I got one of these at the 2009 SHOT Show and have carried and used it for 15 years now. I don't know what type of steel they use, but it's TOUGH. I've done things with this tool that really surprised me. It's a fantastic everyday carry tool.

Ditto to the earlier reviewer on the 1/4" hex hole instead of the round lanyard hole. Otherwise, it's a great little tool to keep on your key chain.

Literally found mine hiking a section of the AT locally. Put it on my key chain, it's been there ever since and has come in handy numerous times. Lucky day.

I wish that instead of the lanyard hole, this tool had a 1/4 hex bit hole. Also, anything to improve the philips head driver would be great as this is my most used function.

I use this tool several times a day sometimes. I also functions as an excellent packing tape cutter. I've used it to open bee hives. Handy for removing small e-clips. Can dip under pop top tabs. Anytime I want to save my finger tips from damage but don't want to fetch another tool.

Got a shard as a Christmas gift a couple years back and recently lost it - was devastated and came here immediately to purchase another. Love this thing, fantastically handy at work and gives my keychain a nice flare.

Just bought this for myself. Saw some great reviews for it so wanted to see how it would work for me. I work in a professional kitchen and stuff is always breaking or needs touching up and minor or quick repairs. Used it two days after putting it on my keychain to repair the handle in one of our convection ovens. Did a great and efficient job. Living ot so far.

My Shard and I have been through airports in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia over the past several years and it has passed through security as a carry-on item without attracting attention so far. The same is not true of other multi-tools, as even those that are technically "TSA-approved" are subject to the whims of individual security agents. Beyond that, several countries in Asia and Africa have rules prohibiting tools of any kind as carry-on items, even if they do not include a blade. This has cost me several Leatherman Style PS tools, and the Gerber Dime would also be subject to confiscation under identical circumstances.

Wife purchased a bundle pack of Gerber products from Field & Stream over a year ago, this is the main item I have used on a weekly basis. From boxes to screws to opening bottles while tailgating, this little guy is a fantastic edc item.

I use this all the time. Great for opening boxes, fixing a screw or opening a bottle. Don't dull your knife, use your Shard! Use your knife for the right job. Thanks Gerber, keep up the great work!

I love my Shard. Always with me and always ready to deal with my everyday needs. I use the cross driver end to slice open tape on boxes roughly bi-weekly to weekly, the screwdriver, wire stripper, bottle opener and even the pry bar have been used when I did not have anything else at hand. This is one of the most useful tools I have ever purchased. Way to go Gerber! Now can you create a wearable tool (bracelet, ring or watch band) like the Shard that does more?

This little guy gets used so often and whenever I use it to open soda can since I don't have finger nails or bottles it's a great conversation peice. Used it a few times in the classroom for the flathead screw driver and the Phillips head is great if you need to puncture a case of bottled water. Do not worry about holes in your pocket. This cannot do that unless your pants are made of aluminum foil. I wear khakis every day and no issues. Great product, never get ride of it!

shard is a nice little tool when you don't have anything else around, but certainly not something I'd carry on my keychain. not sure if you guys all are mall security or what but my keychain has one key on it, and my car fob. this thing is bigger than both! I do, however, keep it in a desk drawer where it's always handy.

Every set of keys should have one. I agree with others, lanyard hole is a feature, not a function. Based on my use, they could add box-cutter to the function list and still have 7 functions. It's not going to replace a real box-cutter any more than it would replace a set of screwdrivers, but it opens boxes better than a house key does and is still airline safe. The bottle opener works great, usually opens on the first try. Pry bar opens paint cans, removes staples, and handles other minor tasks. The screw driver opens battery doors in similar. It's great to have a useful tool on my keyring since I can't carry a multi-tool with a knife at work or on flights.

The Gerber Shard has come in handy on more than one occasion. Its one of those tools that you're glad you have when you need it. Despite its compact size, the Shard is robust enough not to bend, twist, or get int the way of anything else on your keychain. The tools I've found myself using the most included: the screw driver, pry bar/ flat head, and the bottle opener. Its proven it worth as an "every day carry item."

I think its a great tool. Be careful, ill lend it to someone to use it and realize only later my car keys are gone.

Love this little tool. Rides on my key chain like a champ. Cool little Gerber.

But it would be nice to include the features list in the packaging, the way Gerber does with other tools. It's so slickly designed that someone could easily not notice something they need.

I got one of these from a Heart Health event in downtown Portland, OR. The one that I bought doesn't have the Nitride coating, but it's still in PERFECT condition. I absolutely love it. I carry it with my everywhere I go on a carabiner. I've used this for so many different things, and everything on it works. I've used the two flathead drivers several times. I've used the pry bar to remove large staples and some nails from wood. I'd stripped wire, both single strand and multi-strand. I use the lanyard hole to attach it to my dual carabiner (it's in the shape of a yin-yang). I truly love this product and don't know what I would do without it. Since, I've purchased 4 more for my friends and family. The only thing I haven't really used is the cross(phillips) driver, but there hasn't been any need for it yet. I wish you sold the un-coated version online... Can we submit customer pictures?

The Gerber Shard Keychain Tool is just a small flake of metal with lots of functionality. This small tool fits in your pocket or on a keychain. It weighs less than one ounce and has Philips and flathead screwdrivers, a pry bar, a nail remover, bottle opener, can opener and scraper, to name just a few of its uses. The Gerber Shard is a tool you can bring on the plane without worry that it will be taken from you.
