They help, but....
They're limited in how well they work -- but would buy them again for use with the flashes built into my two a6500s....recommended.

Affordable and effective diffuser for on-board flash
For the Sony Alpha APS-C that flash is notably harsh when used directly on a subject. This diffuser effectively modifies light output direction, and diffuses the light nicely. I was surprised to find the yellow diffuser (comes with yellow and white) is my preferred one for most situations. For the price, this is a decent solution. Only problem I find is shooting up close produces a harsh shadow where the diffuser itself casts the shadow. To work around it, you can try using your finger to GENTLY move the flash slightly behind the diffuser. Shooting from a distance beyond 3 or 4 feet it's not a problem.

Fong diffuser for A6000
This panel is an inexpensive way to soften the built in flash of the Sony A6000.
Well worth the money.
