Excellent product and long-term value

My wife is a professional photographer and needed a redundant place to store her photos. Drobo is perfect. If one of the drives fails, you can easily replace it and nothing's lost. High-capacity drives are so cheap, that this is so much of a better value over the long term than a normal external backup hard drive. So she uses it to store her livelihood. We also use it to store a master iTunes library with many GB of music and movies, not to mention other large data files we may need to store.

Drobo an excelent piece of equipment

I purchased the same unit at a different retailer. Just wanted to say in this review that if you get a chance to purchase this unit, do so because it is worth the time and money. It will not let you down, the performance is excelent, and I am extremely happy that i purchased this. Do yourself a favor and get it.

DROBO Rocks

Bought this after losing 2 hard drives in less than a year. As a professional photographer, I work with thousands of images and most in RAW format, large files. And even though I back up to many sources, this was a really cool way to back up with piece of mind. I currently have four 1TB drives installed and this has worked well for me for about a year and a half. Lose a hard drive? No problem, simply pull out the bad one and install a new one and your information is right there ready to go. It is hot swappable so you do not need to shut it down to change it out. Dont know how it works exactly but it does. Want to upgrade the drives? Just switch them out one at a time and you can in essence double the size of your storage capacity. I started with 500's and went to 1TB.. I liked this so well, I was asked to Beta test the new model and put it through its paces...this is a really cool item if you want great piece of mind...other RAID type systems just did not work that well for me....

The 4-Bay Drobo Robotic Storage Array Enclosure is an innovative external storage solution.   • Scalable Storage Solution: The Drobo offers truly scalable storage. The four-bay enclosure ships without any drives installed, allowing you to customize storage to suit your needs. Start with a drive of any capacity and simply add more as your storage needs increase
  • Intuitive Interface: The enclosure features intuitive LED lights that indicate disk status. Green lets you know that everything is a-ok, yellow indicates that the array is 85% full, while red lets you know that the array is 95% full
  • Data Protection: The Drobo delivers real-time data protection of stored files. The device protects against both drive failure and data corruption. It can even auto-repair data on a crashed hard drive, provided that the drive is replaced by a disk of equal or greater capacity
  • Dual Interface: The Drobo can be connected to a computer via high-speed FireWire-800 or USB 2.0. The FireWire-800 bus is capable of burst speeds of up to 100MB/sec, compared to the 60MB/sec of USB 2.0
