Yes, it’s just plastic - but so much easier to diffuse the ring light, at about $13 a serious bargain instead of having to DIY. The pieces are made to interlock and stay mounted nicely. Simple and worth it for me, I would definitely recommend.

I bought this on a special offer and I cannot believe the value, ease of set up and quality of results. Previously I struggled with bounce flashes, umbrellas etc. But this is dead simple. The light output is variable and permanently on. I love the ring light in the eye effect. The results on my 5D Mark III are superb - but are also great with iPhones etc. I used this for some church photos - where time was of the essence and no fussy backdrops etc - just a green painted wall. And the ring light is super light to transport. Go for it!

I used the light for macros of butterfly larvae and chrysalide. It creates perfect light for these subjects. It's much more functional than flash units for macro lighting. The fluorescent light ring strength is adjustable using a small dial. The softlight cloth makes it easy to position the unit to create soft shadows and eliminate glare. The tripod is substantial and the head for the light is easily adjusted. This use may not be what the light was engineered for, but it works for this purpose quite well.

The light works well and comes with a nice diffuser to soften the look. The stand is well made with a good clamp system. The travel case is a real nice surprise. I did not expect a lot but it is well made and will certainly work well if you need to travel with this system on occasion. The light is not quite as bright as I would like but it works if you get it closer to the subject. Great for product shots. Overall better than I expected!

I recently purchased the 19" model, primarily for portraits. I have used it twice, and have had nothing but great reviews of the photos that I have taken, while using this. I am a crime scene photographer, and also do a vast majority of the photography work at the police department, where I am employed, to include the officer of the quarter and officer of the year photos. I have used it to take photos of the last couple of award winners, and the photos turned out sharp. If you are on a budget, and need additional lighting, I would recommend this.

Not impressed with this ringlight. Light was 'ok' , but plastic tungsten and daylight filters kept popping off of the light and would not stay on. Poor quality and machining. Didn't work for me.
