Sharp, portable and cheap

This lens is excellent value. Very sharp at wide open quite f2.8 helps me get better picture in low light condition. The design is robust with metal mount very light weight. I use it for my everyday walk around set up

Research before you shop

I should have gotten the 28mm f/1.8 AF wide angel for better quality and lighting, and not the 28mm f/2.8 AF. Unfortunately, this was a gift. The focus mechanism has problems with crisp shots. I would shop, research and compare before making a purchase.

Must have quality lens at a good price

A fixed focal length lens is always thought to be a better performer for the price than a zoom lens. When shooting indoors this wide angle lens does the job very well. I recomend it highly.

Good for night shooting

I bought this lens for night shooting, and it works. I have tested it in very poor light. It allows me to shoot using hands in night conditions even without IS function. That is great. However, it is not a very wide angle lens. It works as I expected. Thanks Canon!

Not impressed

Just average not really bad but I just couldn't bond with this lens and sent it back. Wasn't particularly sharp and contrast and color were just ok. I have read other reviews that rated this lens good but that wasn't my experience. However it is compact and lightweight.

Great Lens in a Small Package

This is one of my favorite lenses. I don't own any "L" series yet but I don't know how much better you can get for a 28mm on a crop sensor body. This lens gives me consistent undistorted images. I use it for Landscapes, and Large group portraits. Hasn't failed me yet.

Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 AutoFocus Wide Angle

Used this for a few days to shoot some funky portraits and some wide angle for a wedding. The autofocus was super loud (it's not a USM lens so I'm not surprised) and a little slow. If you use it with a good camera, the images are actually pretty sharp. So, if you are on a budget, it's not a bad wide angle, although if you are shooting with an APS-C camera, than you probably should look for an EF-S lens to accomodate the crop factor to get a true wide angle. If you wanna have a backup 28, this is a good choice, otherwise save your money and get a nicer lens that is USM, IS, etc.

Very good "normal" prime for APS-C

Pretty good little lens. It is one of the original Canon primes, released back in 1987. The focal length is perfect for a crop sensor camera. This lens is tiny, light, focuses quickly and accurately. The motor is a bit noisy, but not distracting in normal usage. My only complaint is that it could be a stop faster, but the f1.8 version of this lens is more than double the price. All in all a great purchase and easily matches my 50mm 1.8 in sharpness and picture quality - and it focuses much more accurately. I notice the colors are nice and vibrant from this lens as well.

Great Lens for the Price

Great lens for the price, it's no "L" quality, but the price reflects that. It's a great walk-around lens for a 1.6x digital. It's small and unobtrusive.

Better than zoom lens

I only owned this lens a few months. The auto focus was extremely loud. The sharpness was better than my cheap canon zoom lens, but not even close to the sharpness of my Canon 50mm f1.8 (the best lens for the money) This lens is OK but I wasn't extremely excited about it.

Great lens for the price

Highly portable wide-angle lens with a good price-to-performance ratio. Its light weight of 6.5 oz. (185g) makes it ideal as your standard wide-angle lens. The high-precision aspherical lens minimizes distortion and other aberrations for sharp and high-contrast images.
