Questions & Answers

Shopper : What kind of camera do you need to attach it to for field photos ?BRETT W : This printer does not directly attach to a camera.WILLIAM M : I was unaware a camera could be connected directly to the printer. I use the Nikon D800 and printer connected directly to my laptopARTISTIC C : This printer in not a Stand-Alon Station. It only connects via USB to a computer. Which means, it wouldn't matter what camera you use, once you have the photos in your computer (windows or mac).BOBBY E : I know people that use a old D70 & D90 Nikon, but a good quality len and lighting makes al the different.DALE W : If i am understanding your question correctly, you can not hook a camera straight up to the printer. You must have the files on a computer and the computer hooked up the to the printer. There is no way to view the photos on the printer, it does not have a monitor...it does one function and does it well... it prints fast excellent photos. I wouldn't trade mine for the worldGUDMUND I : My DNP printer actually never worked, but based on other printers, I think any camera will work for any types of photos.JASON D : You can't print directly from camera; you have to print from computer. If you are on Mac platform they do have updated drivers for the newest OS versionsALEX C : Attach it to your computer. Use any camera. Not designed for direct attachment to camera.AYAZ J : The camera doesn't matter..... It just needs to be a camera that takes quality pictures. You will need some software that can print to the printer. I tether capture my images with a Nikon D4 straight into Lightroom and then print from Lightroom. You could print from Picasa. Print from iPhoto. Print from any picture management software.
Shay K : How do you transfer photos from camera to this printer without using SD Card? Is there a transmitter that can be purchased?DARRYL H : From what I saw on YouTube when reviewing and before buying this printer, the printer doesn't include a USB style Picbridge camera-to-printer port. I don't use my printer as a w-ifi printer, but I will look into a possible wi-fi printing option at a future date. I feel that the traditional computer -to-printer setup and use is more convenient and less complex.LILLIAN W : Q) How do you transfer photos from camera to this printer without using SD Card? Is there a transmitter that can be purchased? A) Comes with camara (cannon)JAMESON A : yes you can transfer by you computer, or used the wireless or bluetooth etc..GEORGE C : the printer is connected to your computer, you can have a transmitter from your camera to the computer.Kelly F : I purchased the dnp rx1 and as far as I know, you need to have it hooked up to a computer. You could wi- fi your pictures from camera to computer for printing. Lightroom 4 has a tether option, though, I have not used it cordless.GARY E S : Hi You can ePrint from most cards, a USB drive or you can print from a printer I use all three depending on the event. Hope that helps Gary snyder
TADD A : Can you print a 4x6 or 5x7 photo on this printer? What about 4 4x6's or 2 5x7's on one sheet?ARCHIE B : The DS80 uses 8" wide roll paper. It cuts at 10" or 12". Depending on which size dye film is loaded, 10 or 12". I don"t think you can print both sizes without changing the dye film. The printer cuts across the width so with 8x10 loaded Lightroom has templates for printing two 5x7 but you will have to trim. You can print 4 4x5s on one 8x10 but you will have to cut the pictures apart. Printing 4 4x6s requires loading the 8x12 dye ribbon. The DS40 uses 6" wide roll paper and with 1/2" spacers on each side will accommodate a 5" wide roll. It cuts 4" from the 6" wide roll, 7" cuts from the 5" wide roll. Again, you can print many different sizes but you will be trimming Or losing print area unless your format calls for wide borders.DALE W : it only has 8x10 or 8x12 paper in it, BUT if you have photo shop, you can get "picture package" plug inn and then you can print numerous size pictures...anything that would fit onto an 8x10. Hope this helpsJAMESON A : yes you can print any of this sizeANDREW R : The manufacturer indicates that this unit is capable of the following sizes: 8 x 4" (203 x 102 mm) 8 x 5" (203 x 127 mm) 8 x 6" (203 x 152 mm) 8" x 8" (203 x 203 mm) 8" x 10" (203 x 254 mm) 8" x 12" (203 x 305 mm)

I would definitely recommend this product.

The paper is light and the finish is smooth. Easy installation is a plus. Photos and graphics come alive and pop to anyone viewing an 8x10 print. It's a wonderful world for me using this product. I converted from printing messy 8-1/2x11 ink jet prints to traditional 8x10 dye sub prints . Keep it going, DNP!

I would definitely recommend this printer for photographers.

Excellent! Size and weight, performance and print quality, DNP support. This printer had my name on and, with the kit, it's worth every penny. Thanks Adorama,.Thanks DNP. Keep up the good work.

great printer

I hate ink jets. They clog, they are temperamental. This printer is everything an Ink jet is not. It's reliable. Its fast. Good thing, because I don't think there are any other dye sub printers out there that print 8x12 edge to edge. Simply beautiful pictures with no fuss.

Great Product

We do a Charity Portrait event every year to give people who couldn't normally afford portraits the chance to get theirs done ,,the people in charge of printing were tired of dealing with standard ink Jet printer problems and said they want to quit doing on site prints ,,I assured them if we could raise money for a DNP printer and media it would take away most of our worries as far as printer errors go ,,we ordered printer and love it the print quality is fantastic

Great Print Quality but Ribbons Are An Issue

Excellent print quality of photos with the DS80, and able to print single 8x10, or multiple smaller sizes per 8x10 size. However, now starting on the third box of the media (two paper rolls and two ribbons) I can say with that it's disappointing that the ribbons run out much faster than the paper. On top of that, On the second box of the media one of the ribbons was defective, creating streaks across the prints. This was a problem because it happened in the middle of an event on the the last ribbon roll I had. Adorana says they'll refund my purchase so I hope that will even the score. This is still a fantastic printer.

Love DNP printers

I use the DS80 (also the DS40) for event printing. They work very well and produce fast and beautiful prints. The ability to stack them saves a lot of space while being able to reload the ink/paper in seconds. Your first print kit pays for the printer easily. If you have the 80&40, the 80 will pay for both at $10 per print. The printers are a compact size but a bit heavy. The tray on the 80 is a little bulky and oddly shaped but I stack it on the bottom. It's no problem to me, I'm just trying to fill this text box. I have had zero problems with these printers. I'm actually going to purchase another 40&80 so I can print 4 sizes at any given time and not have to switch the print kits.

Great Printer (so far)

I bought this printer for event printing but I just got it yesterday. I have set it up and have printed a few test prints which seemed to work well. The printer is very heavy and wished I would have bought the travel case for it. Set up was easier when I watched a youtube clip. This review is targeted more towards Adorama and their methods of packing the product for shipping. The printer itself was packed really well but the rest of the components/wires/disks/paper tray were in an area basically floating around without any bubble wrap or Styrofoam. The install disk was out of it's package full of dust and scratches. Everything has been working so far but it is only the first day. Having this experience makes me a bit nervous about future purchases. As for the printer, I am very excited about using it at my first event this weekend.

Finally a Workout

I finally had the chance to give my three DNP DS80s a workout and I have to be honest, the reliability was amazing. Over the course of one day in six hours we printed over 700 8x10 prints. In that 700, I only saw three that came out with flaws (two if I wasn't so picky). The fans that the prints were distributed to were very, very pleased and we did not get one complaint on print quality (many complements however). Which I have to say is very good because these are some picky fans purchasing very expensive prints. The printers never ceased, never jammed, never did anything adverse, even after all three got knocked off the cart they were on. They were however in Pelican cases so I am sure that helped. I will say I still absolutely hate the paper trays, they are bulky and very often get in the way. They also are a pain to pack because they are so large and do no compact but heck, if all I can complain about is the paper tray, i am very happy. I do also wish the 8x10 paper for these printers was a touch thicker. I would definitely recommend these printers.

So Far So Good

These printers seem to be very nice. I have not had it out in the field but have spent a lot of time with it testing and getting ready for the field. I bought two of these for convention photo ops and it seems like they are going to be great. I have my first field test with them next month. I should be looking at around 1000+ prints over two days, so that will be the real test. Included in the (HUGE) box was the printer, a USB cable, power cord, windows driver discs (NO MAC DRIVERS! Had to get them online), paper tray, instructions, a (very cool) quick reference card, and a cleaning kit (incl alcohol pads, small fine sandpaper, thermal head cleaning pen, etc). It was super simple to set up. Loading the media is easy, straightforward and not tricky in the least. In fact, I was amazed at how very simple it was. The color and gloss amount is great out of the box when printing from photoshop CS5 on my Mac with very little tweaking. I was able to get the settings correct to get an edge to edge print, sized correctly with only a couple tries. A word of note. They are about 40lbs and I would strongly suggest a case of some type. They fit nicely in a Pelican 1550. The waterproof feature of the Pelican is really not needed in most applications but being that they are dustproof as well should pay off nicely as Dye Sub printers certainly don't like dust. For printing I easily recorded an action in photoshop CS5 to batch print to the DNP DS80 and it seems to work amazingly. It averages about 26 seconds for a full color borderless 8x10 and I don't think it has ever taken over 30 seconds to put one out. Full size, uncompressed 300 dpi 8x10 .tifs start printing almost immediately after clicking print, something I was very excited about (my inkjets took forever it seemed). Not a huge fan of the paper tray. The printer needs to be at the very edge of a table or desk to put the paper tray on and let it hang. I would like to have seen one that is more angled. When the printers are stacked, the paper tray has to be removed from the top printer to open and replace media in the lower printer. That could prove to be a bit of a pain when the top printer is printing a batch. All and all, as of now, I am very excited about the DNP DS80 printers and provided they work out in the field, I will be adding more soon!
