Questions & Answers

Shopper : Is this matte box compatible with Sony FS 100?CHRISTOPHER M : This matte box is compatible with an FS100 depending on the baseplate you are using and also the type of lenses you are usingKnick T : Matte box will work with any camera as long it has the proper baseplate and 15mm rods for matte box to attach to.William B : Not sure as I do not have one. It it adjustable and it is a nice unit.MATHIEU R : I do not know! I have used it only with nikon DSLR's.WILLIAM C : It should be compatible with any camera that is attached to a 15mm rail. The only thing you need to be concerned about is the height of the camera while it sits on a 15mm rig base. The matte box, if I recall, is adjustable vertically. Although not by alot.
ROBERT S : Just received the mattebox and it seems to be very well made. Only issue is that as it sits on the rods it is a little crooked. Is there a manual or instructions anywhere online? It has a few adjusting screws and hex bolts that I'm not sure how to adjust to get it to sit straight. Thanks!CHAD C : I doubt there is a manual, but I might be able to help. I've been using this matte box for a while. If there is a way to see a picture of what you're describing, then I might have a better understanding of what you're describing.LUCIANO C : No manual that I was able to see anywhere, but with a little patience I was able to adjust mine well. My rods, however, are not flexible, and I have a support right next to the box as well. I wonder if that may be a factor. For the price, we find that the few adjustments we had to make are well worth it.
Minco v : Will the Redrock Micro microMatteBox Knob Kit (<a href="http://www.adorama.com/RRMMBKKBK.html" target="_blank">http://www.adorama.com/RRMMBKKBK.html</a>) fit on this mattebox? Thanks!DENNIS C : I don't know if the knob kit will fit, but I can tell you that this matte box is much larger than I thought it would be. I wanted to use it with the Kamerar Tank but my follow focus will only work with certain longer lenses. I was going to return it but I waited too long. I ended up purchasing the Kamerar matte box also.

This is a good unit

This is a good unit. I saw other matt boxes in this price range that are laughable. Ther were 2 others that seemed solid but I'm happy that the I chose this s one. I would've given it 5 stars if it came with the filters ;)

I was scared it would not center on my BlackMagick Pocket Cinema Camera Varavon cage and rails-BUT-it fits PERFECT center ! And the quality, swingawayarm, and barndoors, french flags, rotating filtertray´s-all but the 2 superlightweight dropinn plastic or carbon ? filtertray´s which feels okay sturdy, its all in fine machineed light metal -i REALLY feel i got a serious peice of filmgear, for a 1/3 of what it easyly COULD have costed! Pretty cool MatteBox !

Awesome

Item comes as pictures with blue screw knobs. I shoot a variety of video with a number of different cameras. I needed a cost effective and easy solution to ND filters and this is it. The swinging gate for quick access to the lens change out is also awesome. This is not a cheep cheesy box so be sure to have a strong rail or cage system to support it. I have a Redrock micro that is similar but cost almost twice as much. Yes. YOU WANT THIS!

Not Perfect but Great for the Price

This matte box works very well. It is not perfect, but for the price it is really great. It is of a much better quality of another box I had found for twice the price. I am very satisfied with it. The only improvements I would recommend are a better connection system to the rods (a bit hard to tighten sufficiently), and the ability to rise it a bit more for use with cameras that need to be mounted a bit higher on the rods. Minor issues, however, and as stated I am working with this very well. We are planning on acquiring one or two more.

Best Deal for the Price

I'm using this matte box on my Blackmagic Cinema Camera rig. I don't have much experience with matte boxes, but, the experience I do have hasn't been great. I worked with a matte box that was worth a couple thousand$$ and it had no swing away arm and was not adjustable up and down. This matte box, however, does both. It's a fantastic rig. It seems plenty durable and seems to be well built. Not to mention, it just makes my set-up look cooler ;) The only issue I have had is that one of the thumb screws' threads are messed up, but, that is bound to happen when buying screws, so, that's no big deal. I am thoroughly satisfied and look forward to many years with this product.

A little shade is nice...

Considering the competition, this is a REALLY affordable unit for it's features. It's not a Chrosziel, so do not expect as much metal and the swing arm is not as quick to manipulate as i'd like, but for banishing lens flares (it's primary job for ME), it's an impressive steal. I'm a little circumspect about the filter holder, but I also don't use filters for my work, so... eh.

Great for the price

Love how tough this is built (minus the plastic filter tray, but for the price I can't complain) A little heavy if you want to go handheld. But at 1/5 of the price of most matte boxes I can't complain.

Low quality, but it does physically work

If you need a usable Mattebox for the cheapest price available , this would be it. It has all the features and is built just like pro Matteboxes but with cheaper materials. It does work but you need to take extra precautions when using filters. The filter trays will fit the standard 4x5.65 filters however the filters need to be taped on the edge because the trays are cheap plastic and flex very easily. Other Matteboxes have metal trays that are stiff and do not flex. It you do not tape in the filter with this Mattebox it will flex and your filter will absolutely fall out. As others have mentioned, you need a battery grip or riser to work efficiently with DSLR's. It's a little wobbly too, so handheld is bit challenging. But in the "cheap Mattebox world" this would be the best choice.

So far so good :)

Just got it and so far so good. I had no troubles centering it on rails. Works very well with my Gini Z1 Rig and Nikon D7000

Doesn't Center over rails, sending back

I just got this in the mail and was really excited to put in on my new rig. The build looked good, the price was incredible, but I was totally bummed when I noticed it doesn't even center over my rails. It's offset to the left about an inch. Why would they build it this way? It doesn't make any sense. My rig doesn't have any lateral slide capability so this it completely useless to me. Sending it back tomorrow :(

Poor Design

Very poor design. Now I know why there are no promo images from the rear, the matte box does not center over the rails. SO, if you don't have a camera mount that can be adjusted laterally, you cannot center the lens in the box. You would think that would be a basic design requirement. I guess not?

Great, but one considerable "flaw"

The Flashpoint matte box is a good entry level choice for those who need to limit those annoying flares when filming outdoors. Though the matte box is height adjustable, I did find one major set back... If you do not shoot with an extended battery grip, your lens will rest at a lower height. The matte box can be adjusted low enough to meet the lens, BUT ONLY if the matte box hangs off of the end of your rails (this is how it is set up in the youtube video showcasing the box). If you try to slide the matte box back, it will hit the rails. This makes it impractical for use with a shorter (ex. 50mm) lens, or with a follow focus. SO, if you do not use an extended battery grip, you would have to buy spacers to raise your camera if you plan on using the box with shorter lenses.

More Than Excellent At Its Price Point

I LOVE this matte box. It's actually a Red Star Matte Box, but Adorama has rebranded it under its Flashpoint label. The quality is excellent and made of anodized aluminium and ABS plastic and fits on any standard 15mm rods. One of the selling points for me was the height adjustment and z-axis (front & back) adjustment that can be made to this matte box. I can use my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera which has a BATTERY GRIP attached. So if you have a Nikon or Canon DSLR camera with a battery grip or a pro level D3x/D4 camera body you'll have no problems. Video cameras such the SONY NEX-FS100/700 and Panasonic AF-100 and similar such cameras can be used, too. The matte box is EXTREMELY PROFESSIONAL and will look great in front of clients. The only minor knock is that the filter trays can only except filters no thicker than 2mm, so keep that in mind. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Stop searching. This is it.

I have been searching for two years for an affordable quality matte box. This matte box could be sold at twice or three times the price (and probably will once people start buying it and word gets out). I got mine today and I was pleasantly surprised with the quality. Moreover I was pleased to receive such a nice product at a non-ridiculous price. BOTTOM LINE: IF YOU HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR MATTE BOXES LIKE I WAS, YOUR SEARCH IS OVER. THIS IS A GREAT MATTE BOX.

Terrific Bargain!

When I was in the market for a matte box, I originally considered the Red Rock Micro, then I saw the Flashpoint version and I thought the [$] price for it was a typo, considering the Red Rock is almost $1000! I have Flashpoint monolights and other light modifying gear and have always found them to be excellent quality, especially for the price. So I took the chance.Money well spent! This thing is probably at least 90% as well made as the Red Rock Micro, for a ridiculously low price (so I can buy other stuff!).Are there build differences? Probably yes, but they are very minor, and would only be an issue if you were filming a Hollywood movie and were abusing your gear as much as you were using it. The Flashpoint uses metal in all the areas where its needed and plastic in areas where its appropriate. Its not at all obvious that it costs a fraction of the price of the Red Rock. The Flashpoint is a terrific bargain, and I would recommend it in a heartbeat.

The Flashpoint DV DSLR Matte Box Pro is the best value in a creative videographer's treasury of tools. Adding a simple matte box to your camera lens strengthens the clarity and contrast that lens flare can destroy. The detrimental effects of light entering even the most expensive lenses are reversed. Not just a 'lens hood on steroids', but a rotating 16:9 filter holder and masking system that suits the specifics of your lens and camera combination. The superior material finish of the machined aluminum and the generous thumb screws, tension knobs or locking hubs, make it perfect for field or studio use without special tools. French flags are firmly secured and twin side wing, adjustable flaps that perfect the protective shade of the matte box, feature locking tracks and catch tabs. As filmmaking is often a moving experience, the lens is subjected to various light paths to keep the action framed properly. The matte box customizable components minimize the challenges of a camera in motion facing harsh environmental or studio lighting. The matte box has 360 degree rotating filter stage and filter trays that support both 4 x 4 and 4 x 5.65 filter sizes. While 'you can do it in post' is a familiar expression, endless hours and expense can be saved by getting better final images while recording. Using filters during your shoot will give you great color and style before the footage gets anyplace near editing.
