magnesium head coupling can crack internally, allowing the head (and your camera) to fall off unexpectedly. Contacting the company for refund/repair results in silence.
