Questions & Answers

David D : How many images allowed on a strip? Looks like maybe only 5. What if strips have 6?NEIL J M : This negative carrier provides six-frames of coverage as well as exposing the sprocket holes. The best negative carrier I've ever used.MARK J : It holds 6 frames. It works best with a full load, so to speak, as fewer than 6 are hard to hold down especially if your negatives aren't flat. Some film has curvier negatives than others.
Phil F : Will this item fit the Canoscan 9950F scanner( which makes great 35mm scans)?KURT W : I myself have an Epson, but I asked a photo friend who has the 9000F and reports it works fine--be mindful that you need to put the mask in the negative scan area and away from the edges--I also 'square it up' using the mask provided by the scanner, reducing the need to straighten afterwards.TRAVIS J : it fits any scanner. I couldn't find a holder for an Epson I bought of ebay so I just bought this. It's not worth using over a regular scanning mask though (which can usually scan 2 strips at once) unless you're scanning panorama or sprockets (à la sprocket rocket or black bird fly)DARRELL B : Yes it will work with 9950F, you will need to turn "Thumbnail view" off and set frames manually. We do have instruction sheets for software settings if needed.GENE C : It's meant for laying on top of a flatbed scanner, so in that case the size doesn't matter.ANDREW R : I believe that this will work in the Canoscan 9950F, however the manufacturer does not indicate specific scanner model compatibility.
Shopper : I have a canon g5320 all in one.....(dumb question) can I use this to scan 35mm to my PC (don't get mad) if not what scanner do you recommend ?....PHIL F : I bought this film holder to use with my Canoscan 9950F and old Instamatic c126 cartridge film from the 1970s. It works fine, but I’ve made a mask that works even better--card stock cut with a razor knife (2 identical pieces) that fit in the larger film holders supplied with the 9950F. The LIZA will hold 35mm very firmly. The center handle is used to flatten the film while you close down the top frame. Then the handle is removed, so the holder is quite flat and will fit probably any flatbed scanner. I believe your G5320 is a Canon all-in-one printer/copier/scanner. It’s optical resolution is good enough for 35mm unless you want to make 8x10 enlargements. For that you need 4800dpi or greater. You might be better off with a dedicated film scanner if you have a lot of film to scan.KURT W : I have the Epson V500, and the 35mm DigitaLIZA works just fine, as long as I position the unit within the film scam area. Note that there is a learning curve in getting used to the DigitaLIZA.DARRELL B : For scanning film you will need a "Film Capable" scanner, Canon MG5320 is not. If image quality is important I would not recommend any of "All-in-One" scanners. Go with a name brand dedicated scanner. Plan on spending $200+ for good equipment. Our short list of recommended scanners in order of image quality: 1) Nikon CoolScan – all models: 2) Minolta – only models with Digital ICE (Infrared dust removal) 3) Canon CanoScan 4000F - 35mm & slides only 4) Epson Perfection v700 & v750 - Best flatbed for film, truly in a class by itself, better image quality than most low-end (consumer) film scanners. This scanner is used by a surprisingly large number of professionals and commercial film labs. 5) Canon CanoScan 9000F & 8800F: Epson Perfection v600 - Good image quality on a tight budget. 6) Epson Perfection v500 - Good image quality. 7) Canon CanoScan 5600F - Low cost acceptable image quality. Hope this helps, Darrell FilmScanUSATRAVIS J : there needs to be a light source above the film. mg5320 doesn't have that. I'd recommend the Epson perfection V series. However, if you want to do it on the cheap and have an android phone, you can d/l helmut and use a lightbox, window, or ipad/tablet+waxpaper

Ideal negative carrier

The best part is the simplicity of the product and its well thought out design. The entire length of the negative strip is exposed, no separators for individual frames which favors panoramic images and no need to line up individual frames either as with other negative carriers. Almost the entire negative is visible including the sprockets so you can capture the complete frame. The magnets that hold the negative in place are strong, but a bit of care is still necessary so it stays put while manipulating the carrier since it is gripping a narrow strip of the negative on either edge top and bottom. If you need to digitize negatives, choose this product.

Streamlines scanning and keeps film flat

Tried a few strips of film with various levels of curliness and it kept it quite flat, better than the holder that came with my Epson scanner. Much easier to use than that holder as well as you aren't fighting with the strip to get it to line up, just center and clip. Note, I bought this to start scanning with my camera, it does work with an Epson V600, but you do have to keep it a small distance away from the back otherwise it will flag an error on the scanner. For pixel peepers, you may find it's not at the perfect focusing distance for the scanner, so another consideration.

Works well but film not absolutely flat

It does work, and is especially nice if you want to include more of the film (35mm in my case) in the digital shot. But it doesn’t hold the film as flat as I’d hoped; there is some arching. Perhaps unavoidable.

Pricey, but works as advertised

While the price does seem somewhat steep, the mask holds even my curliest 35mm negatives flat. I have not used it with a dedicated scanner but it works quite well to create DSLR scans. I would recommend this scanning mask as it has made my film workflow much easier and faster (allowing me to scan a roll in a matter of minutes as opposed to an hour+).

Great for Flat Film Strips

If you have any strips that are curled then this product won't do well trying to make them lay flat. I have some expired Gold 200 that's tough and curled so it's very hard to install the strip and scan with this. Used it with some HP5 that was slightly curled and worked good enough. Overall happy with it and would recommend if you are scanning flat strips though, works great.

It just doesn't grip the film

I can't get it to hold the film, let alone hold it flat. The width of the opening is 33mm, which leaves only 1mm on each side of the mask to grip the film edge. And if there's any curl at all to the film, it just doesn't grip. If the opening were, say 28 mm. wide it might grip.

Holds the negatives flat for copying

Excellent. Just what I needed to use with my digital camera to digitize my negatives. It holds them flat to make the copies

Works as I expected it to

I think this holds the negative flatter than the standard epson holder that came with my scanner, and allows me to scan the sprockets (which is why I bought it). It worked with no trouble on my epson v600, just make sure you position around that area the standard holder would position the strip. This will not scan 100% of your film strip because it holds it by the top and bottom, but just barely. It works enough for what I'm using it for. Anyway, I would recommend.

Good negative mask

I use this with an Epson V500 scanner. It is generally easier to use than the mask provided with the scanner. The design allows you to scan the entire film area including sprocket holes if that is what you wish. For this scanner, a minor disadvantage is that you can't just slap it down on the scanner and get everything lined up as you can with the Epson mask. I ended up cutting a cardboard strip the length of the scanning bed and wide enough so that I can put the mask up against the strip and the film will all be underneath the scanning window. You will not be able to scan thumbnails, however--you'll have to block out each frame individually. This makes it slower than using the Epson mask, and the Epson mask also allows you to scan two strips, so keep this in mind. Overall, the Lomo 35mm mask is not as great an improvement over the Epson mask as is the 120 size Lomo mask (the Epson one truly sucks).

Surprisingly great

I wasn't sure how good this would work, but since moving to a DSLR based scanning process, I needed a better scanning mask than the one that came with the scanner I was using. This holds the negatives flat, and grabs them just at the very edges so you can get sprocket holes if you want them. Even with negatives that had significant curling and cupping, this held them flat and enabled quick scanning.
