DJI Announces New Osmo Pocket Gimbal With 1/2.3-Inch Sensor, 12 MP, and 4K Video
Announced this afternoon at a launch event in Times Square, the new DJI Osmo Pocket is the company’s newest and smallest 3-axis stabilized handheld camera, letting you create cinematic shots on the go.
The gimbal, which includes a 1/2.3-inch sensor, can produce 4K/60fps video at 100Mbps and photos at 12 MP, all with a 140-minute maximum battery life. The compact Osmo Pocket — DJI notes it is a “candy bar-sized device” — was developed through a micro-scale manufacturing process, and is fanless thanks to a passive cooling solution that keeps it from overheating during use.
The small but mighty unit allows for shake-free content capture, and gimbal control accuracy is achievable through the mechanical stabilization platform and brushless motor. The built-in Universal Port also allows for connectivity to your phone, as well as a host of accessories.
Intelligence, built in:
The Osmo Pocket's release also includes five intelligent modes that’ll bring your smartphone content to the next level.
- FPV: Show off action shots from your perspective with the FPV mode that tracks the gimbal’s orientation.
- ActiveTrack: Select the subject of your video (using the touchscreen), and the ActiveTrack mode will follow them for the duration of the video. Switch into Selfie mode and the Osmo Pocket will transition into FaceTrack, keeping you in the frame at all times.
- 3x3 Panorama: Capture the entire scene with detail using the Panorama mode, which can be viewed in the accompanying DJI Mimo app (more on that soon).
- Motionlapse: Take your hours-long content and turn it into a speedy Timelapse, and the addition of Motionlapse lets you capture stable camera movement.
- NightShot: Low-light scenes are no challenge for the Osmo Pocket’s NightShot mode, which lets you shoot in darker environments with no need for a tripod.
DJI Mimo app:
Along with the Osmo Pocket, DJI has just announced the release of the Mimo app, designed to give you professional editing tools right at your fingertips. The app includes filters and soundtracks that add a cinematic touch to your creations, and the My Story function includes templates, filters, music options, and even watermarks you can add directly into your creations.
The app’s Pro mode also includes the option to capture RAW photos and even D-Cinelike videos, DJI notes, and allows for manual settings adjustments.
What else you need to know:
To work with the Osmo Pocket, DJI also announced a selection of new accessories to pair directly with the handheld camera.
The DJI Osmo Pocket comes equipped with a charging case that stores and charges the gimbal with a single full charge and can hold additional accessories. The unit is also Bluetooth- and Wi-Fi-equipped, allowing you to instantly sync with your phone.
An additional retractable extension rod includes a ¼-inch tripod mount, as well as two function buttons and a controller wheel built onto the handle. A waterproof case allows for use at depths up to 60m, and a 3.5mm adapter is built-in to enable connection with an external microphone.
The DJI Osmo Pocket is available for preorder starting today.
