Gerber Prodigy Serrated Edge Knife, Fixed Black Blade

I own and carry the Gerber Prodigy. Razor sharp out of the box and great fit and control. Love the steel and love the serrations. I had to cut several arm-loads of tall, dry winter grass to make bedding material in the winter recently and the serrations were perfect for that task. It took me about 10 minutes to cut, carry and spread about five large arm-loads of the grass, and the serrations were just perfect for that task. Zero dulling, too. When I go into the bush for some survival fun, this Gerber always goes with me. When I am not using it on my belt, I keep it mounted to my DRACO AR-15 bag so I will have it with me in case I have to un-ass the area quickly, if you catch my drift.

Bought the plain-edge, non-serrated version of this knife three years ago on a fluke impulse buy. I saw it on display in store (Wal-Mart, if you can believe it) and, after holding it, instantly made the decision. Hadn't even seen the sheath yet, so when I did, that was a huge bonus. It is now an essential ingredient to my EDC gear. I don't go anywhere without it. Ever. It's either strapped to my pack or to my leg. Great work knife, and I imagine a great defense knife (though I hope I never find out). I would buy another plain-edge version just 'cause, but I don't think I'll ever need to.

I have carried this knife every hunting season from 2017 to 2020 and I can't tell you how many bucks, hogs, elk, and crocks this knife has saved me from It has been on my belt every day during my construction job and it has been in my truck every day since I bought the thing it is more reliable than any other knife I have ever owned and that is the darn truth if your gonna buy a knife buy the prodigy

I opted for the fine edge for 3 reasons, 1. fine edge. 2. much better sheath. 3. tachide grip. I didn't buy this knife for survival use, I have other knives for that. Living in a state that has open carry, I carry this as back up. Perfect size, tachide grip provides security in the hand. Great blade came sharp, even sharper now. I wish more Gerber knives came with the tachide grip, why just the Freeman Guide, LHR, and the Prodigy?

This is another great addition to my gear. This one is attached to my truck bag. It mounts perfectly with the molle system and has put up with some serious abuse. I rate it just under my strong Arm and LMF ii. Although similar it is priced right for my truck knife

Besides the LMF, this is my favorite Gerber knife ever. I've had the original black serrated, the coyote, and recently the plain edge. I've since gotten the strongarm and although i like the versatility of the sheath, it just doesnt feel as good in the hands as the prodigy does. I recently joined the guard and are transitioning from the digital camo to the OCP so if possible, i would like to see the tanto version in coyote with ocp/multicam pattern to match our uniforms.

Love this knife, amazingly useful, both for Bushcraft and combat situations. As a combat soldier I find many uses for the serrated edge, which are super useful. Cutting thick ropes for example, will be much simpler with a serrated edge. Everything has a use, just not everyone has that need...

Love this knife. My favorite serrated edge design. It's a great, mid size knife that isn't too big/concerning to carry in public in many applications. Very practical in it's design, FANTASTIC sheath compared to its competitors. Although I wish the bottom strap could be permanently fastened away from the factory, as it does tend to get jammed when trying to put the knife back in and or take it out. I would like to see this come in different colors, the sheath body being made into green, blue, and red, with accompanying knife colors. This would make it less threatening in public. The black tactical look does have it's disadvantages. Thanks for making this knife, keep up the good work.

I bought the fine edge of this knife and it is an really good choice for an outdoor activities. It not too long not too short 5 mm blade thickness . You can easily carve or split wood cut bait for fishing etc. The blade is sharpen on a wider angle so keep this in mind if you sharpen the blade. The handle feels great in the hand and absorb the shock during splitting wood. Good product

I bought this knife last year and have since retired every knife I own for this blade. I hear lots of people talk bad about serrations, well after using this knife for 6 months straight daily I am a firm believer in them now. I think people don't take the time to learn how to use them properly or have only used non Gerber brand serrations. Not all serrations are created equal, mine haven't ever been sharpened, after a year of hard use they are sharp as day one. I truly believe in this knife and would trust it in a survival situation, esp because the knife makes fire work easy. You can make nice long feathers that are either hair thin or thick as you like all by just changing the angel or pressure on the blades serrated edge. If you are someone who struggles with forearm fatigue while cutting sticks and feathering, this knife will be perfect for you. I plan on doing a feathersticking review video on YouTube here soon, I can not recommend this knife more, its the best knife I've ever used. Oh also the 420hc is amazing, Gerber must have some crazy wizard cooking their steel cause in 5 months of daily use I have only had to strop this knife....It don't get much better than that, AWESOME KNIFE GERBER, WELL DONE.5 stars.

I have owned this knife for 4 years. It has been on every camping trip and hiking excursion since. Serrations cut through rope like butter. Holds an edge well and sharpens easily. The point is very strong, I pry with it more than I should and it doesn't complain or give in. Very corrosion resistant, which is good cause I always find water :) Most comfortable knife I have ever held. My favorite piece of gear and I don't go into the woods without it. Gets used for everything from a flint striker, eating utensil, can opener, pry bar, as well as other more orthodox knife uses. I try my hand at making knives so I probably wont be buying too many more knives in the future, but if I ever loose this one I am buying a new one asap. By the way, for all of you who bought this knife and don't like it, I will gladly pay the shipping cost for you to send it to me, that way I can keep one in my flight bag, car, and back pack and have several spares in case someone raids my checked baggage on my frequent international travels. This is the ultimate fixed blade knife. Sharp, nice weight, and a good sheath to tote it in . This is a must have when out in the woods and camping . Excellent tool ! Thanks Gerber, and keep making such high quality knives . The non-slip handle is exactly what you need when your hands are wet and/or muddy . i really like this knife.

This is my go to knife for anytime I'm going into the woods. Not sure why all the hate on the serrated blade. I have cut every material imaginable with this knife and have never cursed it. And have no problem field sharpening it with the right tool.

I have collected Tactical knives every since I was a boy. I have many good quality brand name knives. The Prodigy is by far one of the best knives I've ever owned. The hefty but not too weighty blade is perfect. The handle is strong and sure. The knife gives you the very real impression that this blade was made to perform!

Worth every single penny. No matter what i have thrown at my prodigy it's done the job beyond expectations. As long as you take care of the edge, it will last for years. It's also beautiful to hold and look at haha. The only thing i'd change, is put a little flap in the sheath to tuck the punch into, it's scratched me a few times, but nothing too bad. All and all, the best knife i have ever owned.

Just got this knife today. I really like the heft and thickness of the blade. The handle is excellent with exceptional grip and the skullcrusher pommel is a nice touch. The sheath is very handy because of the range of options for carry and is quite robust. My only complaint is the blade serration. I would MUCH prefer a non serrated blade but all in all this knife is an exceptional value for the money i spent. Thanks Gerber Kalle

Fixed blade knives at least for are only usable in certain situations as compared to a good folder that you can use every day. This Gerber Prodigy is by far the very very best fixed blade I have ever used. I thought no one could beat the Seal Pup but this Prodigy blows it away. Ultra tough knife takes a beating and comes back for more, very secure sheath with leg strap rides low like I prefer and the handle is comfortable for extended usage...Really love this knife but was a little bummed out that Gerber only makes a part serrated version....Are you listening fine folks at Fiskars/Gerber? Blade finish wears a bit with use, but not a big deal...Great knife, and it's made in the United States. Worth every penny I paid for it too....

I received the Prodigy as a Christmas gift and have been using it a lot for all sorts of outdoor activities. The shape of the handle is very ergonomic and the blade shape is ideal for many applications. However, I'm a bit disappointed that the knife isn't offered without serrations. They're not suitable for making fuzz sticks or other "fine edge" usages. Gutting a deer or other harvested animals and fish is much easier without serrations. Please seriously consider making the option of a fine edge for this knife. All I can honestly give is 3 stars.
