The most versatile and safest system there is!

I've been successfully using Drobo for almost six years now. I find it to be great for mainly two reasons: you can expand the capacity at any time without interrupting your work for a second and it protects you against any drive failure since you can swap a drive without even turning your Drobo off. No interruptions ever! I started with a 1 TB and two 2 TB drives, by now I have one 2 TB and three 3 TB. Every time I've needed to have more capacity, I simply the lower capacity drive with a higher capacity one, without turning the unit off. Automatically Drobo reconfigures itself without interrupting your work: you continue to have access to your data and write new data to it, while it's reconfiguring itself. Twice I've had drive failure and simply replaced the faulty drive with a new one, without losing a single bit of information! Just great

Only USB 2.0 throughput

After calling Drobo, I loaded two 6 terrabyte drives in the Drobo. That went well. Three items prompt the 1 star review. 1. Windows claims 15.9 TB capacity! It should claim less then 6 TB capacity. Clearly the Drobo firmware doesn't understand the windows interface. This product was released more than a year ago. This should have been fixed long ago. 2. The USB 3.0 specification supports transfer speeds up to 625 MB/s. The Drobo, as configured, supports only USB 2.0 40 MB/s. That is not what I purchased! Other reviewer's have reported drive incompatibility issues. This, again, links to a Drobo firmware or design issue. I see no reason to purchase different drives in the perhaps vain attempt for better throughput. 3. There are many other sour reviews echoing my sentiments. So rather than waste more time and money on a poorly designed device, I'll simply sell it and move on.

Love my Drobo

I have been using a Drobo for years with no problems. I just upgraded to the Gen3 which is much faster. Easy to set-up. Highly recommended.

Expandable Storage Solution A+

I finally got tired of buying expandable drives only to run out of space. Drobo allows you to expand storage space as you need it by adding another drive to the four (4) bay unit. Also automatically uses RAID so if one drive goes bad the other still contains your data. Working great with no problems. I feel I need to mention that your files are written in 'Drobo format' and you cannot read the drive(s) without the Drobo unit. That being said, their extended waranty protection is reasonable once your original waranty has expired. I installed two (2) 3TB drives and still have two (2) drive bays open for future expansion. Overall I would recommend this unit for those of us who need massive storage available as an expansion drive. Great 'Bang for the Buck'.

Wonderful

This product works. It was a diffucult decission since Scott Kelby gave bad marks since he lost his photos due to a failure of his drobo. Understand that Drobo uses a proproitary format for your data, so, if the unit goes bad you are dead in the water. Since drobo offers an extended waranty for a reasonable fee, this should not be a reason to not use this unit. 'Cloud Storage' is going to cost you the same if not more than the extended warenty offered by drobo. So far I'm happy with my purchase - got the rest of the year before I need to purchase the extended warenty.

Love my Drobo

By GARY M.

I have been using a Drobo for years with no problems. I just upgraded to the Gen3 which is much faster. Easy to set-up. Highly recommended.

The Drobo 4-Bay (3-Gen) 3.5" SATA/SSD Enclosure is the latest generation of the award-winning platform that started it all. It holds true to the unique design and simplicity that has made Drobo the best desktop storage solution for storing and protecting all your data. No storage expertise is required to ensure your data is always safe and protected.

Inside every Drobo is the revolutionary BeyondRAID storage technology that protects data against a hard disk crash, yet is simple enough for anyone to use. As long as you have more than a single disk in Drobo, all data on Drobo is safe no matter which hard disk fails. There's no need to worry about anything else.

Time Machine and Drobo: A Perfect Pairing
Apple's Time Machine was designed to make backing up your files simple and painless. Pairing Time Machine with Drobo improves your data protection by ensuring your data is safe in the event of hard drive failure.

Control How Much Storage Time Machine Uses
With Drobo you can easily control the maximum storage space available for Time Machine backups through Drobo Dashboard. When you install a Drobo, Drobo Dashboard prompts to see if you want to create a dedicated storage volume for Time Machine's use, allowing you to set the size of this volume.

Upgrading With the Remarkable Drobo
Drobo takes upgradability to the next level. Not only can you upgrade capacity with no downtime by adding new drives or replacing smaller drives with larger ones, you can seamlessly upgrade to a new Drobo by simply removing the disk pack from your current system and moving it to a new Drobo. Upgrading not only gives you an instant performance boost, but also delivers all the other benefits of the new Drobo.

Power Protecting Your Critical Data
Drobo doesn't just protect you from a drive failure, but also from potential data loss after a power outage. When power spontaneously goes away, Drobo moves any in flight data to onboard flash in your Drobo so it will be protected and moved to your disk drives once power is restored. This ensures your important information is safe and sound. Even better, your battery recharges itself and is designed to last for the life of you Drobo.

Leave Your Limitations Behind. Go BeyondRAID
Drobo's with BeyondRAID are also self-healing and have virtual hot-spares. If a drive happens to fail, Drobo will automatically re-layout the data to return to a protected state without disruption. BeyondRAID along with Smart Volumes deliver next-generation storage technology by bringing together enhanced data protection, reliability, expandability and ease-of-use.
