Questions & Answers

Shopper : Will this work on a Sony a55?DAVID J. W : These lenses work Great and will work on any camera that has a built in Pop-up flash! The clear lens takes pictures just like a normal flash does. The tinted lens makes the picture look like an old fashion picture with a hue of a old fashion flash. The lens fits on the Hot Shoe where your electronic flash would go. If you have any problems the staff at Adorama are great and will assist you , all you have to do is ask...Thank you!
Shopper : Does this work with a Nikon D5100?JOHNNY L : not sure i use canon im sure it wouldDENNIS K : shure with any nikon pop upANDREW R : Yes, this unit should work with the Nikon D5100.
DAVE B D : Will this work with the Canon SX30?ANDREW R : Did you mean the SX40 IS? Unfortunately no, it doubtful that this unit will fit properly on the SX40 IS?

Fantastic product at a great price

This product works just as advertised. I now get great portrait shots. I would definitely recommend this to others. Fits my Nikon D90 like a glove.

For low tier DSLR cameras

Purchase this but found it is only for low end DLSR, like canon rebel series flashlight attached with camera.

5D Compatible?

The first camera listed in the "compatible camera" list is the 5D - a camera without a built in flash. I haven't used this, so the compatibility is my only comment. Hope they edit the compatibility list.

The best flash diffuser for small rooms

I own it for about 2 weeks. Tested it briefly with 2 different Nikon cameras (D40x and D7000) and 3 different lenses Nikon 50mm f/1.8G, Nikon Kit lens 18-55mm, and Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4. I got the best results with D40x/50mm combination. The lighting was smooth and perfect: the subject and background were lit equally well. Other combinations were less impressive but I did not play much with adjustments. The thing is: this is an excellent value for money even if you find a single combination that works.

Compact, fits perfectly, does the job

It's a simple device to use - you just slide it over your flash and you're ready to go. It comes with a nifty velveteen carry-on case and works well, as long as you have light-colored walls.

Good cheap alternative

I bought this for my Aunt who is just getting into photography. This is no substitute for a speadlight but it works great for the everyday person.

Would not recommend product - though output was better without this item. Not a true bounce flash.

doesn't work with Sony a55

I wish I could really rate this product, but "universal fit" doesn't include the Sony A55 but I wanted to post something so other Sony users would know. I got it at a good price w/free shipping so will give it to my friend who's a Nikon user rather than send it back. darn, I was exited about using this for still life shots; the search continues.

Superb white balance pitch darkness!

Eliminate direct flash reflection from your buit in flash unit. This device slips into your hot shoe bracket, and with a front mounted mirror, bounces the light UP to diffuse it.

Must have for casual photographer!

This tool is great for someone not looking to invest a ton of money in an expensive flash, but that doesn't like their results from the pop-up flash on their camera. It definitely keeps colors from washing out. If you set your WB to flash-mode images are super (probably too) warm, so I didn't see any need for the "warm" model. Definitely worth the $.

Love it!

Great for those of us that are pigmently challenged (when a traditional flash gives us a harsh glow)!

Bounce Flash

Too large for camera bag. Needs to fold up. Difficult to remove adhesive tape over mirror.

Kobre's lightscoop

Used this product with satisfaction..Read all the instructions and the product performs as directed. The one good thing about digital photography is it allows one to experiment. This device does take the harshness out of the small camera mounted flashes. Over all it's a great addition to your photo gear for the money!

Cool product!

Works great, but when installed it triggers the microswitch on my 60D and turns off my internal flash! I used an exacto knife to trim the right side so it wouldn't trigger the switch. It isn't quite as secure now on the shoe, but it works fine.

Well worth the money!

I use a Nikon D50 with the pop up flash for family gatherings which are usually indoors and almost always lacking in available light. I was not happy with the harshness and short distance that I was getting in my shots. Once I put this my camera all of my shots were lit up nicely, shadow harshness was minimized, and the backgrounds were lit up! I must say that it works as advertised and the camera set-up instructions that come with it are right on for my Nikon. Worth every penny!

once you set up your camera to use the lightscoop indoor flash photography takes on a cleaner, more accurate look. It is bounce flash without all the props or other techniques.

This product works!

If you want beautiful, soft lighting you will love this product. Even in a vertical shot it gives very nice side lighting. With this you get away from the "caught in the headlights" with on camera straight flash.

Works great

I have a Canon EOS Rebel T1i and I love taking pictures of my toddler daughter, but at this age, she is always on the move and it was hard taking pictures with minimal light. Using flash left too hard of a shadow and not using flash would blur my pictures. So with this Lightscoop I can take pictures when there is minimal light and have clear bright pictures. Couple things I have to be aware when using it is, I have to be shooting the pictures straight at my daughter's eye level, instead of at an angle, such as looking down at her in order for it to work properly. I also have to have it zoomed out and physically move forward or backward so that the flash would bounce right above my subject. It take a little bit longer for my camera to focus when I'm using the Lightscoop and my camera tends to be busy for couple seconds right after I take a picture so I can't take pictures back to back. I do think this was a great purchase and it's very easy to use and so simple. I get great pictures because of it. I would definitely recommend this product!

excellent addition to the camera bag

Excellent tool for those times you don't want to use an external flash but don't want the harsh lighting that comes from most on-camera flashes. The lightscoop works great!

Just What I Expected

I got this as an 'in-between' option so that we wouldn't either have the pop-up flash with its harsh shadows, or the external flash with its bounce capability along with its extra bulk and inconvenience when we're just shooting snapshots and such. It works as well as promised to turn your pop-up flash into a bounce flash. I've read reviews questioning its durability (it probably could have been more sturdy, but it's still not what I'd call 'flimsy'), and I do take care to put it in its carrying bag (included) and in a pocket on the camera bag where it won't get crunched, but it's like everything else you've gotten so far for your camera, you take care of it and it'll be there when you need it!

The very least you should have.

For the sake of helpfulness, I will divide this review into 3 important sections: 1) How I use this product: - I use the PK Lightscoop on my Canon Rebel XT or Canon 40D when I do not feel like mounting a 580EX II or because I am letting someone borrow it. I generally use this for indoor photography for fun or general coverage. 2) Things that are great about it: - Considering how terrible pop-up flash is, this device makes ALL the difference indoors. It almost makes you wish that the popup flashes had a vertical swivel that allows you too point it up towards the ceiling. - The light is distributed amazingly well. When I was shooting indoors, my pictures looked almost indistinguishable from that which I took with a 580EX II. - It's lightweight and it slides onto the shoe mount and stays on very securely, plus they give you a carrying pouch. - It is probably the best replacement I've seen for a speedlight on a DSLR with a pop-up flash. If you can't afford a speedlight with a swivel for bouncing: this is a MUST-HAVE investment. It is well worth the money. 3) Things that aren't so great about it: - It has a limited range. You really need to have a ceiling that is a considerable height above you or a wall nearby when shooting vertically. Of course, it won't be effective without a proximate ceiling or wall, but I honestly feel like that is something that should be expected and respected. - I do think that the mounting design could use a clip of some sort for added security on the mount, but it does well enough without it. This device along probably solves 90% of all the lighting problems on DSLRs with pop-up flash.

Best [$] I've ever spent!!

By Paminohio

I shoot mainly outdoors or indoors with window light. I don't own a speedlight and did not want to invest in one. I figured I'd try out the Lightscoop since it was only [$]. I did see the sample images but never thought I'd get the same results. Well, I was wrong! I love this and I am thrilled that I will be able to use this to supplement when window light is not enough. I plan on using a white reflector if I need to bounce from the side.

Amazed at the results

By Photojournalist2008

I'm a professional photographer and I travel a lot. I'm always looking for ways to cut back on weight - if not for the whole trip, then at least for daytrips or outings. This little thing can't do everything my Canon flash can do (I'm using the Lightscoop with a Canon EOS 30D) but for basic indoor portraits and other shots, you can absolutely get very similar results. I bet most editors I work for wouldn't be able to tell the difference. It's the best gadget in my photo bag - especially if yo...

Professor Kobre's Lightscoop, a bounce device for the pop-up flash on most 35mm DSLRs with interchangable lenses, slips over your camera's pop-up flash and allows you to bounce the flash like professionals bounce an expensive external flash. The Lightscoop is the inexpensive answer to natural-looking bounce flash and digital photography lighting. (Even professionals like it for casual shooting!) No more harsh shadows, bleached faces, red-eye, or cave effect from direct pop-up flash!

Reviewers tell the story:

"Bounce pop-up flash by snapping a Lightscoop over it, a little piece of plastic genius," Popular Photography, March 2008

"...just as if you had used one of those reflector umbrellas that the pros use," David Pogue, New York Times, "Circuits."

-- "It slips into your camera's hot shoe, fits right over the pop up flash, and redirects the camera's flash to a ceiling or wall. That's bounce, baby, bounce... as essential as a lens cap," DingbatMag, the monthly review of Cool Tools

"Your pop-up flash doesn't have to suck... I was stunned by the difference," Terry White's Tech Blog

The Standard version has a normal mirror and is used in most situations.
