Questions & Answers

Dan L : Ken Rockwell highly recommends this tripod. I have come across the reviews of this tripod where purchasers complained about the quality control, workmanship issues etc. What is your response to these claims? Also, where is this tripod made?NOEL E : For once I agree with Ken Rockwell :) So far, this has been a really good tripod for me - no qualityl issues with my particular tripod. Of course, it's not as well made as my friend's Gitzo, but it's pretty darn close for a lot less money.JANET B : I have not used this tripod very often. It does seem to maintain position even when used with my heavy astronomy binoculars. My only complaint is that the legs sink in sand, but with all that what weight, what tripod would not sink in a bit of sand. It also works nicely as a monopod. All of my other tripods were less than $30 each, so this is my first 'pro' quality tripod and my opinion may not be worth that much. It is currently in storage and I cannot get to it to tell you where it was made.MAX H : I have no quality control issues with this tripod (without knowing precisely to what these reviewers are referring). The workmanship is very good in my opinion. This tripod has a very solid and sturdy feel and the adjustment knobs are as good as anyone could expect. I have traveled with this tripod and it's been great. For the money it's a terrific addition to the camera bag. I would absolutely buy it again. If somehow you come across one with "quality control" problems I'm sure Adorama would exchange. Hope this helps.MICHAEL B : I've only used the tripod a few times since purchasing it but have no complaints about workmanship / quality of its important parts. Yes, the foam grips around the upper legs do not feel well-attached and "twist" a bit but the grips are unimportant to me. The locking nuts for the staged tripod legs feel a little flimsy but, once they're locked in and the tripod is in the desired configuration, it's solid. The ball head and locking knobs of the tripod have always worked well and that's what matters to me. In all, a good value for the money in my opinion. Not sure where it is made. Hope this helps a bit.GREGORY C : Given the price, the quality was commensurate. I felt it was quite heavy and of so-so quality. Ended up with a Manfrotto 055X Pro B (aluminum), which I like much better. I can't say for sure where the Dolica is made, but I'd guess China.SAMANTHA T : I bought this tripod back in April, and I love it! I've seen the mixed reviews as well, but I have not had any issues. The locks on the legs work great, and the ball head supports my gripped D700 + various lenses. I only use this in the studio or on mostly even surfaces, so the lack of spikes doesn't bother me.JIM C : There is a lot to like about this tripod. It is stable in moderate wind, it is light and quite easy to set up in a variety of positions. I used it to take 300mm shots of the annual solar eclipse in Nevada this past May, and it worked beautifully, despite winds that gusted to 25 MPH or so. That being said, the "quick-release" plate of this is difficult. It jams when it is in use, and it can be very hard to actually slide into place. This is the only issue I've had with it, but it can be a very big, depending upon how you would use this tripod. I have been happy enough with the positives of this tripod to keep it, but I don't know that I would recommend it to anyone else. To be honest, I really need to look into getting the plate replaced, if that is even possible.ROBERT C : I have bought both the Dolica's Ken Rockwell has mentioned and found them both to be nice and reliable units. The only worry I have had is that in cold weather one of the leg "snaps" on the more inexpensive unit requires more closing pressure than the rest, and I suspect it could eventually fail. So I am being careful about how I snap it closed. The more expensive carbon fiber unit has been perfect. I have several Manfrotto units and find the Dolica's work comparably well at a much lower price. I also have Dolica ND filters and find them to work as well as much more expensive units. My feeling is if you have the $$$ buy known quality such as Manfrotto, but you probably will get good service from the Dolica's.JOHN K : Mine is very nice. It is not really full size check the height without the center post raised. It is very light. The ball head that comes with it is about useless. I replaced it with an Induro bhd0 which I would also rate highly. It is just 43 inches tall. It is ok for my D7000 and a normal lens. With the 70-300 mm vr it is pushing the limit of the tripod. If you only need a small tripod this is good. I would rate the load capacity at 5 lbs. max.RUDY H : I own more than one tripod, and think that this unit represents a very good value. A CF tripod setup can cost fully ten times this much, so perspective is necessary when judging a product like this. My copy has had no problems. I beleive it is made in a factory.KARL G : Excellent tripod-A real steal for the price-I JUST LOVE IT-Very well made!VICTOR R : 1. I think it's excellent value for money. Can't think of any other new carbon tripod at this price level. 2. I did have a small problem with the head - camera would not come out. But I think I wiggled it around a bit and it started working ok. So, yes - issues can be there, but not insurmountable. (that said I had similar problems with a Gitzo head) 2. No idea where made - probably China
Gary H : I just purchased this tripod, and one thing has me stumped: how do I extend the spikes at the end of the legs? The rubber caps do not seem to be removable, and I's not certain how the spikes would lock once extended.CHARLES T : Now that this has come up I cannot answer this question. Just checked and the rubber tips do not come off. Don't believe that there are any spikes.JOHN B : There are no retractable spikes in the feet.Keith W K : I've not really had the opportunity to use my tripod yet, but I don't really think it has spikes. It just looks like it has the rubber feet. I did not see any reference to spikes in the instruction sheet which came with it.ANDREW R : If this unit is like most, you need to twist each foot (like you're screwing in a light-bulb) to expose the spikes. Twist the foot the other direction to cover the spikes again.
Mike M : Is the 60 inch tripod height with or without the centerpost fully extended?JAKUB K : 60 inches is the maximum operational height. It is 47" / 119.38cm with the center column not extended)DAVID C : Answer: 60" With the centerpost extended.JAN T : It's with the center post fully extended.SHANE W : Yes the 60" height is with the center post fully extended. The mounting plate height is 49" to 60" using the center post adjustment. That height is to the plate so with my cannon 60D camera mounted you gain 3 1/2" to 4" to the view finder height and with a large zoom lens mount you gain almost 5" I am Six foot tall and have to extend the center post about 1/2 to be comfortable. The tripod is still steady and I like the head very much. Works very well for the reasonable cost except it tightens up once in a while and you have to loosen it with the adjustment. My wife is 5' 9" and she only raises the center post between 4 and 6 inches and has a very workable height for her. We purchased two of these tripods.WESLEY S : With the legs fully extended and the center post fully extended, 60" is right at the top of the ball part of the ballhead. The base of the QR platform is at about 61.25"Glen H : This tripod is 47" without the center column extended, 60" with the center column at full extension.

Really Nice Tripod

It depends what your shooting... For me it's really good, it's light and steady. I got it on sale so even better. If you want to spend $300 or more then its common senses that you will get a better one, but if your on a budget and you want something good, then get it..

get what you pay for

The ballhead is smooth and stable but the leg twist locks are not. I made sure that it used an arca style universal quick release so that my Kirk L-bracket would fit in it. The problem was that the maximum open dimension is barely (we're taking less than 1/16")too small to accept the bracket, so I can't mount my camera on it in portrait orientation! Also, the second time I slung the case with tripod in it over my shoulder the strap ripped out of seam and the tripod crashed to the pavement. The case looks nice but it's apparently of terribly cheap make.

A nice tripod, but NOT as described

I purchased this tripod specifically for outdoor landscape and wildlife photography. The light weight appealed to me because I often do photoshoots in a wildlife refuge where motorized vehicles are prohibited, so I needes something lightweight to be carried on a mountain bike (along with a Nikon D800 and 28-300mm lens). Frist off, this tripod does NOT support 17 lbs. The BOX says it supports 13 lbs. Second, there are no retractable spikes in the feet. This is a major disappointment for outdoor photography. Beyond that, the tripod appears to me well made and easy to use. It came without any instructions, but aside from spending 30 minutes trying to extend non-existent spikes, no instructions are really needed.

Great tripod for my needs

I have a Panasonic DMC-GF3 and have been using it for landscape, portrait and night shots. I had a cheap tripod from a flee market which used to work fine but with night shots and long zoom lens it's too weak to support even during light wind. I received the Dolica early this week and have been playing with it at home. It performed excellent. Very stable during testing and the ballhead worked great. A great feature is being able to reverse mount the center pole so I can mount the camera upside down for some low ground shots. I was extremely pleased with it. However... The unit that came to me is imperfect. There are overcoated paints in a few area, chipped paints and scratches as well. Also one of the foam grip is damaged when I received it. I'm not sure if it is Dolica's QC failure or if I got the returned-resold unit. The nice folks at Adorama allowed me to ship it back and exchange for another unit. It's still on the way to them by UPS so I'm patiently waiting hoping the replacement unit will be perfect. Other than the little QC issues with my unit I still recommend it to everyone for the usability of it.

Upside down center post

The center post can be removed by unscrewing the bottom, and attached upside-down. This allows the camera to get close as possible to the ground level.

Upside down center post

The center post can be removed by unscrewing the bottom, and attached upside-down. This allows the camera to get close as possible to the ground level.

The Dolica ZX600B300 is a 60" Carbon Fiber Tripod ball head. Carbon fiber is an upgraded material that is known for its lightweightness, resistance to vibration and greater torsional stability compared to aluminum. With a max height of 60", the ZX600B300 is a suitable height for most people. The other unique feature is the Gitzo-style ball head.

The Dolica ZX600B300 ball head design offers a better balance compared to other ball head, thanks to its wide open ball base that offers wider tilt angles and less camera drift angle. The large ball head lock knob is also great for precise camera positioning. Other nice features include bubble level on the ball head and tripod.

Comfort foam grips also make it convenient for handling purposes. 3-angle leg locks allow for multi-angle tripod positioning. Lastly, included with every ZX600B300 is a padded nylon case for storage.
