Shopper : How deep does it sense things?JOEL C : think that would depend on the size of the objest,it will pick up something the size of a bb, 8-10 inches deep,without any problemLUKE H : 8"+ACCOUNTS P : I bought this detector for a department at the college and didn't work with it. However, I sold detectors at one time and used them over a period of years, so I might be able to answer your question for detectors in general. The depth they can detect metallic objects depend on several variables that include: A. The size or mass of the object, its orientation in the soil and the composition of metals B. Type of soil (sand, loam, clay, etc) C. Amount of 'mineralization' (percentage of iron oxides) D. Amount of soil moisture E. Length of time object has been buried (gold possibly excepted) F. Power of the detector G. Size of the search loop (larger loop for larger targets) H. Operator skill (Not necessarily in order of significance) I'm sure there are other folks that can add to this list but this might cover the main factors. Considering these factors, I would make a guess as to a the range of this and similar detectors. On a penny, perhaps from 3" to 10" On a silver dollar perhaps from 6" to 14" With a large search loop it might detect an aluminum pie place (lying flat) maybe 2' - 4'. If you are searching for coins, rings and other like valuables, your success will be largely bases on how many others have already searched the site and the amount of other metallic trash in the area. Most detectors can do a good job of rejecting a piece of trash and accepting a coin, but a bunch of trash can 'hide' a coin nearby. There are many advanced detector users out there that may take exception to my post, and that's OK - they most likely are more current than I. I have used Garrett detectors for many hours and actually had the pleasure of meeting Charles Garrett years ago but a lot of folks have had different experiences with detectors and probably have comments worthy of your attention. Target ID is very useful and accurate!

I have used this model since it was introduced primarily in searching crime scenes for projectiles and casings. I particularly have found the Target ID legend for projectile casings to be very accurate. I also am the CSI photographed in the manual. Thanks Garrett for a fine product. @J_S_Rogers

As a team of volunteers who assist a law enforcement agency in searching for evidence, we have come to rely on the CSI 250's. We have 5 of them and with their ability to sense the type of metal and bury depths, they are invaluable in locating buried weapons and shell casings. Their variable sensitivity helps in understanding the potential size of objects.. To date we have had no problems with them and highly recommend them.

Great product

As a first time enthusiast, my plan was to use this only at the beach, while on vacation. After using it ( easy to operate and get the hang of it)... I can think of numerous other applications for use at home. Pros: *Great price *Came with batteries. *Easy to operate. *Came with awesome set of headphones... Better quality than was expected. *Delivery fast ( 3 work days from New York to Florida). Cons: *Heavier than I expected....it said 2.7 lbs....... Don't think so! *Bag that came with it was only a very light weight small gym bag...I thought "carry bag" meant the long one that you cover and carry your unit in.
