It is that time of the year again — the holiday season is here! If you have a big Sony photography fan on your gift list (or if you are a Sony photographer), this is the guide for you. The holidays are a great time to bring people together and celebrate everything that we’re thankful for. Whether it's a new camera, a sharp lens, or a must-have accessory, this guide will help you find that ideal tool that will allow your giftee to share their creativity.
Sony Alpha 1 Mirrorless Digital Camera
This is the one camera to do it all. Do you want to shoot landscapes? How about portraits? Maybe you’re into sports? There is nothing that this camera cannot handle. Sporting a 50.1-megapixel full-frame stacked Exmor RS image sensor, this machine is capable of up to 30fps continuous shooting with up to 120 AF/AE calculations per second4, 8k 30p 10-bit 4:2:0 video, and much more. To see it in action, check out my hands-on review of the Sony A1 camera.
Sony Alpha a7 III 24MP UHD 4K Mirrorless Digital Camera
Are you or someone you know looking to get into full frame imaging for the first time? Well, look no further. The Sony Alpha a7 III is the camera. The 24 megapixels are ideal for many types of photography. One of my favorite aspects of this camera is its incredible eye autofocus capabilities. Eye AF dramatically enhances portrait shooting, and the quick AF speed makes it easier to shoot a portrait of a moving subject, even if the subject looks down and away from the camera or is backlit with face in partial darkness. For more info, see Sony Artisan Taylor Rees’ hands-on review of the a7 III.
Sony Alpha a7R IV Mirrorless Digital Camera
If ultimate joy is defined as an epic landscape scene, then the only way to go is the Sony a7R IV camera. It has an insane 61-megapixel sensor with dynamic range for days and days. It is also robustly constructed with strong weather sealing. Pair this up with one of the G Master lenses and you have a high-resolution landscape powerhouse! Landscapes are often shot during very low-light conditions and with small apertures. Advanced AF algorithms on the a7R IV contribute to AF precision at light levels as low as EV-3. The “Focus Priority in Aperture Drive” option is for more accurate focusing in dim lighting and when the aperture is stopped down. Check out how I used the Sony a7R IV on a recent trip to Iceland.
The Sony A6000 and these two lenses provide a fantastic, lightweight, and portable kit for any occasion. When you are gathered around for a family event, this system allows you to be free and mobile while still capturing superb images of joyous occasions. You'll enjoy the increased light collecting efficiency of a gapless on-chip lens structure, extremely low noise throughout a wide sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 25600, and superb corner-to-corner image quality.
Sony ZV-E10 Mirrorless Camera
Think of the ZV-E10 camera as the ZV-1 compact camera and more. With a much larger APS sensor and the ability to change lenses, you will be equipped with a much more versatile vlogging system. The ZV-E10 also includes the acclaimed vlogging-specific features favored in the popular ZV-1 digital camera, including “Background Defocus”, “Product Showcase Setting” and “Face Priority AE”.
The a6600 is Sony's flagship APS-C camera with all the bells and whistles. My favorite feature is the inbuilt 5-axis image stabilization that now stabilizes every lens you put on it. Color rendition is spot on and quick autofocus speeds will ensure that you capture every joyous moment as it happens.
The C in Sony's A7C camera stands for “compact”. However, it could just as easily stand for “charismatic” because this is a gorgeous, tiny full-frame mirrorless camera that is smaller than most APS-C cameras. However, it has the excellent image quality of a full frame sensor and the video capabilities of a much more expensive system. If you are into doing full-frame vlogging, be sure to pick this little gem up and pair it with the Sony 24mm G lens. Check out Sony Alpha Collective member Sal D’Alia’s first look review of the Sony Alpha 7C.
The Sony Xperia team has taken a few chapters from the Alpha mirrorless book and delivered this amazing camera phone. It has four very sharp lenses which reach up to 105mm, and the autofocus system of an Alpha mirrorless camera — just see photographer Crissibeth Cooper’s hands-on review to see it in action. In addition, its ability to capture 4K content is nothing short of miraculous! Pair all that with a 120 Hz 4K HDR OLED display and you have a powerhouse of a smartphone.
This is not your traditional drone. This is a precise piece of hardware that you can utilize to capture amazing footage from perspectives never achievable before. In addition, the fact you can now carry a full-frame system means all aspects of your video will have that buttery smooth cinematic look. The Airpeak S1 can also withstand wind speeds as high as 20m/s, and can maintain stable flight in erratic upper-level winds and strong low-level canyon and coastal winds.
Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM Master Lens
This is my go-to ultra-wide astrophotography lens. If I know I'll be shooting the night sky, this lens will absolutely accompany me. Pair it with the excellent A7R IV camera and you will capture glorious images and video of the night sky. In addition, for such a wide aperture lens, it is amazingly lightweight. Finally, it is built with excellent weather sealing and corner to corner sharpness.
Sony FE 24mm f/2.8 G Lens
This is my favorite lens to put on the Alpha 7C body, especially for vlogging. I love the compact and lightweight but robust design, the AF/MF switch, and the ability to make the aperture ring clickless. The optics are also first rate with excellent corner-to-corner sharpness.
Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM Lens
If the 35mm is more your style, this is the lens for you! It is Sony’s flagship 35mm lens. The optics on this beauty are second to none. If you want that single, go anywhere, shoot anything, compact, high-quality lens, then look no further. It’s perfect for vacations because it's just wide enough for landscape and intimate enough for environmental portraits.
Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 G Master Lens
Do you love portrait photography? This is the ultimate 50mm lens for the Sony system. It has the robust build quality of a G Master lens, the buttery smooth bokeh of an f/1.2 aperture, and the perfect field of view of a 50mm lens. Whether you're shooting in low light situations, in the studio with controlled lighting, or doing candid street photography, this is a great lens to have in your bag. Pair this with Sony’s incredible autofocus system and you’ll get pinpoint focus accuracy with smooth bokeh every time at f/1.2.
Carry that new Sony camera in style. If you are looking for a replacement for the stock strap, Perri’s garment leather strap is a beautiful recommendation. Its simple yet elegant design is super comfortable and practical. It's almost like they were thinking of the Sony Alpha system when they made this strap.
Sennheiser XSWD Wireless Digital Portable Lavalier Set
When it comes to video, the audio quality is critical alongside picture quality. If you need great audio that is wireless, reliable, and portable, this lavalier set is my recommendation. When I do interviews of multiple people where several inputs need to go into a single receiver, this offers the best and most elegant solution. On a practical note, the battery life is amazing at five hours, and it is easy to clip on and off from a shirt or jacket.
Flashpoint XPLOR 300 Pro TTL R2 Battery-Powered Monolight
When going out to do outdoor portraits, I need a simple, reliable flash system that won't bog me down. This Flashpoint unit is perfect for that type of work. I take a single light source with the 24-inch Hexapop modifier, and this combination is ideal for on-location model photography. In addition, if I'm teaching a workshop and my students have their own cameras, this flash system is able to autosense all camera types. Practically, it has a USB-C port, a bicolored modeling light, and high-speed sync up to 1/8000 sec.
Lowepro Flipside BP 400 AW III Camera & Laptop Backpack
I have a ton of backpacks for my camera system. However, I seem to always reach for the Lowepro Flipside BP 400 when going out for a day of shooting. I love its easy-to-use 10mm YKK zipper system, it's abrasion-resistant rugged design, and waterproof coating. My favorite feature, however, is the ability to access my gear quickly using the side opening.
Manfrotto Befree Advanced Aluminum Travel Tripod with Ball Head
A good tripod can make or break a long exposure shot. But a tripod doesn't have to be super heavy or cumbersome. I really like traveling with this Manfrotto Befree tripod. It has an excellent 17.6 LB load capacity and the central ballhead has three independent ergonomic controls. I also like its side pull selector for quick setup.
Sony TOUGH 160GB CFexpress Type A Memory Card
If you need ultimate high-speed performance out of a memory card, Sony’s CFexpress Type A Memory card will not let you down. It allows you to capture high speed continuous shots of more than 1000 uncompressed RAW still images in addition to 4K 120P movies at high bitrates with slow and quick motion function. Also, because this is Sony’s TOUGH model, it is super resistant to bending and impact forces, giving you peace of mind even in the harshest of environments.
Joby GorillaPod 1K Flexible Mini-Tripod with Ball Head Kit
I don't always have the inclination or ability to carry around a large tripod. However, I still want to achieve excellent sharpness in my images without motion artifacts. That's why I carry the Joby GorillaPod in my bag. It is strong and holds equipment weighing up to 2.2 pounds. The rubberized grip rings and foot allow for unparalleled stability, no matter the surface.
