Sounds like Gerber has a quality problem. I've had mine 10 years or so. Have beat it very hard through the years. Using for things it probably hasn't been intended for. Still going strong. My buddy has (had) one, threaded lock stripped out with minimal use. Maybe some were built in 3rd world country?!?

Picked up a Gorge for my get home bag. It's more spade than needed really. Decent for light digging and it's light. Tossed the box and decided to look at it again and found the bag inside, very bottom, with some documentation that guys never read.

I just got this unit for Christmas 2015 and I also didn't get a nice carrying bag. Bummer would like one that attached to mole gear. otherwise strong and sturdy.

I bought the shovel basically to see if it could maybe be good in a pinch camping or hiking . So i start to use it and the thing cuts through the dirt like butter And my dirt on my property is like dry clay. And it fits in my hiking bag with out taking any space up. I highly recommend this shovel to any one who gos hiking or back packing or for a emergency situation . This shovel has a bunch of uses it even has a hammer on it. They are built great

The Gerber Gorge folding spade is the perfect inexpensive camping shovel. At only 1.3 pounds this tool is definitely pulling its weight. The push button slide mechanism allows this shovel to be telescoped from a compact 9.25 inches to 15.75 inches of handy leveraging power. The handle can be used for hammering tent stakes.
