Fine Stuff

I've been a serious shooter since 1953. I did a fair amount of work with lights in the sixties, then went almost exclusively to available light -- mostly street photography. Recently I've been getting back into speedlights in a big way, and Joe's hands-on demos are extremely useful. If you're learning or re-learning artificial lighting you can't afford to be without these disks. Joe knows what he's talking about.

Loads of ideas

I have followed Joe for years and have learned a lot from him about lighting. I took one of his bus tour courses and this DVD is a great resourse that shows you on location lighting set ups for different situations. It also helps you understand the dynamics of lighting.

HIghly Recommended For Any Lighting Buff

This DVD set is a great tutorial/reference/inspiration for lighting with Speedlights/Speedlites and with strobes as well. Joe presents everything in an entertaining and easy to follow way. His use of descriptive language is really great and helps you to understand how and why he makes particular choices about lighting. It bears repeat watching as your knowledge and experience grows. For more experienced shooters, I think it works well as inspiration and refresher. I went to his One Light, Two Light tour and didn't pick this up at the time and regretted it until I finally took the plunge on Adorama. Totally worth it.

GREAT instructional DVD. Worth the cash.

If you are looking for a superb training video on how to use off camera flash units, then this is the DVD for you. Joe is a great teacher and this product is well worth the money. It's also worth checking out David Hobby's Strobist DVD's. Disclaimer: I'm invested in the Nikon CLS system and I attended the Flash Bus tour.

Awesome

I was at the recording of this DVD when the flash bus was in Philly, even made it up on stage! there is so much information in this DVD that even if you attended any of the Flash bus stops you will get to see stuff that you missed or forgot. what a great value, packed full of great content and just as entertaining to watch!

Good purchase

This is a good film with interesting stuff and gives a few good ideas. I'm not convinced about the price compared to the amount of information. Don't get me wrong, I value Joes teachings and expertise but I feel there could have been bit more to it at this price.

The Language of Light DVD Review

Joe McNally is one of the best instructors in the country on off camera lighting techniques and it shows in these DVDs! He walks you through several different lighting setups discussing the intricacies of TTL flash systems taking all of the mystery out of them. Joe is a joy to watch and listen too and even though I'm not an amateur, I still learned quite a few useful tips from this set. Definitely worth the money!

Great lighting reference

Joes does not disappoint with this DVD. Great for learning to do portrait work with off camera flash. Only complaints are that he does not address large groups and his budget for modifiers is much larger than mine.

Fabulous

My photography has taken a quantum leap forward. I had always been resistant to using flash. I understand it now and enjoy it. It has re-energized me and my photography. I photographed my daughter and her fiancée with professional results using Joe's techniques. I refer to it often and pick up new techniques each time. A little pricey but worth every penny.

McNally Rocks!

I love that this video includes very simple lighting set ups and techniques and some very complex ones. I love seeing how McNally works his way through the situation to maximize the impact and I love how he retraces some areas he's covered in the past and covers new ground.

Classroom in a DVD

Good for beginners as much as for young pros -- Joe McNally is a master in making it look easy and imparting his approaches to making a picture work in an uncomplicated way. Easily one of the best photography teachers out there, and one of the best photographers. The DVD covers mostly portrait photography and the use of speedlights in many different settings, like studio, basketball court, shoemaker shop, direct sunlight etc. The only thing a beginner would probably be missing is the classic portrait with one main light, reflector, hair light and background light, which is not covered. But in any case, this DVD set is absolutely worth the money, especially if one already has some basic knowledge of portrait photography and the use of flash, although I think this DVD is a must for even an absolute beginner.

Joe knows lighting?????

You have to appreciate someone who loves their craft so much that they take the time to produce educational products for others. Joe McNally is a master artisan that shows you the simplicity of his efforts. As well as the trials that get him to his incredible photos. I bought this DVD set to help me train my wife to the uses of flash. In reality, I too got the education from Joe!

Any time work shop

This isn't a one time watched DVD. There is so much to learn from it that most won't get it all in one setting. Mr. McNally does a fine job in walking you through several differnt scenarios. May take a couple of run throughs to catch everything, but thats why you buy a DVD.

Thank You Joe McNally

I always learn something when I read one of Joe's books or view his dvds or follow his blog. He and David were AWESOME on the FlashBus Tour. This dvd is another solid addition to his catalogue and although focussed a little more on basics this time, it's excellent and I'm utilizing many of his techniques.

For the past three decades, photographer Joe McNally has been documenting our times on assignment for publications like LIFE, Time, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, and many others. Highly regarded as a master of light, both natural and artificial, Joe continues to create stunning imagery all over the world. Much sought after as a photographer, lecturer, and teacher, Joe educates and inspires shooters of all types--pros, hobbyists and beginners--with The Language of Light.

In this DVD set, Joe shares almost 30 years worth of field knowledge, instruction, and philosophy about using light as a powerful tool of visual communication. He fully explores and explains different lighting techniques, and goes well beyond the "how" all the way through the "why," of using light. Small flash, hard light, soft light, light with color, light in the studio, and light on location are all dissected and explained. You see and hear all about the f-stops, shutter speeds, lenses and light shaping tools, and you are taken further into the reasons why a one lighting approach is better than another for certain scenes, faces or groups. All along the way, Joe offers tips, tricks and solutions that can only be gained from 30 years with a camera to your eye. Sit back, relax and enjoy as this legendary shooter takes you on a fast paced, humorous, and always informative journey about how to speak with light.
