It installs without a hitch. It is simple to rotate, control, and is clearly marked. There are no problems as long as you remain inside the indicated minimum and maximum. I like to take long exposures at sunrise and sunset, and I set it to the lowest setting to let just enough light through to enable auto-focus before moving it to the desired location. I haven't noticed any glitches or a decline in quality anywhere. I highly recommend this ND filter.

Works pretty well, but adds a little haze to video (tough to correct) and creates the dreaded VND "X" pretty early compared to its (much more expensive) counter-parts. Works well for a budget ND, but I feel like there are cheaper options that work as well or better. I'll be upgrading this year.

I love the versatility of this graduating filter. I can shoot long exposure in all lighting conditions. The coating is a little challenging to clean but even with a few smears I don’t really notice it in my images

I haven't used these filters yet (I bought two different sizes), but as usual with Tiffen products, they are very well built.

This is my first time using a ND filter. This is a great lens for someone to experiment with with out having to pay a bunch of money. I took a bunch of photos of the ocean at dusk and they came out great

I was very hesitant to buy a Neutral Density filter. I read good reviews about this on, so I bought it. I am pleased with it. It lengthen the shutter speed which is important for photos in full sun or even at night.

I've gotten to use this product several times and I love it. The initial feeling and build quality is sturdy and moves smoothly. I like the variance in stops of light it provides. If I had something negative to say, and why I rated it 4 stars is some of the black cross hatching kind of stuff that happens but it's rare and with video I don't have the problem, just shooting wide photographs. Overall quality is great, photos come out clear on my A7RIII. I would and have recommended this variable ND filter.

I bought this to use with my Nikon P1000 which can only stop down to f8, and adjusts the shutter speed to compensate. So filming 100 ISO at 25 fps at 1/50 in bright daylight is impossible without an ND filter. The variable ND was my starting point for this camera as I needed something I could work with fast and I also trust Tiffen's stuff. I initially bought a cheap filter from a box store while I waited for Adorama to finish Passover to ship and needed something urgently. That variable ND was horrendous and left big purple splashes that looked like horrible birthmarks on the image and you couldn't use it at it's marked maximum or even one stop under max. The Tiffen on the other hand works flawlessly. The only drawback I see is there's a little polarization so the windows at work look smudged.

I would recommend this ND filter. It is nicely built. Feels solid and moves smooth. Nice and clear glass. Was taking photos in the snow and it was working great. Just past max or right at max you get the x but it’s to be expected. Nice filter.

As video becomes more frequent and easier to use, we learn about the nuances of creating quality work in that medium. One of the standards is to make your work cinematic, rather than video - film-like rather than tv soap opera or newsy. This filter allows that, by giving you the ability to set your camera at film settings - 24fps and 1/48 shutter speed (60fps and 1/120 for slow mo) - known at the 180* rule. Often 24fps at 1/48th of a second means you have too much light for a proper exposure. Some cameras don't let you adjust for that by lowering the ISO far enough, and maybe more importantly, when you compensate by setting the f-stop higher, you loose the nice (and cinematic) bokeh background. The best option is this variable ND, which allows you to dial in how much light you need to cut (like putting on progressively darker sunglasses) for a proper exposure, without worrying about any of those other adjustments. Yes it's good for still photo work, for some of the same reasons, but it essential gear for videographers looking for a high quality cinematic look.

Tiffen Variable ND

This is a great product. I like how they made the filter bigger so you do not pick up any Vignettes. I have the Genus Variable ND also but it gives you an ugly yellow cast when you go to "8" - this one does not.
Terrific ND Filter
By Delmar J.
Unlike several reviewers who complainted about the variable ND filter at the highest settings, I read the instruction book and learned you do not use this at the maximum and minium rotation. You stop at the marked Min and Max settings. No cross star affect when you follow the directions. I have used this on a Nikon 17-55mm F/2.8 lens and got great results. I tested the ND settings at min in one step increments up to the max settings. The pictures were excellent. No issues with AF or AE ...

While the Tiffen 72mm Variable Neutral Density (ND) Filter offers a 2 to 8 stop light control, it's more than just a tool for controlling depth of field and exposure. This versatile and flexible accessory combines the functionality of multiple Neutral Density filters into one compact, lightweight design, making it an essential addition to any photographer's or videographer's kit.
The Tiffen Variable ND filter operates on the same principle as a Circular Polarizer. Simply rotate the filter until you achieve your desired effect and capture your shot. This user-friendly design allows for continuous control over the amount of light entering your lens, ranging approximately from 2 (ND 0.6) to 8 (ND 2.4) stops. This ensures that you maintain the integrity of your image, whether you're shooting in intense sunlight, capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset, or working in indoor environments with excessive overhead lighting.
Please note that the evenly spaced indexing marks between the MIN and MAX settings on the Tiffen Variable ND filter are not calibrated stops. These are reference points, designed to help you return to a previous setting with ease.
Whether you're planning a trip to the Grand Canyon or simply exploring your local surroundings, the Tiffen 72mm Variable Neutral Density (ND) Filter is a must-have tool for outdoor photography and videography. Experience the difference in light control and image quality with this remarkable filter.
