Although the lens will fit physically, automatic diaphragm, auto-focusing or any other functions will not operate correctly while using this adapter. In this case "stop-down mode" will need to be used when metering since the lens does not have the ability to have its aperture controlled by the camera body. The Leica M 6-bit lens coding system works together with firmware in the newer camera bodies (starting with M8) to correct for various lenses. The lens coding is called '6-bit coding' because six fields in the bayonet ring are marked in black or white to represent a number from 1 to 64 in binary code. The information on the lens is used to help the camera to optimize image quality and this information is also written into the EXIF image file.
