Great knife I know they had some issues with the first models but Ferber has amazing service and they stand behind their stuff and they would replace even the undamaged flawed models with the improved version. Can't break tbis thing holds up really well.

I have been using this knife for my main hikinh, backpacking, bushcraft knife. This knife survives!! I agree that when it went dull, it was difficult to make it razor sharp at first. However, later i bought a work sharp field guided sharpener. Now it is razor sharp again. My blade's tip chipped as well, which i find inevitable using it for 6 years throwing, cutting, batoning overall hard use. I do not understand why people complain and get disappointed just by the name and the "chinese" steel that they have not yet used. Great knife, really. My main problem is that i cannot find the spare parts (ferro rod).

The knife holds up very well but, all the extra attachments are very poor quality and fall apart quickly.

I have mine for more than 5 years, it is a terrific knife, friends with K-Bar, or Spanish Chaman, doesn't make any better than I do with this in the outdoor. The only quality break down was the land to air rescue info pocket that rips out, but that I already find useless anyway.

knife was ok till the blade went dull and will not hold it's edge. probably isn't a good sign when the knife comes with a sharpener on the sheath. also the tip bent and has nearly broken off after I dropped it in the dirt...

So In the terms of survival knifes, native Americans used far less to survive. So if this can't help you out. Then you probably shouldn't venture into the woods. Personally I've always had good luck with Gerber blades I've used them for 20 + years hunting and backpacking!

After the redesign of this knife it's one of my favorite Gerber knifes I use it all the time the nylon part of the sheath could be better

I won't whine about the name or anything else about it, this knife is well made and I have no complaints about it. If people don't like the name or whatever they shouldn't buy it and being such an expert, open their own company and make one with their name on it. I own several blades and other items with the name Gerber on them. Good enough for me.

I'm an outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman, it's what I am. I "camp" now days in an 18 foot travel trailer. I am too old to sleep in a tent anymore. I bought this knife because I wanted it, just that simple. What attracted me is the diamond sharpener in the sheath. Now, it's not as good as my oil stone, can't get quite the edge on it. BUT, when I'm in the field using it, I have a sharpener with me, can't forget it at home. I kill a lot of pigs. Skinning a pig is tough on an edge. This one is a tough knife and does as well as any knife I've used, better than some most, actually, as far as keeping an edge. And, when it dulls, I have that sharpener in the sheath to whip an edge back on it. I'll usually have to do that a couple of time on a small pig, a few times more on a big one. Deer aren't nearly as demanding on a hunting knife as pigs. The knife is a little large for cleaning/skinning. I prefer a 3-4" blade and have a good Gerber skinner drop point I bought for skinning, but when I'm out in the woods and shoot a hog, having that sharpener along is REAL handy. Besides, this knife holds an edge better than that other Gerber or most of my other knives. Heck, my dad gave me a Case Kodiak skinner in 1975, what is now a nearly 200 dollar knife. It's real flashy, neat to look at, but a few cuts on a hog and that shaving sharp blade dulls. I think THAT knife has just too delicate an edge. It will get so sharp you can shave your face with it, but it just won't hold an edge. I don't have that problem with the BG knife. Yeah, I'd appreciate the knife without the Bear Grylles endorsement, kinda cheesy, but it's such a good knife, I'll overlook that. The blade gets arm shaving sharp and keeps that edge better than most. It's a good knife for a hog hunter.

A great knife. I love the sheath I love the way there's a sharpener in the sheath. The Firestarter is small but worked great for me. i Just came on this site to buy more firestarters for it. I made lots of fires camping with it. Great grip and took the beating i gave it on 2 camping trips. Im going to buy a few more firstarters for it now. Great knife again

The pictured knife is excellent. It's a beautiful functional knife. Five stars. The previous version was flawed and replaced. You can tell which one you have by the thickness of the orange section near the pommel. In the flawed version, the section was thin, about half the thickness of the one pictured above.

I've used this knife extensively and I'm overall pleased with how it performs. I had to replace it once because I broke the blade trying to split some medium-sized logs. Gerber sent me a new one, no questions asked. The knife is lighter than a Ka-bar with more tools included in the overall package that I think makes this a keeper.

Amazing knife and sheath but the fire steal grip hurts after gripping it for awhile so I hope that they will make a more comfortable one soon

I bought this knife a few years back and never got any use out of it. It final came in use when hurricane Matthew hit NC. I was unprepared, but with this knife I was able to split enough fire wood to cook and boil water while I was without power for 6 days.

I've owned the UN for four years now, and was disappointed with the first one I owned because the bad was made out of a bad batch of steel. It was replaced, free of charge, and I had a brand new one of another batch. I have very much enjoyed this knife! I live in Alaska and there are opportunities to use this knife with each day. Camping trips, just a hike, or fiddling around all have opportunities for this knife to perform. It has great options, multi features are grand and that's why I carry it in my flight bag incase of I ever go down in this territory. I do feel the knife and this line of products are a bit inflated with the name of Bear, but I know they mean well, and Bear is great. Thanks Gerber.

haven't used it yet but from a superficial standpoint it looks very nice. Ive seen alot of bad reviews but Im assuming most people who made those reviews probably did not treat the knife with as much respect as you should treat a knife. It is not the most desirable option to use a knife as a spear point, most knives this one included are designed for being used as a cutting tool. However the metal block on the butt end of the knife is designed for hammering, I really doubt that the designers were expecting you to expose it to pressures greater than can be given by hand, obviously it has a hammer, but that is just an extra tool (a Swiss army knife is still called a knife) obviously if you are going to use it for something that requires hard continously force you should not expose your knife to this abuse. in the wild a knife is a valuable tool, but tools have certain functions that they are intended for, in other words, don't try to use your nose to hear it will only fail you.

Good knife, I've seen bad reviews but every Gerber I've had has been a keeper. This knife has done it all from just shaving sticks to batoning and cleaning wild game. Gets and keeps a decent edge. Love the fire starter it works great.

I have specialty knives for everything - skinning, caping, machete, folding, filet, etc... My brother in law got me this knife for Christmas 2 years ago and it was a huge eye opener. I now keep my skinning and caping knives in the backpack till after the kill - but this knife is always on my belt. I have used it from hammering down tent stakes to field dressing deer and it has worked flawlessly. Besides the blade, the best part about this knife is the non-slip rubberized grip, especially when covered in blood. They can keep the Bear Grylls endorsement - this knife is a standalone winner.

Two years ago I bought the Bear Gyllis Ultimate Survival Knife. It is a great tool for any outdoor activity, but the ferro stick tends to drop out if you have it used it frequently. The design engineers at Gerber now offer a better knife, their Gyllis Pro Ultimate Survival knife. Check out the specs and compare the two knives....like me, you will buy the Pro even though it is twice the cost. For the money, Gerber makes the absolute best survival knives--better than Bench made and Becker which are very expensive knives.

I am a scout and i say this knife comes in handy in all scouting situation, be it pioneering or backwoodsman. If only gerber could design a jack knife just like this, that will be excellent

this knife has been perfect for everything i've ever asked of it. I've used it to start fires, filet fish, for self defense, and even to split wood. There's nothing this knife can not do.

Great knife for many purposes. Great feel and balance. Very comfortable and strongly built. Only complaint is the holding mechanism for the fire starter. Lost mine from scabbard on hunting trip and now having difficulty in finding a replacement to fit.
