Review Summary

I upgraded from a 1Dx Mark III to this, and I'm very happy. The focusing system is noteably more capable, and my EF lenses work better than ever. The EF 85/1.2 Mk2 in particular nails the focus every time - which was always a problem with this lens. The electronic shutter is so good there is little need to use the mechanical one. I knew it was a 24MP camera, so knocking it for that would be silly.

Outstanding camera, pathetic customer service, nonexistent camera shops in the Dallas / FT Worth metroplex

Exceeded expectations in every way. Laser focus for tens of thousands of images per day. Unsure of why others are upset over more claimed pixels. The R1 is the best investment I have ever made after 50 years on the job. Paid for itself on day one. Thank you Canon.

Anyone who complains about the 24MP is an idiot and doesn't shoot sports professionally. They also need to learn to frame the image using the view finder and not rely on cropping. 24 MP is more than enough. The R1 is the Canon equivalent of the Sony A9 III. The R5 II is the equivalent of the Sony A1 II - just $2000 cheaper. I own an R1 and R3. I also own an R5 II and a R5. The R1 solves most of the issues I have with the R3, like having dual CFX B card slots. Adding better AF, pre-capture, a bigger, brighter EVF, 40 FPS and to me it was worth the loss selling an R3. The same with the R5 II vs. the R. The question is, if I were to trade up again, would it be for a second R1 or a second R5 II? It would be for a second R1 :)

Its usable pixel counts usually surpass those high-res bodies (like A1 or R5II) if you are shooting at low light or ISO, or both. Believe me or not, my 32000 ISO shots holds more details than some of those cameras's shots at <10000 ISO. Its AF system is abusolutely the best I have ever seen. I use a well-calibrated red dot sight on R1 for fast-moving animals and the only thing I needed to do was to point the red dot at the animal and press the shutter. Even withou tuning its AF behavioer, every shot is in-focus, this is amazing..

I hoped this camera would be higher than the R5 which I own which has 45 mp images. I prayed that this Amazing camera would at least be 65 mp. Nope! It's just a 24 mp?. Why ? Why? Why? Fuljifilm has 104 mp cameras and Sony had 65 mp cameras and Canon does not.

I wanted to pre-order this, but I could not. This is just a slight hardware bump over the R3, sure the autofocus will be great but without a higher resolution picture, it will produce the same images that the R3 makes. Save your money and wait for a version that has more megapixels.

Great Camera.. Much better than expected... Excellent Sports . People/portrait, and LARGE wildlife camera.. The R5 Mark II is a better at capturing small/tiny wildlife and then cropping..
Introducing the Canon EOS R1, the flagship full-frame professional camera, designed for durable, fast-action photography and continuing the legacy of the EOS-1 Series.
The EOS R1 has subject detection & tracking, eye control, and more built-in.
Press the shutter button halfway to begin the pre-recording process and capture the previous 1/2 second of images before that full shutter press.
For even faster positioning of your active AF Area, the R1 adds Canon's Eye Control AF - even more advanced than the Eye Control in the EOS R3 camera. Once you calibrate the viewfinder to your eye, just look where you want to focus, and the AF Area will move there when you press the AF activation button. This new system is even robust enough to work when the user is wearing glasses.
Experience next-level autofocus with the EOS R1. Our new subject tracking technology allows you to maintain focus on a subject even when they are obscured briefly while shooting.
Action priority enables the camera to track specific people, balls, movement, and eye-control AF, ensuring you capture the perfect action shot even in fast-paced scenes. Works with three sports at the moment: soccer, volleyball, and basketball.
Our new focusing technology selects subjects according to movement and other factors so you always get a great action shot.
The DIGIC Accelerator chip is a completely new front-end processor developed by Canon to supplement the power of the proven DIGIC X processor.
The EOS R1 features an all-new 24.2 Megapixel back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor, ensuring blazing fast readout speeds and enhanced low-light performance. This powerhouse sensor delivers stunning image quality, virtually eliminating rolling shutter distortion and is perfect for high-speed shooting.
Processes large volumes of data directly from the image sensor for actions like AF detection to exposure metering calculations that enable eye-control focus, subject identification, and tracking.
The EOS R1 provides versatile integration with a range of high-performance video features, a built-in tally lamp, and is capable of recording 4-channel audio.
• 6K RAW: Recording in-camera at up to 60 fps
• 4K MP4: Recording up to 120 fps (with audio)
• 2K or Full HD: Recording up to 240 fps
The EOS R1 is equipped with three stabilization methods for spectacular video performance.
The new electronic viewfinder is now Canon's best ever featuring a 9.44 million dot resolution in an OLED display, a 0.9x magnification, and its maximum brightness is the highest yet in an EOS R-Series camera. Additionally, some of the EVF lenses inside the body are sealed in an airtight structure making it less likely that the viewfinder will fog up.
• Dual Slot Flexibility
• Dust- and Weather-Resistant
• Powerful Data Storage
Discover the unparalleled capabilities of the Canon EOS R1 Mirrorless Camera, our premier full-frame professional-grade camera. Engineered for robust, high-speed photography, this camera proudly carries forward the esteemed legacy of the EOS-1 Series.
The EOS R1 is equipped with the next generation of Canon EOS Autofocus, offering superior subject detection and tracking, advanced eye control, and more. With the innovative Pre-Continuous Shooting feature, you can press the shutter button halfway to initiate pre-recording, capturing the preceding half-second of images prior to a full shutter press.
Experience the power of next-level autofocus with the EOS R1. Our groundbreaking subject tracking technology ensures consistent focus on your subject, even during brief obstructions while shooting. The Advanced Eye Control AF offers rapid positioning of your active AF Area, surpassing even the Eye Control in the EOS R3 camera. Once the viewfinder is calibrated to your eye, simply look at your desired focus point, and the AF Area will shift accordingly upon pressing the AF activation button. This robust system is even compatible with users wearing glasses.
The EOS R1 introduces our new People Priority Cross-Type AF technology, intelligently selecting subjects based on movement and other factors, ensuring you always capture the perfect action shot. The Recognition and Subject Tracking feature prioritizes tracking specific people, balls, and movements, and integrates eye-control AF, guaranteeing the perfect action shot even in fast-paced scenes. Currently, this feature is compatible with soccer, volleyball, and basketball.
Powered by the DIGIC Accelerator chip, a novel front-end processor developed by Canon, the EOS R1 offers remarkable continuous shooting. This chip supplements the power of the proven DIGIC X processor, processing large volumes of data directly from the image sensor for actions like AF detection and exposure metering calculations, enabling eye-control focus, subject identification, and tracking.
