Review Summary

I purchased this unit as a replacement to a much older Denon receiver. I was weary of buying something refurbished, but the price was right so I took the risk. So glad that I did. I am so happy with this machine. I use it for both movies and listening to music. It does not disappoint. I don't even want to leave the house now.

This is a nice Denon. I got it refurbished for close to 50% MSRP, arrived perfectly new in appearance aside from a tiny scratch next to a screw head where it'll never be seen, as the machine was obviously opened and repaired. The 2022-lineup of X-series AVRs are good. They are versatile, and highly customizable. The Denon Remote app is a must and is great on iPad for digging into all settings very conveniently over the home network. Performance wise, this is capable and had no issues whatsoever running a large assortment of Klipsch towers from their RPII line, and an RC-64iii center for 7. 2. 2 cinematic bliss. Audyssey calibration works very well and then fine tweaks afterwards help dial in your perfect room profile. My only complaints about the AVR itself is that it is a little slow to accept changes made via remote input, the amp's relays can be annoyingly loud while switching outputs from say Atmos to DD, and that it was scratched by the repair team. For this price Dirac should also be included (see: Onkyo) as it'd be nice to freely switch between Audyssey MultiQ XT32 and Dirac Live without having to pay another three or five hundred dollars. Hopefully Denon works out a licensing in the future for us. Suggestion: while I love the classic form factor os all Denon AVRs they really need to add a decent LCD screen to allow more (or less) data to be displayed and color customizations say, all red lettering for least intrusive. Otherwise the build is very high quality.

Electronics seem OK on this refurbished unit. However, the front door panel binds in all its movement and will not shut completely. Since it's the part of the unit everybody sees, I thought Denon would replace/fix the door before selling.

I bought the latest refurbished receiver with the extra discount. It arrived as new, no visible marks or anything missing. Amazing receiver, plenty of power to drive my speakers, and setup was a breeze.

I just received my new receiver and I think it is great. I replaced a much older Denon AVR, and the difference is amazing. When I bought this thing, I knew I had to replace my speakers. To my surprise, it is a whole other world. These speakers never sounded like this. They prove a much richer sound in music, and the surround is so much better. I love this thing! My only negative comes during the setup. I am no stereo aficionado, so understanding how to set up the speaker configuration was a little difficult. I completed it, but I didn't think it was right. I had to spend some time online searching for some knowledge. I was able to get it done, but it would have been nice if it was easier to understand for a novice. Overall, I would buy it again.

I took the advantage of additional 25% discount to purchase the X4800H, a total savings of $1,000 from purchasing new. The receiver I received seems like new; sounds great playing Blu-Ray / Netflix / Apple TV. Very happy on this purchase.

First time purchasing a refurbished Denon. You'd never know it wasn't brand new, from the packaging to the performance. After enabling Dirac, my basement theater has been transformed!

1st higher end receiver I've owned and extremely happy. The main thing I've noticed is how much better my T. V's picture is, also the SVS Ultra Speakers so great with my receiver. I'd recommend to friends and family.

It was the best choice buying it. Some people say its even better than buying a new one !! I believe it.

Best receiver I've owned yet! I've had no HDMI pass-through quirks using multiple inputs, and the sound quality is fantastic for my 7.2.2 setup (using external amps on the subs). Dirac Live makes this AVR just amazing! You'll need a MiniDSP Umik-1, a mic stand for positioning, your laptop, and a Dirac Live Full** license for the 4800. It really is able to bring everything into this cohesive sound stage that is so much better than Audyssey XT32 alone. I used Audyssey to set distances and gains, then Dirac to bring it all together. Wow, it's awesome! I highly recommend!

I've been wanting to get the 4800 for a while now. Adorama made it happen for me. Great price, fast shipping, and top rate service---they were constantly reaching out to make sure everything was right and as I expected--it was and is!????. Excellent unit!!

I shouldn't review this since mine did not work when received, but Adorama keeps sending me emails, so here goes. The receiver has all of the connectivity I wanted, short an HDMI port on the front (really, Denon?). The user interface on the TV looks pretty good, and I liked the guided setup. One thing missing from the guided setup, in my mind, is the opportunity to tell the receiver that you are bi-amping the front speakers. You have to go into the manual setup to do that. Initial boot up is slow, but I'm guessing once it's set up it's a little faster; I never got that far to know. Everything worked on my receiver except the sound. I went through troubleshooting with Denon support, and determined that the receiver was defective. Not sure if it came from the factory that way or if it happened in shipping. The box looked mostly good. I'd have waited until I got my replacement in order to do a better review, but Adorama refunded me instead of sending me a replacement.

Great unit, met my already high expectations. Adorama experience was perfect too, and at the best price. I also bought Klipsch speakers from Adorama a few years ago and had a perfect transaction then.

Excellent made in Japan receiver. Has plenty of power to drive most demanding speakers. 4 subwoofers out and fully 8K, Aura 3D, imax and more. Excellent sound fidelity even at lower volumes and vocals can adjusted.

Upgraded from a Denon 3700 that was a couple of years old. Same solid build quality with a few more frills. The sound quality was marginally better but the picture quality is way better than the 3700. The other reason for upgrading was to use the pre amps for LCR and the 4800 has the ability to use them as pre-outs. The one thing that I found was the subs were calibrated to a higher output compared to the 3700.

I have been using this device for a few months and am very satisfied. Installation and use is not complicated and the quality of the output is very impressive.

So the receiver was already a top notch upgrade, saying you have a nice set of speakers and a quality sources. But Dirac Live (Full Version) is next level, this is your reason to upgrade to the AVR-X4800H. It makes such a cohesive and balanced bubble of sound after properly* configuring Dirac (make sure to watch a few YouTube videos). Save the default results as flat, and then create a movie and music curve the way you want it to sound. Once you have it how you think* you want it, upload it to the AVR and take it for a spin. Dirac has finally freed Denon AVR's into something exceptional, not just great. JUST FYI: You'll need a MiniDSP Umik-1 (or version 2, but not necessary), the curve text file from MiniDSP (90 degree version), a microphone stand to place the mic as instructed, the full Dirac license, your laptop annnd everyone out of the room (as close to absolute silence as possible). Watch some videos on setting up Dirac 3 so that you understand the initial settings etc. After each position is completed, hold on to your hats! You may need to adjust volumes here and there afterward, but you will notice that, wow, this thing sounds WAY better than Audyssey on its very best day in a perfect world with the Apps. Denon, thank you for adding Direc Live 3, now can we have Dirac Bass Management and Dirac ART (Active Room Treatment)? Unstoppable? Thank you in advance.

I'm coming from the avr3600h. Was excited about the 4 subs option. After I got it all hooked up there was really loud buzzing from my rear Dolby speakers from the pre amp. I changed to rear surround using different set of pre amp. Still buzzing. Then used my old Denon 3600 and used the front speakers pre amps. And I made loud popping crackling sounds. Of course it the weekend so I'll try to contact customer service Monday and send it back. Very disappointing. Had high hopes. But the sound on all other channels was great. Just those preamps not working.

--Had this receiver for a few days and overall very happy. I've got PSA speakers/subs with Klipsch Atmos and an Emotivia amplifier with a power conditioner --The Audyssey seems way better than MCACC from pioneer which a much better microphone provided (with a super cute cardboard tripod to emulate ear height). Still bought the UMIK-1 for when the unit has Dirac. Calibrating takes ~20-30 minutes as there are 8 positions to calibrate. audyssey calibration). --The multi zone is relatively good - though zone 3 matches zone 1 output. It took a bit to realize that z2/z3 had to be turned on, which can be done from the remote, but I ended up using the buttons on the unit making it a hassle to go between rooms to see if the signal was working. It's a bit strange that Z3 doesn't send audio over HDMI, but that looks to be expected. Having Zone speakers powered by the amp is cool but our satellite tvs don't have their own amps so would've preferred audio over all 3 HDMIs but realize that's likely a hardware limitation. Attempted to add a signal reducer but for an old 1080p tv but couldn't get it to sync. Fortunately the new TV replaced a different 4k/HDR so theoretically just need --The biggest problem at the moment is the unit randomly freezes which causes the TV to say there's no input source and the remote/buttons/power of the unit become unresponsive with the only resolution being to unplug the unit. In the couple days it's frozen ~6 times to the point that we've installed an alexa switch to reboot the receiver so we don't have to continually go behind the unit to un/replug. --The system has less amp activation noises than the old pioneer (the loud click that happens when an audio source needs to be re-established/amp turned off/on). Small peeve; the unit just randomly updated while swapping sources instead of waiting for downtime etc. --Of note for any new users, the on screen dialogue when setting up HDMI asks if your source is 8k (presumably so it can activate "high data mode") but its secretly asking if you need to use the 40gbps+ HDMI connection - 8k at 60hz or 4k at 120hz. Took a bit of root causing to figure out that was why the PS5 couldn't 120hz through the receiver. --Harmony remote doesn't have the model but loading a 3800 works well enough as long as you understand you're sending 3800 signals to 4800 unit (input names are different, some commands aren't available or just differently labeled, etc) but overall works with the harmony remote. --The setup was quite smooth though as with most auto calibrations there was room to fix the Atmos crossover frequencies and I'm not convinced it knows how to handle bass though I think most high end sub woofer users have that expectation from all auto calibrators. --The remote is a typical AVR remote, just wish there was some forward movement. Not a remote you ever really want to touch as it's very large and doesn't seem to have a good IR transmitter so very sensitive to LOS. --Will probably have to return the unit for the freezing but will give a few more days to determine frequency. --If you're on a 120hz VRR HDR 4K source the onscreen menu starts blacking out every few seconds, better to just change your input before using the relatively snappy software. --Z3 being a 1080p display will cause any main unit 4k/8k signals to downscale --Not a receiver issue per say, but ordered a unit from best buy that didn't show up on expected date or a week after so had to cancel order and order from a different source (in my case amazon) -------Overall 3/5, though the lost points are mainly from the unit freezing (likely a hardware defect), clunkiness of the remote, and the very pathetic helos app that the unit wants to rely on. Fortunately, a chromecast can be used and is worlds better. The sound is quite good and the unit as a whole for HDMI sources is working wonderfully (unlike a 5 year old Pioneer on a spanking new Samsung tv). If not for the freezing I'd say 5/5 as the other items are very minor nuisances. Not looking forward to the transition time or having to set the whole thing again after two expensive return trips. Unit fixed all of the compatibility problems (which cost $600 to just bandaid) from using the pioneer on a relatively finicky S95B

So the AVR-X4800h is really everything most people could possibly need for excellent and engaging sound at home. If you can swing the price, it's amazing! Just waiting for Direc Live to release in March of '23 lol. Now let me tell you what you need to know about owning this thing. You need great sounding speakers that will probably cost quite a bit more than this (5.1.4 for atmos is my setup), high quality speaker wire and banana plugs, high quality HDMI cables and to do a little research on operating it. Until Direc Live is released you'll be using Audyssey, which is good but with some limitations. You'll need the Audyssey app on a large phone screen or tablet. Set up the speakers, turn off midrange compensation, cap the Eq to 300 hz on each speaker, turn off all the extra junk and eq. After you upload your settings to the receiver, go into the receiver settings menu and make sure the volumes actually match and sound good, I usually bump all of them up from default settings that Audyssey selects during setup. Now you need quality sources right? Apple TV 4K, Xbox Series X (Purchase the Atmos App), PC with HDMI, and I'm sure the PS5 is good, just not my cup of tea. If you have a Blu Ray player, find some atmos content. I wouldn't recommend using "smart TV" apps and arc back to the receiver, you don't need that nonsense laggy TV stuff, just get an Apple TV and everything will be seamless (not even an Apple fan, but it's the best streaming device out by far). I am coming from a X3600h and I can say with confidence that now is a good time to make an upgrade. This one is actually made in Japan, not exactly common these days. If you're a Marantz fan it's equivalent to a Cinema 40, except about 1k less lol. Most people that write bad reviews either don't bother to look into what they are buying, how to use it, or went cheap on the stuff you need to let this thing shine such as: speakers, sub, wiring etc. This is an amazing and sophisticated sound computer essentially, a little steep on price but should last you a long long time.
