Review Summary

This is the gold standard when it comes to news gathering. Often referred to as "the stick mic", it is more dependable than most employees. It always show up for work and always delivers high quality while being durable enough to survive hurricanes, dust srorms and the ocassional chemical plant explosion. After 20 years in the news business I can honestly say that I would not buy another mic without having this one in my run bag first. I have even dropped it off a bridge in Austin onto IH35 during a liveshot(not on purpose). It was hit, and run over a couple of times before I could retrieve it. It was dented and scratched up but it still worked.

Looking for a rugged field mic? This has been the standard for a long time, and still is. A great deal at a relatively inexpensive price. Essential part of my video kit. Never needs batteries. Add a signalflex 8021 if using a Zoom or similar small recorder for boosting the mics output. Add a wireless mic transmitter to the bottom for getting rid of wires.

It's the Electro-Voice RE50/B, a meticulously engineered, shock-isolated, omnidirectional dynamic microphone, designed to meet the stringent demands of professional applications. This handheld microphone, with its advanced shock-mounting techniques, is specifically tailored for broadcast and sound reinforcement use, making it an ideal choice for reporters, podcasters, and live event professionals.
Every detail of this microphone is designed to minimize mechanical induced noise. Handling noises, clothing rustles, and even cord shocks are effectively isolated from the microphone element, ensuring crystal clear audio capture. This is achieved through the use of a high-mass zinc internal acoustic chamber, shock-mounted within the robust machined aluminum outer casing. This unique design offers an unparalleled degree of isolation for an omnidirectional dynamic microphone, making the RE50/B a standout in its category.
The internal transducer of the RE50/B employs a unique mechanical nesting concept. Each component is nested within another, resulting in a nearly solid structure for the transducer head assembly. This design renders the microphone highly resistant to shock damage, ensuring its durability and longevity.
The diaphragm of the RE50/B is designed to withstand temperature extremes and atmospheric conditions, ensuring consistent performance in diverse environments. A carefully crafted integral windscreen and blast filter provide excellent protection against wind noise, excessive sibilance, and the annoying "p-popping" sounds, enhancing the overall audio quality.
The RE50/B features a resilient grille that retains its shape even under pressure, and a four-stage pop filter that prevents dust and magnetic particles from reaching the diaphragm. Finished in an attractive, non-reflecting, semi-gloss black, the RE50/B is not only a high-performance microphone but also a visually appealing tool for on-camera use.
This package also includes a Rycote square mic flag for reporter mics ranging from 19 to 38mm (0.74-1.49") and a microfiber cloth, adding to the versatility and convenience of this professional-grade microphone. With the Electro-Voice RE50/B, you're investing in high-quality, durable, and professional audio equipment.
