The CLAR 20" x 27" Fluorescent SoftBox with AC Plug and Spiral 85W Bulb is easy to assemble and keeps its cool despite the high output. The unit comes with a flicker-free compact fluorescent, daylight balanced spiral bulb, rated at 5500 degrees Kelvin. 85 watts in fluorescent technology translates into 350 watts of quartz light output to deliver much more lumens per KW. Even more, the softbox hardware snaps into place, similar to our popular EZ Lock system. Screw the bulb into the socket, unfold the softbox, connect to an AC source and flip the switch. No rods to struggle with, no speed rings to align with the rods. This long-lasting "cool" light emits very little heat and can stay on all day long without a problem of overheating or energy draw.   The CLAR FL Softbox can be used with the simplest digital cameras or camcorders as the continuous light creates a WYSIWYG scenario. Just aim and shoot to capture subjects with mastering a new photographic technique. The right amount of diffusion and the smoothest of lightbox positioning options. The mild temperature output makes it ideal for shooting portraits or still life.   And, when you're done, remove the bulb, fold the four sides together, like an umbrella, and be on your way.  

I bought this Ten years ago before LEDs. It is a great kit for the money.

Great kit for the money.

Bought them for my daughter. She uses them for product photography and online clothing shows. They work very, very well. I don?t know long term but we are very happy with the quality and value.

Great value

I got really sick from LED lights when shooting video content or having a makeup artist work on my face - these bulbs do get hot but better than being sick like the flu and stomach ache for 2 days due to cheap LEDs that flicker.

run hot but worth it

Works great! The only problem is that one of the lights that came with it didn't work, and it's hard if not impossible to find another light of the same wattage and color temperature. If they manufacturers replace the bulbs with more commonly-used ones, I would give this 5 stars

I love the  sturdy tripod. Its do stable to the  ground. Love the big size bulb

I liked the light quality and the box size was nice for portraits. I also used it for back lighting other translucent items to see textures for some macros. The problem I had was the plastic coupler for the 5/8 adaptor broke after a handful of uses. It seemed to be too much weight on that plastic piece.

It is great for the price. Works as it should. You many consider a brighter bulb, but the one that came with it worked for me.

Great starter equipment

As the owner of a small ad agency, we are called upon to do table top photography from time to time. We don't have a typical photography studio on site and have struggled to produce color neutral images with more expensive lighting systems than the CLAR equipment.  With CLAR, the 5500K bulbs make achieving product color fidelity infinitely easier with our Canon T2i with no color retouching necessary.
Last but no least, you can't beat the price and ease of set up. Two big thumbs up!

Cool Light

I needed a simple softbox setup for taking product shots for my wife's business. This set gives me the nice soft and balanced lighting I was looking for in the size I needed. The product quality is better than some reviews lead me to believe.  Since I'm only using these lights at home for the most part, I'm certain I will get years of good use from them.  They will certainly help out with some of my portrait work as well.

Although these are considered entry level lights, I ordered them from Adorama because I trust them to sell only quality items and I'm so glad I didn't give into low price items on Amazon.

No Disappointments!

I did not know what to expect when I order the CLAR 2-Light SoftBox Kit. I am happy with my purchase. They setup and break down quickly and easily. The quality is better than I expected. The light output meets my needs. I take portraits of my family. This kit makes lighting them easier than table lamps I have tried to use in the past.

Quality

The equipment worked great. The support to keep the box open is a bit hard to set up and if you are going to be traveling with the equipment it does not seem as though the flimsy supports will last through multiple setup/teardowns.

Works, but may not be the best option if you plan to travel with it.

So far, I am very happy with the purchase.  These were bought after viewing an Adorama tutorial on imaging old photos.  They seem to be exactly what the doctor order.  It may just be me, but they are pretty big, and I was looking to be able to turn the lights sideways but haven't found a way to do it.  Other than that, I am happy with my purchase.

A Long Way From Home

Nice kit but the lights aren't that bright. They will work but U need to adjust aperture & iso to get your shutter speed up.
The soft boxes only fit the light sockets. They can't be removed & used with a speed light. The stands can be used in other applications tho. The 11/16" stud accepts an off camea flash adapter & my XPLOR 600

Light isn't real bright

This is the first time I've bought something and had it set up and ready to go in 10 minutes. The stands are heavy duty and the clamps stay where you put them. The lights are nice and bright. Best of all it packs up into a nice case. It was a great purchase.
