I wanted one with an equatorial mount.Robert M : I need a light tripod for visual astronomy. Weight is an issue for me since I have to move my equipment around a lot for open sky. I prefer an equatorial simply because even a very crude alignment will help immensely with manual following of a stellar object.

Rated 5 out of 5

Its really made of steel, decent gearing but the 20 lb rating is more like 10-15

Works well, made of steel, but.... while rated for 20 lbs, my 6" reflector (Meade LX 85) is a little heavy for it at 12 lbs. The RA gearing has a bit of play for the purist but totally usable. The counterweight isnt heavy enough, I had to use a big C clamp attached to the weight to get it closer to balance on the RA axis. I hung a 5 lb exercise weight from the legs to increase stability and reduce vibration. The Az release screw handle gets caught up with the RA control when scope turned for viewing the ecliptic, that has to get replaced with a longer screw. It looks like you could attach the Celestron motor drive for CG3 mount, I am going to try it out. Overall vibrationally sensitive, but any tripod is, I presume until you spend $3000. Good enough to view the Orion Nebula the other night. Way good enough for the moon, especially the craters and mountains along the terminator. Probably better suited for a smaller refractor telescope. I am pushing it: if it breaks, I will get a bigger tripod, not the same one.
