Questions & Answers

DONNA A : What is the diffusion quality? Does this give off a soft or harsh light?LEROY M : The LED's are covered with a thin plastic material with a little texture to it. It is essentially a hard 4" x 6" light source.JOHN H : Somewhat harsh. The biggest thing I don't like is that you can't dim down to zero. Minimum is still too bright for somethings, like macro close up on a wedding cake. I've just learned to step back and zoom. I use this light on my dslr at every wedding I film though. Positives: love the color control, batteries last a long time, and it can throw a ton of light in a dark reception to light 10 people at once. Just have to warm the color for harshness. I still use it but looking for one that will zero dim but with the same full intensity at maxCRAIG A : Medium if you are shooting a closeup of something, it might be concidered hard light so a thin diffusion over the front might be in order.MARC F : The light is difuused and soft quality unleaded it is placed very close to the person or object. It's useful to light and area when you don't want to use a flash. If more than one is used ithey can satisfactorily simulate lighting setups for portraits or product lighting.
Shopper : is there an attachment to an Iphone for the Flashpoint 198 LED - Bi Color On Camera Light?THOMAS C : I do not know of one.MARC F : No there is not an attachment for an iPhone is deigned attachment on your camera flash. I bought some attachments that allows a flash to be placed on a tripod. That is how I use mine for portraits and still life. It's quite versitle being light weight, cool to touch besidesits other features. Let me know if I can help further with other questions.Sharon S : Have not seen one--sort of doubt there is one. I use mine off-camera mounted on a stand.ROBERT T : No, there is not.LEROY M : No, the iPhone by itself does not have a hot shoe to slip the mount into. When I use this with my iPhone I either have it placed onto something or held in my left hand.
Shopper : continuous light? can you turn it on and leave it on or is it just flashJOHN B : It stays on for as long as you need (yes, continuous light)! So it works for videography as well as photography, and makes it way easier to set up shots, knowing what the lighting looks like before taking the picture.DAVID D : Yes, this is a continuous light source. It does not "flash". It has a dial for "on" which also controls brightness. There is a second dial to control color, going from cool white to warm white.MANUEL P : You can leave on. Actually I don't think there is a way to make it flash...Arthur L : Yes, the unit's usual mode of operation provides continuous light. I use it for video photography.THOMAS F : This a continuous light - NOT a flash It does have different temperature settings. It does emit a good amount of light, adequate for digital stills or video.CINDY M : Yes.ANGELA S : Yes you cn leave it on. It is constant light. Very useful to use as a bounce light.JOEL R : This is a continuous light that works well for video and/ or a fill light for still photography. There is no flash capability for still photography, but excellent in situations where you just need a pop of fill light and don't have a reflector to bounce light back into a subject. This also can work well for still photography. I use primarily for fill light situations when I'm on location for both still and video work.TIM O : Doesn't flash, just continuousKENNETH H : You can leave it on. I use Sony NP-F750 and NP-F330 camcorder batteries. Works great!Leonas V : Continuous (NOT a flash.)DOUGLAS B : It is continuous light only, turn it on and leave it. The "hotshoe" is just how it mounts to the camera.MARTIN S : It is not a flash unit. It goes on as long as you want so it is also perfect for video. I see it is $50 and that is an amazing price for such a well made unit.

Great light for the money

I love that you can adjust the two color temps either together or separately. And dim to fine tune the direction.

Great Light for the Price

Didn't want to spend a fortune for special, limited uses, but the price of this one was quite reasonable. Seems to do everything the more expensive ones do.

Amazing 2K lumens

I bought 2 and I am very happy with them, just what I was looking for, you have to purchase sony batteries that are about 10 bucks. Great products on the LED's. Leoescobar.com

Excellent light

I love this for my purposes, which include the examination of paintings. The dimmer switch offers a nice range of brightness, while the color temperature settings are great, also. Sometimes I need to use it by holding it, and for that it is not idea, as the tripod attachment area is not that comfortable to hold. On a tripod, though, it works very well.

Great light except one thing

Great light. Would give 5 star if it allowed you to dim all the way down. The lowest dim is still too bright sometimes

Good inexpensive LED light

I've only used the light a couple of times but it seems to work very well. I've accidentally dropped it without any harm. The brackets are a weak point but, for the price, I'm pretty happy.

Very good light. I would recommend it.

So far so good. Easy to assemble looks very good on top of my Sony HXC MC 2000 camera. When we cover sports events other groups move to the side now. Light is very powerful plus you can adjust to need. Thumps up!

Great light for the price.

It is better with a power supply. I was fortunate that my Sony lithium battery packs and power supply are inter changeable. It has a slide to move it from warm to bright light. Great auxiliary light.

Can't say yes or no to Recommended.

The light itself is very nice and does exactly what it says, so I'm impressed with that. However; I'm wondering how long the very cheap plastic will last before something breaks. Needless to say, I'll be using it very carefully!

Okay for the price

Bought them to do some small product photography. Also got some Sony clone battery packs to power these. With NPF550 batteries the lights were good for about 2 hours at full power. There is no AC adapter input.

Versital light source

I purchased 2 units and use them for back light or side light of subjects. the ability to change color of the light adds to their usefulness. A few clamps are very useful because they are small enough to put most anywhere.

Great Deal

This is a great product for the very reduced price it's at. The build quality is about medium, and you might want something more rugged for pro work, but it's worked great the two times I've used it, and will probably replace it with a more expensive but durable unit later.

Love it.

Don't forget to buy a battery and charger, which you can get for only about $15-$20 more. Once you're set these are great close work lights! Love the color control and built in dimmers. I own 6. You should too.

Great quality of light

Very impressed with the quality of light from this device. I have been slow to migrate to the LED style lighting as the traditional strobes are money. This might change my mind.

Great for my needs

This provided just the right amount of light needed to video an event. The only downside was the plastic hot shoe mount felt flimsy as if it was going to fall off (but it stayed on the whole time). I think it would be more secure a fit if it was made of metal. Overall I was satisfied.

Flashpoint 198 review - buy one, you'll like it

At this price, you can't beat it. I have two older units that don't work as well that cost twice the price. I actually bought two of these 198's and they have an attachment to couple them together. If you buy 4 units you can make a larger square which is great for weddings and other low light situations needing more lighting. Place them on a small 8" tripod for stationary light accent from under a chair or table. The unit has a nice wide screen and a diffuser is included which is needed to soften light. The controls are precise to get your desired lighting mix and of course, the warmness controll is very responsive. It works on 6 AA batteries or a standard BP 950 Canon Cancorder battery which when mounted can be used grab handle if doing a shot free hand. There are other models at higher prices and I assume yield a larger screen for more lighting per unit and heavier as well. In doing weddings, I need to be mobile and be light weight to move around in getting the shots. So this unit fits the need best.

Light any time

There are many situations in nature where a flash is not appropriate but the conditions are not good enough to get a decent picture with any camera. This flashpoint takes care of that.

A nice addition to my collection

By David B.

I have several thousand dollars' invested in a dozen lights of every conceivable type, up to a set of four 650 Arri's. Even with a large LED panel and two small but more powerful LED units, this is a welcome addition. The battery draw on my Sony-type batteries is low, and the battery meter and variable color temp are great features on such an affordable light. Even the case is decent for placing in a larger production case. Drawbacks: this is borderline too heavy with battery to place on a ...

Perfect light for photographers and video camera men

By Bijay D.

I am a professional photographer and always used videographer's light to take pictures of bride and groom creating an ambient lit look and pose. Finally I decided to get my own ambient light source and bought these lights. Used it at one event and very happy with size, light controls, power options and overall performance. I will buy more slowly and cascade to make a bigger light source. Right now using AA rechargable batteries but I will add Sony batteries to power these lights in near future.

Light enough to go anywhere.
Enough light to go everywhere!

Flashpoint 's BiColor 198B on-camera portable LED light provides action videographers and still photographers who use DSLR's and HD camcorders with a bi-color wash of illumination from a standard 60° spread. The precision color temperature dial regulates between 3200-5600K to provide lightening fast solutions for the 'run and gun' shooters, moving from one lighting situation to the next ambient environmental challenge. Our LED lights provide visually accurate color temperatures, flicker-free output, and no color shift when dimming. When used outdoors, the small, self-contained LED light produces copious fill light to alleviate deep shadows, while blending ambient available light to add modeling to subjects.

Super lightweight, this 'go anywhere' device fits comfortably atop the hot shoe of your camera or off-camera via the convenient stand thread. The power options uses almost any capacity industry standard Sony lithium battery cells and can be run off universally available AA's as well. This 198B model offers a clear digital battery power level verification for the ever vigilant. Brightness levels are controlled by stepless control dials on the rear, assure flicker free shooting.

The light can be linked by means of hotshoe type tracks to dovetail on vertical and horizontal configurations with sister units to create a multi-panel power array.

The latest LED technology.
Uncompromised light quality.
Unheard of value.

Qliq Qwip
One of the brightest advances in technology is the advent of the light-emitting diode (LED), a two-lead semiconductor light source. When an appropriate voltage is applied to the leads, electrons are able to recombine with electron 'holes' within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electroluminescence, and the color of the light is determined by the specific energy band gap of the semiconductor.

Impressed yet? No?
LEDs are small, durable and need little power, so they are used in LED strobe lights or continuous camera lights without detrimental heat output, and operate at a safe, low voltage, instead of the 250+ volts commonly found in Xenon strobe tube-based lighting. This is especially useful in lighting for videographers, where space is at a premium and bulky voltage-raising circuitry is undesirable.

Each LED gem glows with exceptional brilliance of light and human genius that old Thomas Edison would have surely appreciated.
