Questions & Answers

Jeanel C : Hi. I am creating YouTube videos with a professional look and feel. I am looking for lighting to light up my face and was wondering if the CL-500R would be enough or do I need to invest in the larger version? I don't get as much sun light in my home so the lighting does not look as good as I would like it to. Thanks for the advise!DUSTY S : Hi, Jeanel. This unit puts out a lot of light and works great for tabletop photos and portraits. I often put a sock on it to make the output softer. Depending on the look you need, this unit probably won't fill a room, but if you just need to light your face and the area around it, you should be very happy with it.JIM P : I believe it would be bright enough as a main light for a headshot. You may want another for a background light and a third for fill. The lights are very easy to regulate intensity.JOE G : I would not buy these again.
MICHAEL G : I photograph my paintings, with enough savvy from having been a magazine art director for many years (with color cards in the shot, etc.). Would two of these CL-500R lights successfully light, say a 48" x 48" painting without dark spots? I'd love not having to do too much Photoshop work afterwards.SCOTT S : Yes, these lights put out a decent quality light and can be dimmed. I would say two of these lights would suit your purposes for sure.CHARLES J : Michael ... I use a CL-500R and two Flashpoint CL-1144R LED Circular Light lights to shoot portraits and interiors. I will never go back to standard flash again. Although I have never done the type of photography that you have listed, I would think that shooting these lights in to an umbrella and not directly at the paintings would accomplish your end result. I hope this helps.Mike H : I would say you're going to end up with dark spots on something that big. I would probably recommend either the Flashpoint 1300 bi-color or the Savage 2000W kit with some large softboxes.HAROLD J : I don't think they will. I use them for headshots and shoulders portraits. I also use an additional face light.Frank B : I have photographed smaller works than 48 by 48 inch with good results, Such as 22 by 15. I also use them for smaller pieces. They have good brightness control. My son in law, a cinematographer, was impressed with them. I would think the positioning would be critical, but you would know about that.MICHAEL S : If only one of these lamps was set up about 15' away it would adequately light up a 48x48" painting for photography with a modern DSLR camera. However, two at different angles would be much better for paintings that have texture. Two of these lamps makes plenty of light to photograph a group of eight people, which was an area of about 72"x72" in my case. Since you are photographing a flat surface you can use a lower aperture, which will help bring more light into your camera.JAMES L : I would say that if you attached 36" or 42" reflective umbrellas to them (not where the light passes through the umbrella) then you MAY be able to get enough of a wide light source to light that large an area. If using pass-through umbrellas, the light source won't be large enough for sure, especially for a square object. Possibly if it is a smaller, rectangular object, like 24x36. You may want to use two strobes that you can connect large light boxes to for best results.JAN D : I think that 2 of the larger lights would be necessary.
Craig M : WHAT IS THE EXACT MODEL OF THE BATTERY PACK FOR THIS LIGHT?DUSTY S : Nothing exact that I can find. "Any V-mount battery" is suggested, and there are a bunch of them with a range of prices, and they generally need an adapter. I haven't needed to use a battery with mine. Hopefully, another responder to your inquiry with have more info.WALLACE R : Not aware of a battery pack. The power plugs into the wall. Would expect you could use a battery pack though.JAY O : There is no specific battery pack for this light. When I bought mine the product description said it used a V-Mount battery. It does NOT. There is no battery mount, only a place where a 12-volt battery pack can plug in..I got my battery pack from eBay. You can also look at "Batteries, Plus" if you have one in your area. The connector is the main thing you need to match. The voltage range is pretty wide on this light, however, the connection on the light, itself, is the harder thing to match. Good luck.SAKITA W : as far as I know there isn't one... I was dupped into purchasing one that doesn't fit...

It’s ok for a short distance portrait, otherwise need more power.

A little more power or a way to connect to a battery to be completely portable would be receomended.

Just what I've been searching for...

I've always preferred to work with continuous lighting, but historically they generated too much heat. This unit (and bigger brother) resolves that problem nicely. The CL-500R is excellent for single person headshots, and great as a fill light as well. A great addition to anyone's lighting inventory, and the Flashpoint pricing is hard to beat!

Great secondary light for product photography

We are using this along with its big sister (the CL-1440) and they work together quite nicely. It is just the right amount of light for medium size product photography. Very consistent light, little heat or noise and easy setup. Can't really ask for anything more.

Excellent!

I was skeptical that LED lamps would provide enough light. These do! The lamp housings and stands are sturdy and well made. (Not cheap and flimsy at all.) I like the wide range of brightness control, and the light is white over the full brightness range. Each lamp cord is long enough reach across a large room. Each lamp has an ON/OFF switch.

Great light till it failed

Bright enough to be a useful video light at reasonable working distance when shooting, say, ISO 800, 1/40, f 5.6 for video. Color rendition is good, better than the Home Depot LED work light I also use (although that one is not bad). But after maybe 5 hours total on time, it started to flicker, and the next day it went off. Sending it back.

Love this light

Love this light. I have two of them that I use for video, still photography and for stage lighting on location shoots. The ability to dim these is a huge plus for adding light where I need it when shooting a stage show in a small venue that doesn't have many lights. This gives good lighting in an otherwise dimly lit environment. I have used this light as a hair light and to light a background in portraits with great success. These are small enough to travel with easily and the included bags are great for this as well. I would highly recommend this light.

Great light source for the $

I love the compact footprint on this led panel. It's light weight and it looks really well put together. It's not the brightest thing in the universe, but will do a great job for tabletop and portraiture shots.

Great product, with only one regret.

Let me start out by saying it is a solidly built product that does what it claims to. The diffuser works well, and the built in umbrella holder also works like it is supposed to. The quality of light is consistent, but may not be enough for your needs. This leads me to my regret: I bought 2 of the 500r when I should have bought one 500r and one of the larger model. I use these for photography and not video, and I have found that while this size is great for a fill light, it isn't quite strong enough to use as the main light in a medium to large room. This isn't a problem with the light itself, it is my own fault for not wanting to spend the extra $200 on the larger size light. The included case is nice also. I would highly recommend this product for a fill light, but would suggest going with the larger(more expensive) model for a main light.

Good light, easy set up

This is a good little light for fill or to light a background. It comes in a nice carry case, and setup is simple. It barely puts off any heat and the dimmer feature allows you to tailor the amount of light as needed. There is a hum from the light when the dimmer is not at full power, but it is barely noticeable. I read about it in another review and if I hadn't been aware of the issue and looking for it I'm not sure I ever would have noticed it.

Glad I switched to LED lights

I wanted some new lights for shooting video interviews. I bought LED lights because they don't get hot. My old studio lights put out so much heat that I wanted to try LED lights and I'm glad I did! I also like how you can adjust the brightness from 10% - 100%.

Nice light

provides lots of fill light and having it's own shower cap diffuser is great for getting up close.

Love my LED light

Light enough to go anywhere.
Enough light to go everywhere.

The Flashpoint LED 500 follows traditional round reflector design in a modern brilliant LED source. The soft, flattering glow is perfect for lighting people for portraits, interviews, or fashion, with or without the included fitted diffusion cloth. The circular array creates pleasing illumination and naturally round catch lights, imitating sun lit highlights. While extremely brilliant and efficient, the 500 LED bulbs stay cool, keeping your subjects comfortable, even when used close-up. Color is consistent and flicker free at 5600K daylight even while dimming down to 10%. And, light output from 10-100% can be remotely controlled for less intrusive presence on the set. You can achieve soft box 'shoot through' quality by using the included elastic rimmed cloth diffuser. An umbrella channel is built into the adjustable mount when you want to soften and spread the light even further.

The Flashpoint LED500 goes anywhere. The super tough LED's are powered by DC, with optional accessories. With a lamp hour life of 50,000 you can enjoy trouble free, economical use for years and years.

The latest LED technology.
Uncompromised light quality.
Unheard of value.

Qliq Qwip
One of the brightest advances in technology is the advent of the light-emitting diode (LED), a two-lead semiconductor light source. When an appropriate voltage is applied to the leads, electrons are able to recombine with electron 'holes' within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electroluminescence, and the color of the light is determined by the specific energy band gap of the semiconductor.

Impressed yet? No?
LEDs are small, durable and need little power, so they are used in LED strobe lights or continuous camera lights without detrimental heat output, and operate at a safe, low voltage, instead of the 250+ volts commonly found in Xenon strobe tube-based lighting. This is especially useful in lighting for videographers, where space is at a premium and bulky voltage-raising circuitry is undesirable.

Each LED gem glows with exceptional brilliance of light and human genius that old Thomas Edison would have surely appreciated.
