Great little ring light at a great price!

This is a great little ring light for the money. It came well packaged and except for the AA batteries, everything needed to get started right away. Within 10 minutes I was trying my first shots with it. It includes several, threaded adapter rings to attach it to most any, common filter-thread size. For my purposes, I actually like the LED light system better than a traditional xenon strobe, as it makes setting exposures easier because the light can stay on continuously, allowing WYSIWYG and eliminating guesswork. No hassles with flash synch either. If you want an inexpensive way to light macro shots the way pros do, this is a great way to get started and at a great price.

Impressed for the price

Considering the low price point, it seems pretty well constructed. It's pretty bright at top setting, so has a decent range. The only real disappointment would be that the connecting cable doesn't unplug at either end. That could be an issue if it's damaged it can't be easily replaced.

Good for the price

Good piece of gear for the price. Not as powerful as some of the more costly ring lights, but easy to connect, setup & use.

Love the FlashPoint Macro Ring Light

This is a very good value for the money. It is easy to use and makes lighting for macro-shoots very simple. The light around the subject is even. Hot spots are not a problem.

Great value for getting into macro photography

I bought this to support starting with some macro photography. I'm sure more serious people will want more power than this can put out, but this is a great, inexpensive way to get started. It also may be a good additional fill for short-range portrait work. I'd recommend using rechargeable batteries as it looks like I'll be going through the conventional alkalines I have in there now pretty quickly.

It's ok...just ok

You get what you pay for... It's ok.. I have since also purchased a new sb-600 and am trying to adapt it for macro.. the VL-48 is ok for things you can take multiple shots of to get it perfect... but I would rather use a flash with i-ttl for the things you have one chance to get...fastest shutter speed I can use is 1/125 or I get the banding from the shutter curtains... for$.... It's ok

OK for what you pay

Adapter ring did not tighten on lens making ring light pivot. Maybe it is supposed to do that. Have not used it yet but I think it will perform like what I anticipated.

not quite

Based on the price I admittedly was not expecting much, but I did expect to be able to use it. My biggest complaint was the same as that of several others. I couldn't keep it from falling off of the lens long enough to take any pictures. I am arranging to send it back tomorrow, but am not sure what to attempt to replace it with. I'm rely not interested in spending a ton of money on something like this but I do a lot of macro photography, Stay tuned for chapter 2 of this continuing saga.

I would recommend this.

I recently purchased a 65 mm macro lens, and lighting is essential for getting a great picture with macro photography. From what I have used of this ring light, it works well, attached to the camera easily, and is simple to use but works great. I would recommend this because it lights up a picture great, and has different light styles and settings.

Really not a bad flash

Very light, compact, LED, It does work as flash and a constant light. it is very bright, only issue I have is that its not TTL but once you get it manually synced its a great lens.

Very nice for the price and bright enough!

Very pleased with this unit. Came with all the adapters to mount it on different lenses 49mm-77mm. Very light weight. It is not a primary flash, it is for close up and macro photography and works quite well for this! Couldn't beat the price on sale for 19.95. The brightness of the unit is adjustable in all modes.

A good buy

Have been wanting an inexpensive ring flash for some time, and this sale happened at the right time. Kit includes lots of adapters to fit various size lenses and also a bunch of colored gels to fit over the ring light. Light is quite versatile, can adjust power of flash and also use as a permanently on light source. Interesting feature you can also set as a half ring light(right or left), useful for more contrasty lighting of object.

Good build, great value

Great light for the price. It's not the best you can buy, but for $ it works great and gets you started in macro lighting. I'm impressed!

About as I expected for $

The Ring Flash is about what I expected for the price. Have made shots with several different lens. I did notice that any lens over 62mm in diameter had some vignetting in the image. With zooms, you need to be at just about full extension to not have the vignetting. the continuous light mode seems to work best for me.

Very Reasonably Priced

This macro ring light comes with a good selection of adapters for lenses. I found the price very reasonable making it a good buy. I suspect it will fill my need for additional light in macro photography.

I was looking for an easy to use macro light. The unit fully meets my needs. Another nice aspect of the kit are the filter rings included in the kit.

Bright for the size, has one issue

The light is bright enough for macro work. I look forward to using it for butterflies and small product images. However, there is one issue. Light tends to fog or flare the image due to bounce back into the front of the lens. I think I can fix that with a slim rim of black tape or paint around the inside rim of the ring flash. So for $20,not bad. On a side note, the unit took 11 days to be delivered after Adorama/UPS said it was shipped.

May Just Buy a Second One

I gave this a test when it arrived. The instruction card that came with the Ring Light was easy to follow and explained every button, every function, setup instructions, and the specs very clearly. I found the instruction card very helpful. I found the light to be very bright both as a flash and in continuous light mode. I can see how this could be used for fill light. What is really nice is the continuous light. Using the continuous light you can adjust the power to the level that gives you the light you need. Then you can switch to flash mode and fire away. A lot easier than shot and adjust and shot again all the time. I really see where the light I get from the ring light will be extremely better than using either the built or standard hot shoe mounted flash. There have been some reviews that said the light was poor. On my first couple of shots I thought the same thing. Then I looked at the instructions and the specs said the shutter speed should be 1/100. Once I changed from 1/200 (the sync speed for my camera) to 1/100 I had plenty of quality light. I think this is a very nice setup and that a person can get very good photos using a macro lens or closeup lens filters. I am very pleased with this ring light and would highly recommend it to others. Read the instructions, watch your shutter speed, and everything should be fine. Can't wait to get started in earnest with this in the morning.

The Price is Right

Plenty of light for close-in macro work. May be a little underpowered for long range work.

Sent mine back

Sent it back. Hard to turn on, harder to turn off (had to remove a battery) Lens rings are made of plastic and the rings would not securely screw in to the lens. Just the slightest bump on the flash head and they would fall off. Perhaps if they had metal rings it would be better. The concept is great but . . . .

I was enjoying this unit until there was a price drop within a week or two after my purchase. Still like the unit, but wish I had waited. It's a great deal now.

A good little ringlight

It is small and good for closeup work but don't expect miracles if you want something for portraits or such. The batteries seem to hold on for longer than I do but if you are far afield, bring spares.

Flashpoint Ring Flash Specifications

About Flashpoint Ring Flash

Flashpoint Macro Ring Light VL-48
The Flashpoint Macro Ring Light is a brilliant 48 LED ringlight, optimized to satisfy the ever innovative creative photographers and videographers seeking unobtrusive and detailed illumination with virtually shadow-free lighting, and for providing alluring catch-'rings'-lights in the eyes of subjects when used with fashion and portrait work. This versatile ringlight surrounds the front element of your lens, delivering 100 lux at 39 inches, or 100 cm, perfect for the macro photographer. It is a 'must-have' for nature and field shooters in macro and close-up situations. And since it is not strobe flash based, the 5600KLED light lets you take advantage of full TTL metering without any compensation due to close-up extension and restriction of recycle times.

The light is extremely compact, lightweight and a breeze to use with any DSLR equipped with lenses from 49mm up to 77mm in filter diameter. The circular array creates exquisite detail emanating from the ring-of-light, not comprised by harsh off axis light. As the LED's surround the optical axis of the lens, the distance of the flash from the optical axis becomes critical. When the subject is very close to the camera, as is the case in macro photography, the size of the ring flash is also significant, so that light enwraps the subject from 360 degrees. However, this light has the additional option of purposely creating direction based modeling by switching half of the LED bulbs off and rotating the ring light for the desired effect. Four translucent light modifiers, white, frosted, amber, and blue, are included to color balance the LED's to available light from the ring light. While the best results will be gained by continuous lighting, a flash mode provides a brief burst of light to conserve battery power.

The main control unit attaches to the camera on the hot shoe, requires 4 AA batteries and features a 1.6" backlit LCD display panel for ring light settings. Eight precision adapter rings are included to fit a wide range of lens diameters from 49, 52, 55, 58, 62, 67, 72, and 77mm.
