Loses details. Narrow range.

I did not like Reala. I tried it based on Internet recommendations, but found it copies the one major flaw several other Fuji lines have: It cannot handle light/shadows in the same picture together. There is a very very fine range in which you can get a decent exposure. Too much light and it instantly blows out detail and fades it away. Too little (even in normal every-day shadows on a sunny day) and it consumes all detail in a nearly-black representation. The middle ground, the narrow band in which you can expose it and have it look nice, also looks under exposed and rather dull. In short, it cannot handle shadows, it cannot handle highlights, the properly exposed portions look a bit under exposed, and it doesn't play well with multiple lights/shades in the same composition. I shot a test roll of it, overexposing shots as well. Even with 1 stop over exposure it loses a noticable amount of red tint in wood, brick, buildings, faces, etc. Red goes out the window quickly. It does, I noticed, look very nice with a flash and diffuser. It looks nice on anything with a smooth consistent lighting (no highlights, little shadows). On the good photos, the colors look great and the film is crisp. It simply will lose half the photo in a shadow where other films will not. I will say the prints scans nicely. I am not looking for a scan-only film. My main focus is to have and share these prints. I don't want a film I have to photoshop every print and then reprint it. In short, Reala has some good qualities but doesn't have the right "good" qualities for my needs. I need to see detail in shadows. I don't want to lose details on faces due to hat brims casting shadows. I would not recommend to others. There are better options. I am an amateur and this is my honest opinion.

Fuji Reala

Have been using this film exclusively for over 10 years. Shot hundreds of architectural projects. Always faithful reproduction of colors. Will need to check your labs work for any shifts they introduce. Use a color chart to help them. Extremely fine grain can go to 4'x6' prints which are of acceptable quality. Was so apprehensive about continuance I just bought 30 rolls.

I Love This Film

I love this film, it gives excellent color rendition. It's cheap and gives professional looking results. Matched with a sharp lens, the photographs come to life. I will always buy this film.

Long time user

I have know idea when I bought my first roll of Reala, But it was a long, long time ago and I'm still using it. Although I might say this is the first film I've bought in 5-6 years. You know got caught up in that Digital stuff. Had to shoot some film to see it I still could.

Impressive Film

I had my film printed on matte paper with no color or exposure correction from a local independent developer. I used this film on a trip into some rugged mountains, in canyons and forests therein. Many of the photos came out blurry because I didn't use a tripod, but that was expected with this low of a film speed. Even the blurry photos are wonderful, with a kind of sharp blur and expressive tones that captured subtle light differences well. As for the photos in focus, I think they're superior to the Kodak ISO 200 I have generally used until now. In particular, the color tones are noticeably more realistic in contrast. As well, the sharpness all over is improved, though a tripod would make a dramatic difference even then. I am most impressed by the range of color possible in a single shot, whereas with film I've used so far (kodak 800; aforementioned 200) color differences seem to kind of blend together. I'll be using this film primarily from now on.

Very good film for potraits. Great color retention, also great for making enlargements. Very little grain. The only film i use for weddings.

best affordable 100 ISO print film

This is the best affordable 100 ISO print film. Of course, you'll get better colors and tones using slides, but one has to consider costs. Forgiving of skin tones, appealing but not lurid saturation, decent contrast. Decent exposure latitude.

good color rendition but no bang

I recently went on a business trip and took the film with me. Depending on the film processor. The job can be muddy or really clear and sharp with excellent color rendition. I found an excellent processor to do the jobs and was really happy with the results.

There is nothing better in print film then Reala for pro or amatuer. Very reasonably priced. Great for potrait, family shots, photojournalism. Excellent skin tones, color.

A real work horse.

I scan this film with a Konica Minolta DiMage Elite 5400II film scanner and then work the image through Photoshop. The results are outstanding. I can easily produce 11x14 inch prints that are sharp and virtually grain free. Skin tones are exceptional. The color gamut appears to be broad and works well with Adobe RGB.

Excellent Film

A great fine grain film, especially for the enthusiast who doesn't have tons of money to spend, but wants super sharp pictures. I've enlarged pictures to 11x17 with sharp results. Good enough for framing. Other commercial brand film in the same price range or even more expensive (like stuff you buy at the drugstore) get grainy quickly when enlarging.

Great film.

I shot this film on location in the Greek islands. As long as you expose correctly for the highlights of the brillinat white buildings, it does a great job of spaning the full range of intensities with good snap and detail.

Closest Fuji print film to Velvia

Fuji says this is the closest print film they have to Velvia. It seems to be sharp and colorful. I tried Kodacolor UC for a while but didn't see any difference so I went back to Reala because it's half the price. For a 100 ISO print film this & Kodacolor UC are probably the best choices for general use. [...]
